Homes are where we live our lives, and are an expression of who we are and who we aspire to be. We understand that real estate is not just a transaction- it is a major life transition.

Sellers passing their home to the next owner deserve adept representation by an advocate, and marketing that conveys the emotion and experience of being in the spaces. People buying should be expertly represented and cared for in the process.

If you are considering making a purchase or selling your home, we are dedicated to providing the genuine, personal level of service you deserve.

Letter from FATHER MIKE

Letter from SUSAN STEELE

Friends,

Welcome to Bollywood, the 2015 Madeleine Auction.

This year’s auction marks an opportunity to look back as we move forward. It’s a return to our campus for the first time in a couple years. A chance to reflect on the room and building you’re sitting in right now, built by the hard work of parents like you and parishioners such as those sitting amongst you. A time to look back and celebrate the wondeful works of our Honorary Chairs, Jim and Terry O’Hanlon, and Dorothy MGinnis and her late husband, Hugh. Families whose generosity, hard work and commitment to the Church, the parish, the school, and the community have left a legacy we all benefit from and should strive to emulate.

Looking forward, The Madeleine Auction is the biggest fundraiser, and premiere event, at The Madeleine. An opportunity to generously support our parish school, and most importantly, our children. So as we enjoy this fabulous meal, join in the revelry and frantic bidding for wonderful trips and events, and dance late into the evening...let us not lose sight of this goal.

Thank you for being here...now, let the bidding begin!

Father Mike

Welcome!

Each year when I am asked to write a welcome letter, I try to be so clever and draw from the auction theme to craft the text. Recalling the past few years, images of Madeleine in Wonderland, Madopoly, Cirque de Madeleine, Casablanca, Home in the Northwest, etc. come to mind. This year, Bollywood presented a challenge because I was not as familiar with the music, culture, and traditions needed to compose a theme-based letter. However, as the auction planning unfolded over the past nine months, elephants, saris, dancing, tents, music, and vibrant colors all came together to help me understand and appreciate this rich, wonderful experience we’re enjoying tonight.

As unique as the Bollywood theme is, our reason for being here remains the same—to support Catholic education, particularly here at The Madeleine. Like those who came before us, we strive to develop students of faith, character, and compassion within an environment of rigorous academics. You are our partners in this mission. Your presence here tonight demonstrates not just financial support, but also a firm belief that Catholic education nurtures the whole child. Thank you for investing in our future.

Susan Steele

HONORARY CHAIRS OF THE 2015 MADELEINE AUCTION

This year’s Honorary Auction Chairs are two couples who have been active parishioners of The Madeleine for more than 50 years each. And during that time they have provided wonderful examples of living Gospel values through their commitment to service and community.

Jim O’Hanlon and Hugh McGinnis were students at The University of Portland in the late 1940s, when the chaplain of their Blanchet Club told them to “Do something really meaningful, find God in the streets; go out and live the Gospel.” They took those words to heart, and in 1952, along with a small group of fellow UP students, opened The Blanchet House of Hospitality to provide free, hot meals to the homeless and hungry in downtown Portland. Today, Blanchet offers breakfast, lunch and dinner six days a week, and operates a transitional shelter program for men struggling with addictions, unemployment or home and family issues.

Jim and Terry O’Hanlon both attended Catholic schools from grade school through college. And, as young parents, they made the commitment and sacrifice to provide a Catholic education to their children. All seven of the O’Hanlon children attended The Madeleine School, and several grandchildren as well. The O’Hanlons have been active Madeleine

parishioners since 1961 and have supported our community in many ways. Mrs. O’Hanlon worked as a substitute teacher at The Madeleine School and also served on the original board of the Madeleine School Endowment Fund. Mr. O’Hanlon served on the first Parish and School advisory councils. Hugh and Dorothy McGinnis were married at The Madeleine in 1951, and from the beginning of their marriage, they shared a deep commitment to family, faith, and service. Together they raised five children and sent them all to The Madeleine School. Mrs. McGinnis has served as a Eucharistic Minister and member of the Hospitality Committee and Altar Society. Mr. McGinnis, who passed away in September of this year, sang with the Madeleine Choir and served as a Minister of Hospitality and RCIA Sponsor. As active parishioners for over 50 years, Mr. and Mrs. McGinnis were also active in several outreach ministries including Janus Greenhouse, St. Vincent de Paul, and St. Francis Soup Kitchen. Please join us in honoring and thanking Jim and Terry O’Hanlon and Hugh and Dorothy McGinnis for their commitment to Catholic education and service to those in need.

BEST OF THE BEST

This year, you have a choice. Choose from $1,000 cash, or walk home with any Live Auction item except our 7-Day Trip to Kauai or our Phoenix Open Golf Tournament Package—before anyone has a chance to outbid you. Only 100 tickets will be sold at $100 each. The drawing will be held before the Live Auction begins.

TRUNKS OR TAILS

The classic game of Heads or Tails goes Bollywood. Buy strings of beads for $10…the more the better. When the game starts, everyone who’s in will stand up and declare Trunk (heads) or Tails. A coin will be flipped onstage. Everyone who guessed right stays standing…everyone else removes one of their strings of beads…or sits down if they don’t have any beads left. This continues until there’s just one person standing! The winner will take home half the proceeds from everyone’s buy-in. The rest goes to The Madeleine School! Remember, more strings of beads means more chances to win!

LIVE AUCTION ITEMSAuctioneer will seek verbal bids on oral auction items listed in the Oral Auction section. Upon purchase of an item, your bid number will be recorded by a cashier. This number will serve as the bidder’s account number. Certificates for goods and services will be available at the cashier’s table.

SILENT AUCTION RULESAll Silent Auction items have bid sheets nearby. If you desire to bid on an item, write your bid number and amount legibly on the bid sheet. You may bid on each item as often as you please.

Raises must be in the minimum amount specified on the bid sheet. If not observed, your bid will be void. Silent Auction tables close at 6:15 pm and 6:30 pm. When the top (white) bid sheets are removed, bidding on those items has ended. You may check with the cashier at any time to see if you were a successful bidder.

LIABILITYThe written or verbal bid at this auction constitutes a legal contract to purchase the item. All sales are final and there will be no exchanges unless specified by the donor. In all cases of dispute, the decision by the auction officials is final. The Madeleine Parents Club has attempted to clearly catalog and describe all the items presented at the auction. However, all items are sold in “as is” condition. The school neither warrants or represents, and in no way, will be responsible for accuracy of description, authenticity, authorship, or condition of the items presented. No statement contained within the catalog or made orally at the sale or elsewhere will be deemed such a warranty, representation, or assumption of liability. Your receipt for your auction purchases will show the total amount you paid for your items. This amount, minus the approximate value for the items as established by our valuation committee, equals your net charitable donation. The purpose of establishing this value is to comply with federal law. We reserve the right to withdraw any items from sale prior to the call for bids.

ITEM WILL CALLThe majority of Auction Items purchased are easily carried out at the end of the evening. For the few items that require some planning of transportation and an extra pair of hands, you may pick them up from the Old Church during Online Auction distribution times.

COURTESY REMINDERAs a courtesy to our donors please call by January 15, 2016, to discuss reservations for your group events. Please examine your certificate for the name of the contact person to call. Please note all conditions, restrictions, and expiration dates on your purchases. Unless otherwise noted, services, tickets, certificates, etc., must be used within one year of the auction at a time mutually agreeable to the donor and purchaser. Items cannot be converted to cash. Gratuities are not included in certificates unless specified. Friends have been generous in donating their condominium and homes at the beach or mountains. It is the responsibility of the successful bidder to leave these accommodations in good condition. After the

auction, any questions should be directed to the Post-Auction Coordinator: Lynn Robinson, [email protected].

FOR YOUR SAFETYPrior to the festivities, select a designated driver or plan to take a Radio Cab. We’ll gladly pay for your cab ride home to ensure your safety. Simply see one of the auction workers.

PAYMENTWhen you check in you will be asked for the method of payment you wish to use for the items you bid on. If you choose to provide your credit card at the beginning of the event you will eliminate the need to see the cashier at the end of the night. Consider it much like express checkout at a hotel. Your VISA or MasterCard will be swiped and recorded during registration. At the end of the night you can review an itemized receipt. Your credit card will only be charged if you are successful at bidding.

Tonight we embark on a big dream, The Madeleine Mad Science + Arts Wing.

Science, engineering and technology classrooms have transformed into laboratories for critical thinking and innovative design. Educators are finding the more you can tap into the artistic right brain, the more creative and critical the innovation and design process becomes. The arts are finally getting their due respect amongst the most technical minds in the world.

Take a bow!

This year’s paddle raise will go towards building a stronger Science and Arts program. We will procure state of the art science tools allowing for every grade to explore hundreds of experiments and more importantly, the tools to study, analyze and collaborate together with their results. Applied knowledge leads to deeper learning.

With your generosity we will provide modular electronics so our kids will be hands-on with building, creating and engineering their ideas into prototypes so they can test and problem-solve in real time.

Your gifts will also help provide students of every grade level greater access to musical instruments; exposure to a new instrument every year as they progress toward their matriculation. We will invest in a modular and portable stage system that will allow the gym to be transformed into a larger setting for musical and dramatic performances.

We will look to inspire our children to dream big and let them know that we care about providing the tools to reach those dreams.

Please raise your paddles to help The Madeleine’s commitment to preparing our kids for the next step in their education and in the real world. Raising your paddle is a 100% tax deductible gift to our school and a priceless investment in the future leaders of our world.

Be Bold, Be Generous, Dream Big!

PADDLE RAISE—THE MAD SCIENCE + ARTS WING

When we dream of our children’s future, we always dream big.
