Hymn To Remember Charles Wesley

Author: Robert Lowry (1826-1899)

Scriptures: Matt 27:29, Mrk 16:1-6, Lk 23:50-54, Jn 1:1-2, Jn 20:1-18, Acts 2, 1 Cor 15, Rev 5:10.

1 Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King:

peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!" Joyful, all ye nations, rise,

join the triumph of the skies; with th'angelic hosts proclaim, "Christ is born in Bethlehem!"

Refrain: Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King"

2 Christ, by highest heaven adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord,

late in time behold him come, offspring of the Virgin's womb: veiled in flesh the Godhead see;

hail th'incarnate Deity, pleased as man with man to dwell,

Jesus, our Emmanuel. [Refrain]

3 Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all he brings,

risen with healing in his wings. Mild he lays his glory by,

born that man no more may die, born to raise the sons of earth,

born to give them second birth. [Refrain]

4 Come, desire of nations, come! Fix in us thy humble home:

Rise, the woman’s conquering seed, Bruise in us the serpents head. Ad-ams like-ness now ef-face, Stamp thine image in its place;

Second Ad-am from a-bove, Re-in-state us in thy love.

CHARLES WESLEY (1707–1788) Charles Wesley, M.A. was the great hymn-writer of the Wesley family, perhaps, taking quantity and quality into consideration, the great hymn-writer of all ages. Charles Wesley was the youngest son and 18th child of Samuel and Susanna Wesley, and was born at Epworth Rectory, Dec. 18, 1707. In 1716 he went to Westminster School, being provided with a home and board by his elder brother Samuel, then usher at the school, until 1721, when he was elected King's Scholar, and as such received his board and education free. In 1726 Charles Wesley was elected to a Westminster studentship at Christ Church, Oxford, where he took his degree in 1729, and became a college tutor. In the early part of the same year his religious impressions were much deepened and he became one of the first band of Oxford Methodists.

176 Words.

“Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.”

(Ps 119:98)

Wisdom comes only from the Lord, “Thou” says the Psalmist art the disposer of

wisdom, he is the source of it, he too its storehouse (Prov 2:6). Not only does he give wisdom to all who ask of it (James 1:5), but he restrains wisdom from those who do not hear its call (Prov 1:20-24).

But what we discover in this text is that the storehouse of wisdom is not in a secret place, it’s not inaccessible to us, the wisdom of the Lord is readily available “…through thy commandments”. O, the thought that the wisdom of the ages has condescended to the pages of a book for the benefit of us all, but how many are they that avail themselves of the well of wisdom in the scriptures? So few they are that lower the pale into its waters and draw up even those words that make us “wiser than mine enemies”, yet so simple is the opportunity!

If we might turn its pages and remember its contents, no foe will prevail over us, and his wisdom be “ever with me”.

Prayer and Faith

Delay is often the test and the strength of faith. How much patience is required when these times of testing come! Yet faith gathers strength by waiting and praying. Patience has its perfect work in the school of delay. In some instances, delay is of the very essence of the prayer. God has to do many things, antecedent to giving the final answer—things which are essential to the lasting good of him who is requesting favour at His hands.

Jacob prayed, with point and ardour, to be delivered from Esau. But before that prayer could be answered, there was much to be done with, and for Jacob. He must be changed, as well as Esau. Jacob had to be made into a new man, before Esau could be. Jacob had to be converted to God, before Esau could be converted to Jacob.

Among the large and luminous utterances of Jesus concerning prayer, none is more arresting than this:

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on Me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto My Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in My Name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask anything in My Name, I will do it.”

How wonderful are these statements of what God will do in answer to prayer! Of how great importance these ringing words, prefaced, as they are, with the most solemn verity! Faith in Christ is the basis of all working, and of all praying. All wonderful works depend on wonderful praying, and all praying is done in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amazing lesson, of wondrous simplicity, is this praying in the name of the Lord Jesus! All other conditions are depreciated, everything else is renounced, save Jesus only. The name of Christ—the Person of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ—must be supremely sovereign, in the hour and article of prayer.

If Jesus dwell at the fountain of my life; if the currents of His life have displaced and superseded all self-currents; if implicit obedience to Him be the inspiration and force of every movement of my life, then He can safely commit the praying to my will, and pledge Himself, by an obligation as profound as His own nature, that whatsoever is asked shall be granted. Nothing can be clearer, more distinct, more unlimited both in application and extent, than the exhortation and urgency of Christ, “Have faith in God.”1

ASIA BIBI FINALLY FREE AND OUT OF PAKISTAN

08May2019

Asia Bibi has finally been allowed to leave Pakistan – six months after she was acquitted of ‘blasphemy’ and her life sentence quashed.

She has arrived in Canada, where two of her daughters have already been granted asylum, her lawyer told CNN.

PraiseGodthatAsia’sten-yearordealisfinallyover! Asia has spent the past six months in protective custody, unable to leave Pakistan, amid death threats from extremists. After her acquittal at the Supreme Court on October 31, thousands took to the streets demanding she be killed and calling for the overthrow of the Government.

Her nightmare began in June 2009 when she was charged with blasphemy after sharing a cup of water with her co-workers on a farm in Punjab. They called her unclean because she was a Christian.

Persecution of Christians 'coming close to genocide' in Middle East – report Millions uprooted from homes, says UK-commissioned report, with many jailed and killed

Pervasive persecution of Christians, sometimes amounting to genocide, is ongoing in parts of the Middle East, and has prompted an exodus in the past two decades, according to a report commissioned by the British foreign secretary, Jeremy Hunt.

Millions of Christians in the region have been uprooted from their homes, and many have been killed, kidnapped, imprisoned and discriminated against, the report finds. It also highlights discrimination across south-east Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and in east Asia – often driven by state authoritarianism. “The inconvenient truth,” the report finds, is “that the overwhelming majority (80%) of persecuted religious believers are Christians”.

Some of the report’s findings will make difficult reading for leaders across the Middle East who are accused of either tolerating or instigating persecution. The Justice and Development (AK) party of the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, for instance, is highlighted for denigrating Christians.

Hunt described the interim report – published on Thursday, based on a review led by the bishop of Truro, the Rt Rev Philip Mounstephen – as “truly sobering”, especially since it came as “the world was seeing religious hatred laid bare in the appalling attacks at Easter on churches across Sri Lanka, and the devastating attack on two mosques in Christchurch”.

Hunt, an Anglican, has made the issue of Christian persecution one of the major themes of his foreign secretaryship. “I think we have shied away from talking about Christian persecution because we are a Christian country and we have a colonial past, so sometimes there’s a nervousness there,” he said. “But we have to recognise – and that’s what the bishop’s report points out very starkly – that Christians are the most persecuted religious group.”

He added: “What we have forgotten in this atmosphere of political correctness is actually the Christians that are being persecuted are some of the poorest people on the planet. In the Middle East the population of Christians used to be about 20%; now it’s 5%.”2

Give An Answer…A Reason For The Hope (1 Pet 3:15)

Today’s Consistent Inconsistency When Bible Colleges Don’t Believe Their Bibles

My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. (James 3:1)

When the consideration of Bible colleges was put forward in the first part of this particular address two weeks ago, we left off with the following questions;

• What are we to consider of the institutions our churches have delegated to crown such men [Pastors] they deem suited to the task?

• With such a focal point in Christianity today, are Bible colleges given any praise or admonition or charge in scripture?

• Do they bare any responsibility in the Bible for churning out many masters? • Do Bible Colleges “have the rule” over anybody in the Bible? • Are they to be submitted unto as “they that must give an account”? • Do they even appear at all?

Bible colleges are todays default training institutions for pastors and ministry workers. The church has long ago been displaced by what seems the most pragmatic of opportunities alleviating the man who was originally charged by God for such work, the Pastor. The work of the Pastor, as the individual given the most noble and responsible of positions for the body of Christ, and thereby this present world, is to ensure the Church diligently attends to the commission for which it was charged of the Lord, notably to preach the gospel (Mrk 16:15-18), and to make disciples of men, teaching all nations (Matt 28:18-20). One might therefore be right to be astounded at this new focal effort for a body hardly addressed in the New Testament, yet now endowed with the greatest responsibility of all institutions. Their charge is no less than to create men of such biblical caliber as to effect the eternal confidence of a global population! This organization however has been responsible for creating the greatest condensation of heretical ideas ever witnessed in the body of Christ. This is not an unqualified statement, the current 21st century Laodicean nature of The Church is the end result of their centuries long ‘ministry’. Every biblical doctrine has been questioned, effecting a rise of a babble of denominations, that, when there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? (1 Cor 14:23b), and the world indeed does! Thousands of denominations have arisen in their respective sub groups, distinct from anything that once represented the mainstream Church. At the head of such a representation stands the Bible College or Seminary. These, ‘all care and no responsibility’ institutions, have largely turned away the passionate hearts of the Godly men who first attended with such hope of growing in the knowledge of the word of God, and to grow in their love for their Saviour. But, having attended as little as a year in such institutions, students quickly see themselves as puffed up stewards of ‘secret knowledge’. Excited to tell their biblically ignorant congregations things certainly not apparent in their Bibles, unwittingly displacing the Bible as the congregants final authority.

Page 11: Welcome to Hope Baptist Church · The Necessity of Prayer EM Bounds Prayer and Faith Delay is often the test and the strength of faith. How much patience is required when these times

11

Arguably most of these new ‘spots’ in our feasts of charity (Jude 12), puffed up with pride of new knowledge, create doubt in the very book they have been charged to teach, and remove from the lambs any true sustenance to help them grow (Jn 21:16-17), diluting Christianity to mere opinion. It is in the Bible College / Seminary that students are first taught to doubt the scriptures. In my nation of Australia, I am not aware of a single college that teaches the Bible is (present tense) the very word of God, and not create doubt in it. Indeed, it is The Scholar of such institutions that first suggested the need of revising the very word of God from the beginning (2 Cor 2:17). Let’s consider just two of the many statements made just before that first English revision in 1881;

“Revisions at moderate intervals of fifty years, will keep alive the idea of man’s limited acquaintance with the original Scriptures in all the fullness of their meaning, and prevent superstitious attachment to the letter. Whatever checks bibliolatry is good and profitable.” (Samuel Davidson, On a Fresh Revision of the English Old Testament, 1873)

And this;

“This translation [American Unitarian Association] is a decided help in the great battle against Bibliolatry and the doctrine of verbal and plenary inspiration. Every new version, even if it be not so good as this, aids in overthrowing the power of the ‘Paper-Pope’ which has ruled Protestantism as with a rod of iron [Referring to the King James Bible]...” (Sidney H. Morse, Joseph B. Marvin, The Radical, Vol. 5, 1869)

To Who’s Benefit?

As startling as that might be ,we ask of the beneficiary. The word of God in our language came to us through the wonderful reformation era of the 16th century. It was that harlot of harlots, the Roman Catholic Church who had the greatest loss and that for several centuries, for the word of God deposed the Papal cult. Sadly however, through the Bible Colleges and Seminaries and having created sufficient doubt in the word of God, the scholar still sits with the feeling of a lack of accomplishment for the ongoing revision of that sacred book, impatient to continue.

To mother church many return, this was not lost on the papists as they rejoiced in the dislodging of the English Bible from its infallible throne even at the time of the first revision of the KJV.

“One thing at least is certain; the Catholic Church will gain by the New Revision, both directly and indirectly. Directly, because old errors are removed from the translation; indirectly, because the ‘Bible-only’ principle is proved to be false...the New Version will be the death-knell of Protestantism...Their fundamental doctrine of verbal inspiration is undermined.” (The Dublin Review, Burns and Oates, 1881)

“The Revisers have done an act of justice to Catholics...It is now at length too evident that Scripture is powerless without the [Catholic] Church...And it will now be clear to all men which is the true Church, the real Mother to whom the Bible of right belongs.”

(The Dublin Review, Burns and Oates, 1881)
