THIS WEEK’S: 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading — (Zechariah 9:9-10)
Responsorial Psalm — (Psalm 145)
Second Reading — (Romans 8:9, 11-13)
Gospel — (Matthew 11:25-30)
NEXT WEEK’S: Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading— The Bible views God’s
Word as a force, an active agent that effects
what it sets out to do. God’s word never “goes
in one ear and out the other.” Such ineffec-
tiveness is not within the nature of the Word
of God. God’s Word is efficacious.
(Isaiah 55:10-11)
Responsorial Psalm— “The seed that falls
on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest.”
(Psalm 65)
Second Reading— Paul’s reflection in this
reading is filled with hope and confidence in
the midst of suffering, something that each
person experiences in a unique, individual way.
As he writes about suffering, Paul addresses all
of us, nudging us to reflect on our own under-
standing, since human responses to suffering
are as individual as the sufferings themselves.
For Paul, present suffering that will be
changed to future joy is only part of the truth
to be revealed. He says that even now we
already have the first fruits of the Spirit; we
already have a taste or a down payment of
the glory that will be ours fully in the future.
That means that we not only await glory, but
we experience it even now, even in the midst
of our hardships. Paul is announcing here the
Good News of God’s glory that encompasses
past, present and future.
(Romans 8:18-23)
Gospel— There are three distinct move-
ments in this reading. First is the parable
itself. Second is Jesus’s response to the
question of why He teaches in this cryptic
manner. Third is the allegorical interpretation,
placed on the lips of Jesus, of the various
elements of His story.
By their nature, parables require effort to
understand and apply. Therefore, such
constructs will be more accessible to seekers,
those disposed to explore a story’s meaning,
than to listeners at large. Reflecting on Semit-
ic thought, the Gospel presents understanding
as a special gift that God bestowed upon true
disciples but withheld from the crowds. How-
ever, individuals are held responsible for failing
to understand because they “look but do not
see and hear but do not listen.”
(Matthew 13:1-23)

The IT Network Modernization Fund
From the Archdiocesan Fulcrum Foun-dation’s Summer 2017 Newsletter:
“Some of the very best teaching and learning today is supported by innova-tive technology and on-line resources—tools that help teachers challenge their students to reach their highest and full-est potential. Access to these great learning tools requires fast and reliable connections to the internet. Fulcrum's new IT Network Modernization Fund is helping our schools with network opti-mization and installation of high quality technology.” Queen of Angels school was noted in the article as being a perfect example of how this new program works. Be-ginning in 2015, Ann Austin began working with people from this pro-gram to replace the old copper wiring that had been feeding internet to the building and install wireless internet. By 2017, and thanks to this new part-nership, QA school has wireless access for the entire school campus and is connected to the internet through fiber optic cabling—the very fastest connection possible. What’s more, QA School qualifies for a 70% discount on the fiber optic connection through the Federal e-Rate program, and is now paying less for internet than when they had the old copper wiring. To learn more about Fulcrum’s new IT Fund and Program contact Conne Bruce, Advancement Director, at [email protected].
