Our strategy Together, we endeavour to be one of the world’s top ten coatings suppliers by 2015. But how will we get there?

Over the years, we’ve worked hard to make Hempel an even stronger company – one better able to serve the needs of our global customers and provide a supportive environment for our employees.

Our efforts laid a solid foundation for growth and, in December 2010, we celebrated the worldwide launch of One Hempel – One Ambition.

One Hempel – One Ambition is our strategy to meet new challenges in a dynamic industry, and a clear plan for growth in three key Hempel markets: quadruple sales in Decorative; double sales in Protective; and become a leading player in Marine Maintenance.

At Hempel, we’ve got more than industrial coatings solutions – we’ve got an eye for beauty as well.

Our growing product range of fine decorative coatings includes high-performance emulsions and enamels, together with

a variety of textured finishes and special effect paints. Our assortment also includes primer/sealers and fillers, providing customers with a complete Hempel decorative system to ensure maximum performance and a beautiful, durable finish.

Long ago, however, we recognised that providing high quality coatings is not enough. offshore wind turbines, to rail cars and massive civil structures. As a result, we have supplied coatings for more than 1500 port cranes, 8000 wind turbines, a number of power plants and many large steel bridges.

Our industry knows no borders and, fortunately for our customers, neither does Hempel quality. A container cannot secure what’s inside without a high quality coating on the outside.

Hempel is a market leader for protective coatings in the Container industry. Ninety-five per cent of the containers in the world are being built in China,

and over a quarter of these are coated with Hempel products. Our pioneering research and development in this industry has also produced the EcoBoxcoat waterborne coating – one of the most high-performing and environmentally responsible container coatings in the world.

Health, Safety and the Environment At Hempel, we understand that the bigger you are, the greater your impact on the world around you. That’s why as we grow, we work even harder to ensure a workplace that is not only safe and healthy, but also one that protects and respects the environments in which we operate.

From integrating sustainable product safety into R&D, to constructing state-of-the-art, energy-efficient factories in Europe and China, Our One Hempel – One Ambition strategy is about more than business growth. Every new evolution of our strategy is aligned with our HSE commitment, while never forgetting our most valuable resource – our people.

Over the years, we’ve expanded our original product portfolio and services into many other coatings

markets around the world, eventually evolving into the Hempel Group of Companies. To secure a sound future for the Hempel Group and its subsidiaries, J.C. Hempel transferred all his shares to the Hempel Foundation in 1948. Today, the Hempel Foundation remains the sole shareholder of the Hempel Group.

All of the operational companies within the Hempel Group are owned wholly or in part by the Hempel Foundation. Daily management is handled through Hempel A/S, headquartered near Copenhagen, Denmark. Employees are represented on the Foundation board as well as on the board of the holding company. This independence gives the Group full freedom to pursue its commitment towards our employees, customers and product innovation.

Our history In July 1915, 21-year-old Jørgen Christian Hempel became Denmark’s youngest licensed wholesaler when he established J.C. Hempel Marine Paints A/S. With the motto of ‘Quality and Service’, his mission was to create consistent quality coatings for a dynamic and growing industry.

Who We are

Page 20: Welcome to Hempel

The Hempel Foundation J.C. Hempel was more than a talented businessman; he was also a visionary thinker and one of the first business owners in Denmark to provide his employees with benefits. He believed strongly that companies had a responsibility to their employees and their communities.

I t is this spirit of caring that is at the core of the Hempel Foundation. Though J.C. Hempel died in 1986, the Hempel Foundation is still guided by his philosophies.

While the main purpose of the Hempel Foundation is to provide a sound economic basis for the Hempel Group, it also supports charitable projects around the world. Many of these initiatives aim to give children the opportunity to build a brighter future for themselves and their society through comprehensive education programmes. The Hempel Foundation supports schools in Cambodia, China, Argentina and Africa, amongst other projects.

Through these and other initiatives, the Hempel Foundation strives to do what it can to carry on J.C. Hempel’s legacy and to help make the world a better place.

Did you know…? There’s a lot to know about the Hempel world, but here are a few facts that might surprise you.

Hempel has been protecting offshore wind turbines since the very beginning of the industry when the first wind turbine park was erected offshore near Vindeby, Denmark in 1991.

The new Hempel factory in Poland has the ability to supply up to 60 million litres of paint per year. That’s enough to coat three-quarters of a million 20-foot cargo containers.

Coatings supplied by Hempel UK for the Tower Bridge are guaranteed to last up to 25 years.

If all container manufactures switched to using waterborne coatings like Hempel’s Ecoboxcoat, the annual output of volatile organic compounds VOCs could be reduced by nearly 90 per cent.

If applied to the entire world fleet, the fouling control coating Hempasil X3 could save the world from 90 million tonnes of CO2 a year, equal to the amount of CO2 emitted by Greece.
