Welcome to Norton canes High School

Coming to secondary school is daunting for everyone and you will be feeling different emotions about

moving from primary school to secondary.

We have put together some information for you to help answer some questions you might have and

to hopefully make your move to secondary school as smooth as possible.

This is Norton Canes High school reception. On your first day in September, you are allowed to come

in to school through reception.

School day

Your school day starts at 8.45am. This is what the school day looks like:

Morning session:

08.45 to 9.45 Period 1 (Plus Registration)

09.45 to 10.45 Period 2

10.45 to 11.00 Break

11.00 to 12.00 Period 3

12.00 to 12.25 Skills - Literacy/Numeracy (in Tutor Groups plus PM Registration)

Afternoon session:

12.25 to 13.10 Lunchtime

13.10 to 14.10 Period 4

14.10 to 15.10 Period 5

It is important that you are in school on time. If you are feeling ill and can’t come into school, your

parents/carers can ring the school on 01543 622600.

On your first day you will have a short assembly in the theatre, this is what our theatre looks like:

Break time and Lunch time

Break is from 10.45 – 11.00am and lunch is from 12.25 – 1.10pm. You will be able to eat in the

cafeteria where there is a range of food available to buy, or you can bring a packed lunch. We have a

huge school field and playground areas where you can spend break time and lunch time.

You would normally pay for items in school using a system called parent pay. It takes a while to set

this up so during September you will be able to pay for food and drinks using cash.

Uniform

In school all pupils wear uniform, there is a uniform list at the end of this booklet for

you to have a look at.

During PE all pupils need to wear a PE kit. There is a PE kit list at the end of this booklet

for you to have a look at.

Equipment

This is the equipment you will need to bring with you every day:

You may also want to bring a water bottle with which you can re-fill using our water

dispenser in the cafeteria.

Lockers

As you will have lessons in different classrooms, you will have to carry your

belongings around with you. To help with this, we have lockers in school, which can

be hired by pupils for you to store your PE kit, coats etc. Your parents/carers will get

more details of this and how to hire them.

Mobile phones

School council put forward a very good case to have mobile phones in school, as a

result of this, you are allowed to bring your mobile phone into school but it should be

off during lesson time. You are only allowed to use your mobile phone in the cafeteria

and outside during break and lunchtimes. Your mobile phone is your responsibility so if you decide to

bring it into school you must make sure you are able to look after it.

Homework

Homework is set by teachers on a system called Show my homework. You will be given

log in details and a demonstration of how to use it when you start year 7 in

September.

The Oasis

The Oasis is a relaxing garden within the school grounds which can be accessed by staff and students

for different purposes.

Key staff

There are a number of members of staff who you will get to know when you arrive in September.

I have listed some of them below so you are familiar with the names.

Special Educational Needs

For students with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or with a special educational need, there

is support we can offer. The team at Norton canes high school is:

Mr Stokes the SENCo and Mrs Simms Assistant SENCo.

We also have ten teaching assistants:

Mrs Bacon – Maths. Mr Haynes – English.

Mrs Gould – Student development centre. Mrs Tonkinson – Humanities.

Mrs Fowler – Visually impaired pupils Miss Lane – Science. Mrs Braithwaite – Humanities. Miss Rees – All subjects.

You may see these people in your lessons. You may also be given a ‘keyworker’, one of these staff will

be who you go to if you have a problem. This will also be the first point of contact for your parents.

Interventions

We also run intervention sessions in school for all students who may need extra support in certain

areas.

The interventions currently include: Lego therapy, fine motor skills / handwriting, dyslexia Gold,

phonics, numeracy (year 10/11), speech and language and physiotherapy.

Student Development Centre

Our Student Development Centre (SDC) is available for all students in the school to access. If a

student has been off school for a long period of time, they may be reintegrated back in through the

SDC, or if there is a valid reason you cannot go to lesson, you may be allowed to work in the SDC, but

your teacher must refer you to Mrs Gould first.

At break times, the SDC is open for students who may not feel they can go into the canteen or

outside. There is a Teaching Assistant present in the SDC at this time

At lunch times year 7, 8, 9 are allowed to eat in the SDC if you cannot go into the canteen for

whatever reason. You will be given a pass to allow you to access this facility. Selected Year 10 and 11

students are allowed into the SDC at 12:50pm.

We encourage all students to use the playground, and after Easter half term, students are taken

outside with the Teaching Assistant. We do this to encourage students who feel they want to go out,

but need support and encouragement to do so.

External agencies

For all students that have extra support from external agencies such as speech and language,

physiotherapy, hearing impaired team. This will all continue if necessary at Norton Canes High School.

Autism Outreach Team visits will still continue at Norton Canes. Kate Perry and another support

can still contact as normal.

Code of dress

How pupils prepare and present themselves for their academic day, is highly important at Norton

Canes High School. Adhering to the code of dress ensures that pupils focus on their academic

studies, and creates a unity amongst the school community where every pupil takes pride in

presenting, and representing, the school by following the Code of Dress. It is felt that this not only

supports pupils in their attainment, but also prepares pupils with valuable life-skills where pride,

presentation and conformity are key skills searched for by employers. Parents should contact the

school if they are unsure whether an item, style or garment is suitable prior to purchase.

Parents are advised to label all items of clothing and equipment that a student brings into school.

Lost property can be viewed in the Reprographics area at the end of the school day. Should a student

not have an item of uniform, parents are asked to notify the school either by providing their child

with a note, or contacting the school office.

Students should wear their uniform smartly and with pride, including on their journey to and from

school, where they continue to represent the school’s values.

OPTIONAL JUMPER

A plain black long sleeved V-necked jumper may be worn under the school blazer. Our uniform

responsible for bringing them to every lesson: a pencil case; at least one pen; a green pen; pencils;

eraser; ruler; pair of compasses; protractor; Casio Scientific Calculator and Reading Book.

Highlighters and a purple pen would also be of benefit but not compulsory.

Any pupils found using a phone will have it confiscated until the end of the day when parents will

be asked to collect them. If a message is needed to be sent to a pupil, or received by a pupil,

messages can be sent and received via the school telephone system. Electronic games, personal
