TO ALL THINGS

SROW 2019

Welcome to Myrtle Beach

GOALSThere are a few reminders and things to think about to fully prepare for the SROW experience. COMMITMENT TO LEARNINGSROW is an opportunity to learn from some of the best teachers from across the region. Whether your orientation program is well-established or is just getting started, SROW was developed for professionals, graduate students, and undergraduate student leaders to engage in both teaching and learning from others. SROW is first and foremost an educational conference. FELLOWSHIPOne of the goals of the weekend is for you to build strong relationships with your peers across the region. We hope you take the opportunity to engage with folks from across states, institution sizes and types (public, private, HBCUs, etc.), and everything in between. SROW is a place to be with people who just get it. RESPECTWe know “rivalries” exist between many of the schools attending SROW. However, SROW is an opportunity to put those differences aside, engage in the learning process, and actually cheer each other on for once (don't worry, we won't tell your friends back on campus!).

CONFERENCE ARRIVAL & PARKING PARKINGUse the address 104 Founders Drive, Conway, SC 29526 to give you a general idea of where you are going. The drop off point for SROW is located on the backside of the building. Use the directions linked here when you are getting close to campus in order to reach the drop off point.Parking passes are not needed for SROW.

VOLUNTEERSIf you or any members of your delegation have signed up to volunteer, an email with sign up instructions was sent out on February 28th. However, we are always on the look-out for more tacky tourists willing to volunteer! You can sign up in advance for volunteer shifts at: http://signup.com/go/WASjhPn or look during check-in for any open spots. There are volunteer opportunities for undergraduate students, graduate students, and professional staff members. If you have any questions about the volunteer schedule, please email [email protected].

Feel free to bring buttons, stickers and trinkets to spread your love for your school to others across the region.

The goal is for each participating team to capture the spirit of everything SROW is. There is a list of criteria below you should utilize while making your decision on who to vote for.

Be a team-player and support not only your institution but other institutions around you at SROW.Bring energy and school pride all weekend at SROWBoost morale and have a great attitude each dayBe inclusive of all schools and teamsRespect the host’s campus

SPIRIT AWARDSThere will be four winners for Spirit in SROW. We

understand the groups you bring to SROW may not consist of your entire staff or be proportionate to the overall size of your institution. Therefore, institutions

will be grouped based on the size of their delegation at SROW. We will also have an overall winner in this

category.

VOTING PROCESSEach undergraduate participant will be allowed to cast one vote via the Google Form, which will be located in Guidebook. Voting will open March 16, 2019 at 6 p.m. and will close March 17, 2019 at midnight (6 hours of

range (Small, Medium, Large). Participants are not allowed to vote for their school. The winner for each

delegation range will be the institution that receives the most votes. The winner of the overall category will be

the institution with the most votes out of any of the delegation range. The overall winner will be removed

PREPARING FULLYThere are a few other questions you might have and we hope the information below helps you plan accordingly. ATTIRENew this year, we are having Spirit Sunday! We encourage participants to show their school spirit through their attire; a conference t-shirt will not be provided. Also, please take note of the schedule changes as the social will now take place on Friday. In the past, some institutions have had an outfit change for the social, but we recommend arriving on Friday in what you will wear for the whole day. The tackier, the better! COFFEE NEEDSWe have worked with our dining services team to ensure Einstein’s and Starbucks will both be open on Saturday until mid-afternoon. If this is a need/want for you or your students, you will need to bring money to cover the cost. CONFERENCE PROGRAM The full SROW 2019 program book will be posted on the NODA website a few days prior to the conference, and printed versions will not be handed out at registration. STEPPING AND STROLLINGPrior to coming to SROW, we encourage you to spend a little time with your students discussing the historical and cultural context and significance of stepping and strolling. While many of our students love participating in these elements of SROW, many of them do not understand the historical and cultural roots of this practice. Below are a few talking points to help guide your conversation: SWAG BAGSDue to a record number of participants this year, bags will not be given out to graduate students or professionals this year. Please make arrangements around this. WEATHERWeather in the Grand Strand can be beautiful and also unpredictable. The spring on the coast of South Carolina can bring with it a range of weather. The highs can be in the mid to upper 70s and lows in the mid 30s. We suggest you prepare your delegations to bring an umbrella and/or rain jacket in case of scattered weather. Keep an eye on the weather, and be sure to pack accordingly. Additionally, all indoor facilities are air-conditioned so you may go from heat to cool in seconds. A light jacket or sweater is recommended when inside. TRAFFICLike the weather, traffic is Myrtle Beach can be unpredictable. Even though you may be staying 10 miles away, it could take you 45-minutes to get to campus. Make sure you give yourself enough time to travel in order to make it on time.

“Gumboot Dance” originated in the gold mines of South Africa during the 19th Century.Black workers were not allowed to speak so they adapted traditional dances and rhythms to the only instruments they had - their boots and bodies.Africans used dancing in circles to symbolize unity and strength, which is what the members of NPHC organizations use strolling for in the present day.The first step show took place in 1976 at Howard University. Stepping was known as The Death March, the final step of the new member process of Black Greek Letter Organizations.
