Regular exercise is important to good health and a long life. Just don’t sabo-tage your workout with these common mistakes:

• Overestimating the impact. A 20-minute workout won’t erase all the calo-ries in a 12-inch pizza. Walking or running a mile, for example, only burns about100 calories.

• Overeating before exercise. You need energy to exercise, but don’t overdoit. A small snack rich in carbs is best—along with being hydrated.

• Overeating after exercise. Don’t pig out after you work out. Fix a meal richin protein and healthy carbs, like an egg on whole wheat toast or oatmeal withblueberries.

moneywise

When creating the fami-ly’s budget, it is easyto look at individual

categories and determine thatthey are too expensive or thatthere are cheaper alternativeselsewhere. If the cell phone bill is $200 a

month, a basic online searchcould reveal that anotherprovider o$ers the same servicefor half the price. In this respect, budgeting is often a very apples-to-apples comparison thatpromises easy decisions.Food, on the other hand, is a

bit di$erent. A family does notwant to overpay for the specificitems that they buy, but findingthe total dollar figure for thebudget can be a little nebulous.People may say they want tospend less, but how low is lowenough? What is a normal budget?Luckily, the USDA tries to do

a little bit of the homework

when it comes to food spending.According to their monthly re-ports, for instance, a thriftyfamily of four should be paying$554 per month while the liber-ally spending family spends$1,084. There is quite a gap, butat least it provides some base-line for spending.Tallying up spending over a

few months will show themonthly average which can thenbe compared to the national av-erages, but remember thatbudgeting is highly dependenton factors such as income andlocation as well asfood prepara-tion habits. There is noone-size-fits-all number. How to reducespendingAccording to

Forbes, there are manyways to help reduce spending at

the grocery store such as:• Limit Alcohol: Alcohol can

be a very expensive addition.• Bulk up:Making bread at

home or bulk cooking stapleslike rice or beans can save timeand money

• Plan menus two weeksahead: Planning ahead helpsavoid impulse buys and fastfood. It also makes dinner quick-er to prepare on busy nights.

• Have a meal prep day: Takea few hours every week or twoto make casseroles, soups andsimple meals that can be frozen

and quickly preppedlater.Remember that

making changes to abudget should hap-pen step-by-step toavoid giving up quicklydue to discomfort. In-cremental changes areeasier to maintain and

help to make adapting easier.

Don’t let these habits ruin your workout

Eggs, EggsEverywhere!

Eggs used for dyeing andhunting need to be handledcarefully if you want to eatthem later. A few simple rulesto eat by:• Only eggs hard-boiled inplain water and then dyed innatural or commercial dye aresuitable for eating. This iscalled the “cold dyeingmethod.”• Eggs cooked and dyed atthe same time in boiling water(“hot dyeing method”) are fordecoration only.• Hard-cooked eggs for anegg hunt must be preparedwith care to prevent crackingthe shells. If the shells crack, bacteria could contaminatethe inside. • Make sure your eggs do notstay outside of refrigeration forlonger than two hours.• Eat hard-cooked eggs (in theshell or peeled) within oneweek.
