DRA (Diagnostic Reading Assessment)

DRA is a reading assessment given to students in grades 1-5.

Students in grades 3-5 read part of the story orally. They write a summary, answer literal questions, tell about the author’s message and the most important part of the story. This assessment is used by teachers to help guide their reading instruction.

One to the World (OTTW)

“One to the World” is a Loudoun County school wide initiative taking content we already teach and helping students make connections outside of the classroom to answer questions and solve problems creatively.

Grading

There are four grading periods, each is nine weeks long.

Fifth graders receive letter grades (A – F) on their report cards.

Any papers with a number (1-4) will count towards your child’s grade in that subject. (Summative grades)

Any papers marked with a check mark (check plus, check minus, etc.) are averaged together and count as one grade for that subject. (Formative grades)

All work is important and needs to be completed correctly and on time!

Helping your child at home

Have your child read EVERYDAY and model good reading in your home by reading with him/her and discussing good books. Remember: “All reading is good reading!”

Practice multiplication and division facts through “12.”

Have your child practice writing by keeping a daily journal of the day’s events.

the end of the school day. ◦Please make sure you send the correct quantity - how sad

for someone if there isn’t enough!

We must learn to live together like brothers or perish together like fools.~Martin Luther King, Jr.

We are looking forward to a productive year of learning with your child and we are excited about the discoveries that we will make.
