WHY Paradise?

BRITISH PRIME MINISTERFOLLOWS JÁVEA LEAD

More than a year after volunteers withCancer Care Jávea decided to purchase a‘cancer DNA mapping - or sequencing -machine’ for Denia Hospital, Britain’sPrime Minister, David Cameron, announced a £100m project for the UK.

Whilst everyone waits for a machine that will analyse bloodand detect cancers in the body, the machine funded by Jáveacancer Care, will monitor patients where cancer has alreadybeen diagnosed, to ensure that a ‘cocktail’ of chemo ingredientsis ‘matched’ to their needs, and the specific type of cancer thatis destroying their quality of life.

Our repeated requests to the charityvolunteers managing the project for astatement clarifying the whereabouts of

Forty-year Tosalethouseowner, DavidMcMullan Mbe recentlypresented our publisher,Clive Read, with a copyof David’s book tracingthe history of the‘Crayford’ motor carconversions across therange of cars from Minito Mercedes, but neverfar away from Fords.

JÁVEA IS THREE VILLAGES

THE PUEBLOor Old Town

With the Gothic ParishChurch of St. Bartolome atits centre, the narrow streetsremind us they weredesigned with horse and cartin mind.

Wooden front doors openon the street, behind whichis a labrinth of rooms and aninner courtyard wherelivestock were housed.

Many properties havebeen converted into shopsand intimate cafés, eachwith its own tapas to matchthe atmosphere.

It might look boring but the‘Old Town’ is always fresh, and delivers on promise.

THE PORTor Aduanas

A reminder to everyone thatJávea was - and still is - animportant fishing port, proven by the number ofrefrigerated vehicles thatmake their way there fromplaces as far away asMalaga.

Fuel tax and EU quotasare strangling those whofish, in the same way as fewnow harvest oranges andother crops that are left torot.

You’ll discover somethingnew with every visit to thePort - and the ‘Fisherman’sChurch’ always impresses.

THE ARENALor Beach

Despite the danger ofmelanoma of the skin, tourists still pour onto thebeach to gain a sun tan thatwill show their UK friendsthey’ve had a great holiday.

The ‘Sandy’ beach offerssafe bathing - not forgettingall bathing by the young orelderly should besupervised - combiningsand that is cleanedovernight, with anabundance of nearby barsand restaurants to suit everypalate and pocket.

There are rope andrubber climbing frames anda special area for disabledbathers at the Southern endof the bay.

Agenda 21For 7 years, residents of Jáveahave met with Councillors,Town Hall employees (andeach other) to discuss therelationship betweenConstruction, Tourism andenvironment.

It was always going to bea difficult road, with jobs forJavienses (those born inJávea) always being moreimportant than ‘green’ issues.

You can follow Agenda21 news at:http://tinyurl.com/5tn2uggAgentsAgents are intermediaries, motivated to make enoughmoney to keep them inbusiness - like anyone else.

Drinking and drivingDON’T - it’s not worth it!Driving/Driving LicencesThere are excellent books inenglish like "Motoring in Spain"by Brian J Deller, that areupdated as needed.

In general - be aware thatsome Spanish drivers do notindicate (particularly goingleft) around roundabouts andwill stay in the outside laneall the way around. Use yourwing mirrors. They do notalways indicate when turningoff a road either, do not stopfor pedestrian crossings noracknowledge any courtesyyou give them. They will alsobe inches from your rearbumper when on fast roadsand will overtake to fill thegap you leave from the car infront, as taught in the UK.

This is particularlyannoying in the Calpe tunnel, where you MUST leave a100m gap between yourselfand the car in front, when anovertaking car can move intoyour gap, leaving you with a‘photo fine’ for travelling tooclose.

FraudJávea has far less crime than 5years ago, but wherever thereare people with money, therewill be opportunist crooks.Always be on your guard andfear the worst.FreemasonryIan Hutchinson is creditedwith introducing englishFreemasonry to Jávea andSpain, creating a ‘Temple’above the Cave Inn, thatbecame Cheers Bar.

A new ‘Temple’ has beenestablished in Costa Nova, which had an ‘Open Day’ todispel the notion of secrecyand is proud of the donationsit makes to non-Masoniccharities.FuneralsInsurance

It was traditional for manySpanish grandparents -abuelos - to arrange burialinsurance for new nietos -grandchildren, ensuring futurelow premiums and one lessfinancial trauma, no matterhow many years into thefuture that child dies.

The problem with burialinsurance is that you have noidea how much you will pay. Many policyholders have paidmany times over for a funeralthat has not - yet - beenneeded, but if they stoppaying NOW, they will losethe benefit of every premiumpaid.Pre-payment

british companies Avalon andGolden Leaves both offer pre-payment where, for the priceof a funeral NOW, it will beprovided at any time in thefuture, no matter what theprice THeN. Plans start at3.150 €uros.Pre-Pagado Paz was

specifically created to meetthe needs of brits in Jáveawho needed more than the 24hours allowed by Avalon for

the Cremation. Clients couldpay extra for additional days,a church service, and allmanner of extras.

The PPP plan includes upto 7 nights ‘refrigeration’ - toawait arrival of relatives, anda Thanksgiving Service.PPP Round-Tuit Plan

This plan was specificallycreated to protect the spouse -usually the wife - whosehusband never got ‘RoundTuit’ with regard to funeralinsurance or pre-payment.

even if their loved-one isin Intensive Care (or theMortuary), provided a funeralcompany has not beeninstructed, a Round Tuit plancan be arranged withimmediate effect, and oftensaving a considerable amountof money compared to theprice the family wouldotherwise be charged.

CremationCremation is increasinglypopular in Jávea, which hasits own facilities, as well asproviding a service for funeralcompanies from surroundingtowns and villages.

‘balbi’ and his staff atTanatorio Jávea, on the Jáveato Gata road, are as proud oftheir facilities as would be aRolls Royce dealer. Donation of remainsPrior to the introduction ofCremation, and because fewhad relatives to tend a ‘niche’in the Cemetery, many choseto donate their remains formedical research. It is stillpossible and arrangementsneed to be made with theUniversity Teaching Hospitalin San Juan.Interment

You can choose for yourcoffin to be placed in a‘niche’ in the Cemetery, butthey are expensive to buy(depending on where, and atwhich level you choose) andif you rent, and do not renewthe premium, the remains canbe removed, and re-interredwith others, in a communalniche.GardeningHelp is available from

GibraltarThe story was told that FelipeGonzalez (Spain’s PrimeMinister at the time) metMargaret Thatcher at aeuropean Congress, and toldher “You can keep Gibraltar ifwe can have Jávea back!”

Gibraltar is still a populardestination for brits who wantto marry in Spain, but baulkat the need to have documentsrelating to birth, Marriageand any Divorce orbereavement translated intoSpanish (currently at 90€uros each page) so they canbe submitted to the Spanishauthorities, for a Spanishwedding.

Pine TreesPollen from pine trees

will be a major problem toanyone suffering from hayfever, from as early as March, each year. Needles & Caterpillars

The strange ‘pear-shaped’bags hanging from pine treesthat look as though they havebeen created by over-activespiders, are the day-timeresting place of caterpillarsthat graze on pine needles atnight. The adult, as a moth, lays around 300 eggs inAugust that hatch a monthlater.

When fully grown, theCaterpillars can be seen in aprocession, as if holding each

other’s tail with their ownhead, and have a poisonousprotein on every hair of theirbody, as they search - usuallyduring March - for soft soil inwhich to pupate. Contact withhuman skin can produceextreme redness and swellingand any pet which disturbs aprocession should beimmediately taken to a Vet.

It is said, that byremoving pine tree branchesbelow 3 metres (but DO NOTcut them where there arebaskets of these enemies)protects the tree because thefeeble female moth cannot flythat high. Plumber

The easiest method is toplace a plate of some kind inthe toilet pan, between theseat and the water.

This is a translation ofthe instructions to obtain asample (from your sample)for the Insalud to test.1) Unscrew and remove thegreen cap of the tube theysend you.

Fill in the label with theinformation requested: Name,Age, Sex and Date.2) Insert the strip into thesample several times, movingit horizontally and vertically3) Insert the strip into thesample bottle. Close the lidand shake vigorously.

Take the sample to theInsalud as soon as possible. Ifthere is a delay, store thecontainer in the refrigerator (2- 10 º C).

The purpose of the test isto detect the presence ofblood, which is a commonsymptom of variouspathologies.

You no longer needfollow any kind of diet beforethe test.

Do not take the testduring menstruation dates orif you are a patient withbleeding hemorrhoids.

Avoid the stool becomingcontaminated with urine.

If the liquid comes intocontact with eyes, mouth orskin, wash the area with waterand seek medical treatment ifnecessary.Postal ServiceCorreos has the monopoly forcarrying letters in Spain.Their main office is in PlazaMarina Alta, at the highestpoint in the Old Town.Stamps are also sold inTAbACS.

Postmen only deliver tocertain areas on certain daysand insist that outlying housesprovide community boxeswhere letters for 50 or morehomes can be placed by thepostman, for the owner tocollect.

If a letter that needs asignature arrives, the postmanwill leave an Aviso in the‘buzón’ for you to collect

from the Correos officewithin 15 days.

If you do NOT have a‘buzón’ the postman willlikely leave an Aviso under astone near your house, inexpectation that you will findit! Postage rates (2012)

Schools and EducationSchooling is a pivot point formany families, whenconsidering relocating.

Those who can afford todo so (and that includes manySpanish families) choose anInternational education fortheir children. XabiaInternational College has bothJunior and Senior premises onthe Ctra. Cabo de la Nao anda Kindergarten facility atCosta Nova.

Lady elizabeth Schoolwas founded in Jávea byVeronica barnes, but has nowrelocated to benitachell andLliber.

If there is the possibility ofthe family returning to theUK permanently beforeschooling is complete, privateeducation is often preferable, because it follows the UKcurriculum (more or less)

On the other hand, if youand your children intend tospend the rest of your lives inSpain, best to get immersed assoon as you can, with - free -education in a state-fundedschool.

Some schools in Jáveaused to teach every subject inValenciano, creating doubledifficulties for children notborn here. I am told thatparents now have the optionto choose a school that doesnot teach in Valenciano, ifthey think it would harm theirchild’s education. The LRAU was reated toprevent a landowner fromfrustrating ‘CommunityProjects’ - like a school, hospital or community centre- but was used by corruptdevelopers and Townhalls toallow luxury homes to bebuilt on stolen land, claimingthat ‘high class homes’ weregood for the community.

Jávea had an unacceptablyhigh salt content. Wells werethen purchased in the JalónValley area as everyonewaited for surplus water fromthe River ebro to be broughtto the Costa blanca.

When the Socialists cameto power in Madrid theycancelled the ebro project, compensating contractors andagain left Jávea with theprospect of salty water.

Then Jávea councillorAna Vasbinder is creditedwith bringing Jávea’sDesalination plant to fruition.

WillsIn the UK you can write yourown ‘Last Will andTestament’, have it signed by2 witnesses, and it will governwhat happens to your assetswhen you die.

Spain is totally different.Only a Notary can create thepublic documents thatcontains your final wishes, retaining the original in hisarchives and sendingnotification to the Registry ofWills in Madrid.

Abogados (lawyers) canadvise on the wording wherethere are complications likeprevious marriages orillegitimate children, but youwill have to pay the Notaryfee, whether you have anAbogado or not.

If your situation is notcomplicated - just spouse, car, house and legitimate children- the Notary can provide youwith a template you completeas and where appropriate, sothat all issues are included.

The Original Notary'sOffice is in Historia Chabas,Nº 6 (I think). If you were totravel from the PORT towardsthe town, passing the Ctra.Cabo La Nao, on your left, and on to one-way traffic, atthe junction where USeD TObe SOMe TRAFFICLIGHTS, (with ComptersXabia on your bottom left, and Amparo the Pharmicisttop right, TURN LeFT andHistoria Chabas is the FIRSTlittle road on your RIGHT.Park anywhere you canfind!!!!

The NeW Willsupercedes and replaces anyprevious.

The ORIGINAL isretained by the Notary, whoprovides you with a copy. The Notaria is ObLIGATeDto notify the Archive of Willsin Madrid (Registro CivilCentral de Madrid - deTestamentos y ÚltimasVoluntades) of the name, andplace and date of birth ofeveryone for whom it holdsthe original.

When the Testator isdeceased, on production of acopy of the entry of Death (inDenia Court in the case ofJávea) application can bemade TO MADRID, statingthe reason you want a copy, and asking where the latestdocument is held.

On production of theauthorisation from Madrid, the Notaria will provide youwith a Certified Copy of theOriginal Document.

Spanish Law stipulatesthe inheritance rights of aspouse and children, butallows a brit to choose toleave their assets as they wish- even 100% to the cat ordog’s home - but familyalways have the right tocontest the intentions of theTestator.Window Cleaning

WorkNon-Spaniards - andespecially those who are notfluent Spanish speakers - willfind it VeRY hard to getemployment. employers paya punitive tax for employingstaff, so there is a huge‘black’ labour market wherethe government receivesnothing in respect of IncomeTax or Social Security, andthe employee has no rights, health cover or pension tolook forward to.

Autonomo - selfemployed - is one option, butskills that were amplyrewarded in the UK (PA tothe MD) are worthless inJávea, where villa-cleaning isall you might be offered. Thisis a huge generality, butDON’T listen to people whowill promise you work if yourelocate to Jávea - the chancesare 99.9% against.

XabiActualThis is the title of a TVprogramme, presented eachmonth in english and Spanishby a team of volunteers andreceivable on ‘Swiss Cable’ -Channel 25 and rotates withother local information on acontinuous loop. For avariety of reasons, it is “offair” at present but isexpected back quite soon.

If you see the‘XabiActual’ picture, but hear‘Channel 5 Live’ sound, pushthe OPT button on the remotecontrol for your ‘Swiss’ or‘Key’ digibox, then the right-hand arrow >, and OK to lockyour choice into the digibox.

If you (or a friend) hasinternet, but no access to‘Swiss Cable’ but would liketo see the programme eachmonth an eMail [email protected]

A Jávea property owner wholives in the UK most of the time, and doesn’t receive an IBIdemand (or any other letters) viathe postal service, said sheknows she can ‘pay’ online, butas she doesn’t know how muchto pay “Can I view my IBIonline?”

We asked Yvonne, whostaffs the Help Desk at the CLOTcitizen advice centre, who toldus:

There is no way, at themoment, that someone can seetheir IBI bill online, however, ifthey can send a scannedphotocopy of their passport (inorder for us to see that this isreally the interested party), NIEnumber and details of theproperty (address basically) [email protected] we can print acopy of the bill, scan it, attach itto an e-mail and forward it withpayment instructions.

Normally, if a bill is notreceived by post, it means one oftwo things: either a direct debithas been set up (in which casethe Town Hall does not send abill by post) or it has been sentby post and got lost on the way(usually because of wrong orconfusing addresses).

Anyone in this positionshould contact us and we willsend them a copy of the bill.

We will remember themThere is no feeling so bad asasking someone for news oftheir loved-one, only to hearthat they recently passed intothe here-after. To make thisless likely, we give thanks forthe life of: Barrie Brown

We'll begin with a box, andthe plural is boxes,

but the plural of oxbecomes oxen, not oxes.

One fowl is a goose, buttwo are called geese,

Yet the plural of mooseshould never be meese.

You may find a lone mouseor a nest full of mice,

Yet the plural of house ishouses, not hice.

If the plural of man is alwayscalled men,

Why shouldn't the plural ofpan be called pen?

If I speak of my foot andshow you my feet,

And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?

If one is a tooth and awhole set are teeth,

Why shouldn't the plural ofbooth be called beeth?

Then one may be that, andthere would be those,

Yet hat in the plural wouldnever be hose,

And the plural of cat iscats, not cose.

We speak of a brother andalso of brethren,

but though we say mother,we never say methren.

Then the masculinepronouns are he, his and him,

but imagine the feminine:she, shis and shim!

Let's face it - English is acrazy language.

There is no egg in eggplantnor ham in hamburger;

Neither apple nor pine inpineapple.

english muffins weren'tinvented in england.

We take English forgranted, but if we exploreits paradoxes,

We find that quicksand canwork slowly, boxing rings aresquare,

And a guinea pig is neitherfrom Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writerswrite, but fingers don't fing,

Grocers don't groce andhammers don't ham?

Doesn't it seem crazy that youcan make amends but not oneamend?

If you have a bunch ofodds and ends and get rid ofall but one of them, what doyou call it?If teachers taught, why didn'tpreachers praught?

If a vegetarian eatsvegetables, what does ahumanitarian eat?Sometimes I think all thefolks who grew up speakingenglish should be committedto an asylum for the verballyinsane.

In what other language dopeople recite at a play andplay at a recital? We ship by truck but sendcargo by ship...

We have noses that run andfeet that smell.

We park in a driveway anddrive in a parkway.

And how can a slim chanceand a fat chance be the same,

While a wise man and awise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at theunique lunacy of a language,in which your house can burnup as it burns down,

In which you fill in a formby filling it out, and in whichan alarm goes off by goingon?

Help and Adviceon Facebook

each week, it seems there arefresh Facebook groups aimedat meeting the needs of thoseliving in Jávea and surroun-ding villages, whether it be tobuy and sell, rent, connect orpraise and shame.

Sadly, the etiquette andtable manners of some guestsleaves a lot to be desired (andI am no snob) with gratuitousinsults being hurled anddamage done to businessreputations - eitherintentionally - or without anythought of consequences.

Following in the footstepsof the britsInSpain2003group at Yahoo, a newFacebook source of help andinformation has beenlaunched: jáveaselfhelpline

Perhaps we will meet there- I certainly hope so?
