The Fourth of July
As Catholic Americans celebrating the Fourth of July, we might ask ourselves how do we as a country, and as individuals, continue to
build up our nation in a way, that we can also fulfill our mission to live as true disciples of Christ.
For many the Fourth of July is centered on the parades, fireworks or store sales. Hopefully, it will be a true holiday spent with family,
friends, picnics and fun. However, part of the day, especially when it falls on a weekend, should be spent in church, thanking the Good
Lord for the gift of freedom that we have experienced, and recalling the courage of those who risked everything - way back in 1776, and
every year since then - so that we might continue to live in freedom.
The most famous words in the Declaration of Independence are: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,
that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
But what do those words: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness really mean?
Life for some, means a total focus on oneself, life is all about me. For Catholics, life means the recognition that every person, including
myself, from natural conception to natural death, is child of God the Father, who finds redemption through God the Son, and is created
anew by God the Holy Spirit. Life is seen as a gift, to be used for good in our families and our society.
Liberty for some, means the freedom to do whatever they want, regardless of its consequences. For Catholics, liberty means the free-
dom to do what is right and good - based on God’s law written in our hearts and taught by Jesus and His Church. Pope John Paul II
once reminded Americans: “Every generation of Americans needs to know that freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having
the right to do what is good.”
The Pursuit of happiness for some, means to focus all one’s time and energy on obtaining material things, taking pleasures in immoral
activities, or seeking our worth and value apart from God's call to holiness.
For Catholics, the pursuit of happiness means growing and maturing into better persons through a deeper relationship with Christ, and
making use of the Sacraments, so that we may be a good spouse, parent, neighbor and citizen. Using our rights to life, liberty and the
pursuit of happiness in a God-centered way, assures that we will be good Catholic Americans in this generation.
In 2015, being some will tell us that we cannot be both a good Catholic and a good citizen at the same time. They are very wrong.
Some will see our fidelity to Jesus and His teachings, as enshrined in Christian moral values and principles, as making us bad citizens
and even trouble makers. They see Christianity as an enemy and Christian moral standards as old fashioned. They will seek to enshrine
laws which force Christians to reject their religion, instead of protecting the rights of Christians to practice their Religion.
We had seven lawyers in black robes forcing this nation in 1973, to accept abortion as the law of the land, allowing for the murder of
infants in the womb. In 2015, we have seen 5 lawyers in black robes, forcing this nation to reject God's definition of marriage, and re-
placing it with a man-made definition. They are also rejecting by this ruling the idea that the human race was created by God and that
He has imprinted upon our bodies the reality of male and female. True freedom in our society, which has always been based on Judeo-
Christian moral values cannot last, if it is separated from God and His moral principles. And history has shown this to be true. What
kind of freedom do we really have, if we become slaves and robots of the government?
A European visited America in the 1800s and marveled at the vibrancy of our country and then issued a warning we might reflect upon.
He wrote: “I sought for the greatness and genius of America . . .Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits
aflame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America
ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”
On this Fourth of July let us gives thanks for the freedoms we still have. But let us also stand up as true Catholics and true citizens, to
promote and defend Christian morality. We are good citizens by being good Christians. We Catholics are called by Christ to be "salt"
and "light" for the good of our families and for the good of our society, so that we and our country might be pleasing in the eyes of God.
In the first reading at Mass, from the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel, God complains to the prophet that His people have become rebels,
who rebel against Him, and that their hearts have become obstinate, unwilling to listen to the truth. In the Gospel, the people from Naz-
areth reject Jesus and His words, when He tried to correct them, and show them the way to live so that they would be pleasing in the
eyes of His Heavenly Father.
It has certainly become more difficult to be a faithful practicing Catholic in recent years. But only if we live as true Christians, according
to the teachings of Jesus, will we exercise our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in ways that will not only build up this
earthly nation, but will also build up God’s kingdom as well.

'What is being proposed is not marriage' – Pope calls for defense of family By Elsie Harris
Pope Francis warned that the sacrament of marriage has been reduced to a mere association, and urged participants to be witnesses in a secular world. “The family is being hit, the family is being struck and the family is being bastardized,” said Pope Francis. He warned against the common view in society that “you can call anything a family. What is being proposed is not marriage, it's an asso-
ciation. But it's not marriage! It's necessary to say these things very clearly and we have to say it!” Pope Francis stressed. He lamented that there are so many “new forms” of unions which are “totally destructive and limiting the greatness of the love of mar-riage." In his answers to questions regarding marriage, Pope Francis explained that contemporary society has “devalued” the sacrament by turning it into a social rite, removing the most essential element, which is union with God. He continued, that from a sociological and Christian point of view “there is a crisis in the family because it's beat up from all sides and left very wounded!” Witness is key to spreading the Gospel, he said, explaining that true witness means living “in such a way, that others are inspired to live
the same way." However, the Bishop of Rome emphasized that although we are called to give this witness, “we are not the saviors of anyone,” but rather, "we are the transmitters of Jesus, who is the One that already saved us all". True witness propels us out of ourselves and into the streets of the world, the Pope continued, repeating his common declaration that, “a
movement, a Church or a community that doesn't go out to others, becomes sick. Don't be afraid! Go out as missionaries in the places
where you live and work. Get on the road, because we are walkers!”

Pilgrimage to the Holy Land, April 6-19, 2016. Fr. Tom Krieg and Fr. Allan Slowiak are once again teaming up to lead a magnif-icent pilgrimage to Jordan and Israel. This all-inclusive tour will take you to the region of Galilee in its springtime, with three nights at the Sea. Four nights will be in Jerusalem with time in Bethlehem, and a walk on the Way of the Cross which leads to the place of the Lord's crucifixion and his empty tomb, where pilgrims have gone for centuries. Time in Jordan is an introduction to Arab culture and includes a visit to the site of Jesus' baptism, the place of John the Baptist's martyrdom, and a day in the red rock city, Petra, one of the new 7 Wonders of the Ancient World situated in the Valley of Moses. Wausau Community Warming Center-Bed Rolls We have amazing people in the community creating bed rolls for
our homeless guests in the Wausau area. The beds are made
entirely out of plastic grocery bags and measure 3’ by 6’. It takes about 500 to 700 bags per bed roll. If you have any extra plastic
bags that you are able to donate to our Warming Center
located at 540 S Third Avenue in Wausau, we would
