Not only are we rich in history, but we also offer a wealth of options.

They’ve come here for generations. The adventurous, the seekers, and those who just need a place to get away from the cares of a busy world. Here in Sun Valley we’re as steeped in history as we are in ski runs. And if that history has taught us anything, it’s that people need a place to indulge their adventurous side as well as their more restful side. Which is why we created our Lift Ticket Exchange Program. Spend a few days letting it all out on the mountain, then redeem a day’s lift pass for one of the many other reasons people return to Sun Valley year after year: Try cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, take your group ice-skating, indulge in a massage, or even a gourmet meal. The choice is yours, and your historic vacation awaits.

TThe Midwest ski season is rapidly approaching, and manylucky skiers and snowboarders are already carving freshtracks out west. We all dream of visiting different resorts, perhaps even other continents. With our member clubs andthe CMSC, you can ski the exotic areas you have alwaysdreamed of, visit different local ski destinations or hit themountains out west. New Zealand, Switzerland, Austria andItaly. Vail, Aspen, Snowmass, Winter Park – and more.

Are you strictly a Midwest skier? You’ll find trips to ski areasin Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa. From Alpine Valleyto Wilmot Mountain, Brule to Shanty Creek – and manypoints in-between. These are just some of the destinationsyou’ll find in the trips listing in this issue. Our member clubsand CMSC still have openings for 2008 and 2009 trips! There’s skiing for all levels of expertise, from novice to pro.

Travel is just one of the many benefits you’ll receive as a skiclub member. Don’t let the generic title of ski club throw you– ski clubs welcome skiers and boarders alike, from beginnerto expert. When you join a club, you’re broadening yourhorizons and meeting a lot of local people that share yourpassion for winter sports. Obviously, clubs have plenty ofwinter happenings – but don’t forget the year-round trips andevents, parties and gatherings.

Clubs have their own culture and style. There are partyclubs, race clubs, and family-oriented clubs. Some clubs areprimarily winter groups, while many are active year-round,offering biking, camping, ball game outings, concertevenings and summer travel. Find one that appeals to you,be it by location, trip destinations or “feel.” You’ll find a guideand map of our member clubs in the back of the magazine.

Is a skiing and boarding club for you? Ask yourself: Do Iwant to meet local skiers…visit more areas with a group ofpeople I know and have become friends with…become a bet-ter skier or boarder…have more fun on the slopes…enjoyworry-free trips? Sure, many people plan their own trips anduse the web to find rock-bottom prices – but it’s like haggling

for a car. You’re never sure if you really got that good a deal, you probably had to cut back somewhere, and more oftenthan not, there’s something wrong. Ski club trip leaders takethe worry and hassle out of planning a complete and enjoy-able vacation or weekend getaway. Trips are carefully craftedby experienced skiers and boarders familiar with the destina-tion. Consider transfers, shuttles, food, accommodations, lifttickets and location. Does “base of the hill” mean a shortwalk to the lift or hill, or is it a 15-minute shuttle ride away?

Often you’ll find that several clubs have planned a trip to thesame destination, with each club adding its own uniqueextras: welcome parties, lift tickets to multiple hills, localnight life, on-hill parties – even discounts on equipmentrental. Full details and updates are available for each trip atour website – www.skiCMSC.org. You’ll also find informationon all our member clubs.

Start the 2008/2009 ski and snowboarding season off right –join a ski club, and really enjoy the winter!

TTHE AMERICAN BLIND SKIING FOUNDATION is a non-

profit organization chartered in the State of Illinois. Since the

1970s, ABSF has been changing the lives of blind skiers,

helping them focus on what they can do instead of what

they cannot. Many blind skiers have commented, “IF I CAN

SKI, I CAN DO ANYTHING.”

ABSF provides an educational downhill skiing program that

is open to any blind or visually impaired person, child

through adult. If they can get into skis, we’ll work with them.

ABSF gives them confidence-building experiences that can

last a lifetime.

What else the visually impaired person gets out of skiing:

KNOWLEDGE that they have challenged themselves in a

non-traditional area for the visually impaired; FUN - the

speed and rush that comes from flying down the hill is inde-

scribable; SOCIAL INTERACTION - sitting down with other

skiers and sharing the excitement and adventure of skiing.

Oh, did I mention that sighted guides for the blind have just

as much fun?

How can you assist and support blind skiers through ABSF?

 Adopt a blind skier

 Adopt a blind ski team

 Become an ABSF volunteer

Donate items that will help ABSF fundraise

Tax deductible contributions to help ABSF operate.

For more information on how you can help support visually

impaired children and adults through ABSF, visit absf.org.

Chicago Week 2008 —Breckenridge

By Teri & Mark Kinney

Saturday, March 29, 2008. Today 240 ski club membersrepresenting 11 clubs from the Chicago Metropolitan SkiCouncil came to Breckenridge, Colorado to start their fun skivacation known as Chicago Week. Travel went smoothly forthe groups and everyone was really excited to be here forthe 27th annual Chicago Week trip. Whoever said therewouldn’t be enough snow should have been here! It wassnowing while some of the groups pulled into Breck! Lots ofus gathered at the Park Avenue Pub where we purchased our$uper $aver Discount Passes and our light up leis! Proceedsfrom this fund raiser are for the Breckenridge OutdoorEducation Center (BOEC), but more about that later. It’sbeen a long day and I need to get some rest for the big wel-come day tomorrow.

Sunday, March 30, 2008. We had to get up really earlytoday to get to breakfast on time. Breakfast was at theForest Room of the Village at Breck and they did a fantasticjob. Scrambled eggs, potatoes, bacon, sausage, muffinsand plenty of coffee. More than just the standard continen-tal breakfasts that we sometimes get. Race registration wasa little crazy because we had to have two separate waivers, one for Breckenridge and one for Keystone. But eventuallyeverything got sorted out and off we went to explore theslopes of Breck. Sunday night was the welcome reception, where hungry CMSC participants finished off all the food in45 minutes. How to practice portion control is a constantissue and trip leader nightmare and this was no exception. The food was great, but only those who got there first andloaded up multiple plates got to taste it. The fund raiser forBOEC continued to grow as we started our silent auction forvarious items and Jeanne, Lori & Nancy sold more $uper$aver cards and more leis!

Monday, March 31, 2008. Today we had our races atBreckenridge. It was a little windy and we had some trou-ble with snow (fresh powder!) blowing across the finish linesensors. I had my best run ever in the first race, but didn’tget a time! So I had to go back and do the green courseagain and of course I went slower the second time! Oh well,it was a fun course and we had a great turn out. We wentover to Peak 7 in the afternoon and had a blast down all theblue cruising runs. We almost had the place to ourselvesand no lift line! Hooray for Spring skiing!

Tonight was the “Taste of Breck.” A lot of people turnedout despite the fact that is was snowing heavily.Participants got their “passport” stamped at each locationon the beer or wine tour and then turned them in at the finalstop in exchange for raffle tickets. We had quite a fewprizes and many happy winners. We also finished up thesilent auction, bringing in about $1500.00 for the BOEC. Itwas fun to see everyone wearing their light up leis and hav-ing a great time.

Tuesday, April 1, 2008. Today we skied at Vail and it wasfantastic. Some people decided to stay at Breck because ofall the new snow, and I heard skiing was great there too. Ittook the buses awhile to get to Vail due to the weather –buses and trucks had to stop to put chains on – but oncewe arrived, it was great. We dedicated this ski day to CraigMoon, former president of Ibex Ski Club, who passed awayin January. Today is Craig’s birthday and our friend andfellow skier was very much in our thoughts today. Ouraprès ski party was at Golden Peak Grille, and I don’t thinkanyone could complain there wasn’t enough food. Theyjust kept brining it out. Thanks to Viking Ski Shop forsponsoring the beer at this party. The bus ride back toBreckenridge was a lot shorter than the ride in the morning.

Wednesday, April 2, 2008. Today was a day off for somepeople who went shopping, explored the town ofBreckenridge and other activities like fly fishing. But agood many of us decided to take advantage of the greatsnow and the 6-day lift ticket and skied at Breck. Some ofthe group went over to A-Basin. Hard to believe we onlyhave two more days, it seems like we just arrived! Why dothese ski weeks go by so fast?

Thursday, April 3, 2008. Today we skied at Keystone – whata great mountain. The weather was great for our secondrace of the week and the Keystone race department did agreat job for us. After the races, we had a lunch at theSummit House at the top of the gondola. Food was great –pizza, salad and yummy cookies and brownies. Best of all, there was plenty to go around. Thanks to Angela Sheehanand the entire Keystone staff for hosting such a great party. After lunch and a couple of beers, we decided to take it easyand skied Schoolmarm all the way to the bottom where weencountered (surprise!) another bar to kick back until it wastime to go back to Breckenridge on the buses at 4:30.

Friday, April 4, 2008. Our final ski day – sigh. It’s been agreat week at Breckenridge. February-like conditions withcooler temperatures than expected and new snow through-out the week. Who could ask for more? Well, there wasone more thing – the final night bash. The evening went byin a flash, and it was a great party. The food was fantastic, our Italian Amore buffet was delicious and the food plentiful.Slide show by Mark Kinney and video by Mark Baldwin(Fort Wayne) kept us entertained as we dined. After dinner,Nancy Van Broekhoven and Mike Pogar presented a checkto BOEC. We raised over $7000.00 for this great cause!Great job everyone. Next came the presentation of the raceawards for the week, followed by dancing the night away to

the sounds of the fantastic Swing Crew. We hated for thenight to end. But all good things must end and ChicagoWeek 2008 is no exception. Tomorrow it’s back to reality.Oh well, there’s always next year!

For Chicago Week 2008, many thanks to:To Sports America, Mike Hibbard, Steve Broski, Monica, Trish and most ofall Sara Ford for being there through the entire planning process and execu-tion of the trip – we couldn’t have done it without you.

Thanks to all the club trip leaders: Chicago Friars Lynn Newton, HustlersScott Schmid & Debbie Fanta, Ibex Lou DiFrancisco, Sitzmark Lori Kushar &Jeanne Leone, Nomads Dorothy Tokarczyk, Fort Wayne Linda & DaveBillian, Inland Linda Bennett, Fleetwind Bill Gleason, SchussboomersDarlene Kelly, Omaha Teri Hammon and Wild Bunch Mary Kreinbring.

Thanks to Vail Resorts Mike Agnew, Brian Davis & Jessie Paige(Breckenridge), Angela Sheehan (Keystone) and to the Breckenridge andKeystone Race Departments. Thanks also to Heidi DeWitt fromBreckenridge Lodging & Hospitality and to Emily Koppa from Beaver Runfor helping us plan and execute the successful events.

Thanks also to Nancy Van Broekhoven, Lori Kushar and Jeanne Leone fordoing such a fantastic job on the Taste of Breckenridge and charityfundraiser for the BOEC. Also to all the establishments that participatedand to CMSC and Mathieu’s Fine Watches & Jewelry, Vail Resorts, SportsAmerica and Beaver Run, all who donated prizes for the silent auction. Thanks also to the Breckenridge local contingent Jerry Stein and JohnKuhn who helped tremendously.

Thanks to Dick Goodwin and Sunnie Heddon and the entire Fort WayneSki Club for helping run the races and tabulate the results.

And last, but not least a big thank you to all the participants of ChicagoWeek 2008 for joining us and supporting the trip. Hope you all had a greattime and will join us for Chicago Week 2009 in Lake Tahoe!

Located approximately half way between Innsbruck andSt. Anton, high in the mountains of the Ötztal Valley, thelongest side valley off the main Inn Valley, you will findSölden. Highly favored by the Europeans, but largelyunknown by Americans, Sölden is Austria’s largestdeveloped area of glacier skiing.

With reliable snow cover, two glaciers, three peaks above10,000 feet and 60% snowmaking, good skiing is guar-anteed. It is a big resort with a vertical drop of over6,000 feet. You’ll find an extensive network of slopes forthe adventuresome intermediate, plus numerous slopesfor the beginner and expert (not the same slopes). Also,we intend to ski one day at the neighboring ski resort ofObergurgl/Hochgurgl just up the valley.

There are numerous mountain huts for lunches andbreaks for morning coffee and afternoon tea, all in mag-nificent settings.

For the non-skier, or those who wish to take some daysoff from skiing for sightseeing, Innsbruck is a shorttransfer and train ride away. Options for these side trips

include a visit to the old mountaineering village of Ventor hot thermal spa at Langenfeld.

Sölden is also famous for its après ski parties andnightlife. However, this is just one of the many reasons togo on CMSC’s European Trip this year. Here are a fewmore reasons:

Two ski resorts, Sölden and Obergurgl/Hochgurgl inone ski trip.

High elevation and 60% of slopes with snowmakingequipment guarantee snow.

The “Big 3.” (You’ll have to go to know!) The “Big 3 Rallye.” (Ditto!) The mountain huts. The après ski. The nightlife. (If you can handle it!) Night skiing. (Ditto!) The Rodelbahn. (What’s a Rodel?) Most people have never heard of Sölden and nobodyyou know has ever been there!

MMaybe I'm just getting evil. Maybe I'm just gettingmean. I lose my temper faster than I used to. I find ithard to put up with people who require a vast amount ofhand-holding. I keep blaming it on not having enoughtime in my life. My friends blame it on me not takingany time for myself. Maybe I just need a darn goodvacation with my friends, my friends from my ski club!

Who else will ignore the fact that you seem a little weirderthan usual? (Oh yeah, right... Nettie just a LITTLE weird-er?) Who else will put up with you spinning out of controlat what seems a million miles an hour? Who will give youthat huge reality check when you need it? Who will knock

you into shape when you let yourself go? Who will giveyou that big huge hug when you need it? Only your skiclub will do that for you!

I've spent a better part of my life as a member of oneski club or another. I've always loved being a memberof a ski club. Joining a ski club is like suddenly having ahuge group of friends to do fun stuff with. You want togo to the theater? You want to go scuba diving? Youwant to go sailing? Just want to go out for a good glassof wine? Just pick up your ski club directory and callone of your many friends. There is always someone upfor a good time.

The best part about it is that you have somuch in common with everyone in yourski club. You all like snow. Even themembers that don't ski or snowboardstill love the time together. As mostskiers and snowboarders are very activepeople, you have many other things incommon year-round. Biking, hiking, swimming and fishing. Volleyball, tennis, football and baseball. Art, fashion, the-ater, even ballroom dancing. If it's fun todo, someone in the ski club is doing it.

Ski clubs are also great places to learnnew things. If you are a skier and wantto learn to snowboard, what better placeto learn than from your club's instruc-tors? But are you limited to only learn-ing about ski-related activities? No! Ilearned how to rock climb on a week-end trip with Skunk Hollow Ski andSnowboard Club. I learned how to scubadive with the Aqua Adventurers. Peoplein ski clubs are always up for learningsomething new and exciting.

So why not join a ski club? Join to learnsomething new. Join to make friends.Join to have fun. Just join and watchyour life change.
