OUR PARISH/SCHOOL CONTINUED..
ATHLETIC BOOSTERSThe DSJ Athletic Boosters were started many years ago and we've held our business meetings on Thursday nights for almost as many years. But over the years, Thursday night became the home of many of our Blue Jay sports, making it impossible for parents of those athletes to attend our meetings. Well, not any more!!!
The DSJ Athletic Boosters will start a new era. We're moving our monthly business meeting to Monday!! Join us as we chart the course for the Athletic Boosters and our support of Blue Jay sports. We'll be delighted to see a lot of new faces who were unable to join us before.
We'll meet in the Little Theater at 7:00 p.m. on the third Monday of the month from August to May. For now, masks and social distancing are required.
CEMETERY CLEANUPCleanup has begun at St. John the Evangelist and Resurrection cemeteries. If you have any summer flowers or other items that you would like to keep that you have placed at a loved one’s grave, please be sure to pick them up before October 15. If you have friends or relatives who do not live in town, but have a loved one at our cemeteries, please mention it to them so they are aware of the deadline.
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,It has been just around a month since I began my time here for my pastoral internship year and want to thank you for your warm welcome and support you have shown me already! As part of my time here, one of the things I would like to do is provide all of you with a brief reflection each month over the Gospel for a particular Sunday. As a result, I would like to reflect on this weekend’s Gospel for the 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time which comes from Matthew 21:28-32.
In the Gospel, we hear the parable of the two sons being shared with the chief priests and elders. In it, we hear a contrast in both the words and actions by the two sons. The first son says to his father that he won’t go work on taking care of the vineyard, but he ends up going to do the work. His words first showed disobedience, but his action afterwards showed obedience to his father. The second son says that he will go work on the vineyard, but he ends up not working at all. His words showed obedience, but his action showed disobedience to his father. It is determined that the first son truly did his father’s will by actually going to work. In addition, Jesus goes on to tell the chief priests and elders that tax collectors and prostitutes will enter the kingdom of God before them. How could that be the case? How could people that are living lives of great sinfulness of greed and lust be ahead of the chief priests and elders? The answer rests in the conversion that took place in their minds and hearts; a change in their will and intellect that has led them to turn to Christ. The tax collectors and prostitutes came to follow and believe Jesus. St. Matthew was once a tax collector himself. However, he would go on to have a change of mind and heart and would go on to follow our Lord and be one of His apostles. The chief priests and elders on the other hand do not change their minds nor follow Jesus.
Based on this Gospel that we hear this weekend, a question to ask ourselves is whether or not we are allowing ourselves to have our minds and hearts be transformed by Christ? Is Christ the one that we are truly following, or are we following a path that whatever we personally believe to be right is actually best? Do our words and actions each day bring us to a closer relationship with our Lord, or do they lead us further away from Him and fall into greater sinfulness? Just as the one son went on to be obedient to his father, we, too, are all called to be obedient to God throughout life. Doing so is part of who we are and what we believe, and we know this because we pray about it every time in the Our Father when we say, “thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” We are God’s creatures, His children, and as such, we have been specially created to be obedient towards Him, to follow His will for our lives, and to have a relationship with Him. God didn’t create us because He needed us, but rather He created us out of love and we need Him.
Following God’s will throughout life is not always an easy thing to do, as we are human beings and are susceptible to falling into sin. However, it is us sinners who the Lord comes to and wants us to have a change in mind and heart. Our Lord will help us, but we must freely allow ourselves to trust in Him and that requires a change of mind and heart. We will have our times of failures and difficulties in life, but when we allow our minds and hearts to follow God’s will rather than solely our own, we will then grow in our relationship with Him and lead to greater holiness. May we each take a little time each day to reflect on our own lives, humbly acknowledge our weaknesses and failures, and allow ourselves to open our hearts and minds even more to Christ than what they may be. Our lives are a continuous spiritual journey and what an amazing journey it is when we follow God’s will and keep Christ close! It is truly a joy and a blessing to be here with all of you this year!
In Christ,Seminarian Brad McNeal

We are overjoyed to be able to celebrate this Mass with the married couples of our diocese, especially during this challenging time. May God continue to bless us with strong and holy marriages, and to build up His Church through the vocation of married love.
ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST CHURCH DELPHOS, OHIO
Since participation in political life is a moral obligation, Catholics need to form their conscience with the mind and heart of the Church on issues of consequence. This outline is the fourth of eight, which will examine important moral and political issues. This fourth outline will provide an overview of the issue of religious freedom.
Religious Freedom
Catholics in America have long enjoyed the fact that in the Bill of Rights, religious liberty, with its rights of conscience, is the first freedom that is protected in our Constitution. Yet today, religious freedom, even in the United States, is consistently being challenged. As Archbishop Thomas G. Wenski of Miami, the acting chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee for Religious Liberty has pointed out:
Religious freedom is under stress throughout the world. Even in our Western liberal democracies, discrimination against religion in general and Catholic Christianity, in particular, is growing… “Yet, just as freedom of speech depends not only on one’s right to say what’s on one’s mind but also on the existence of institutions like newspapers, universities, libraries, political parties and other associations that make up what we call ‘civil society,’ so too freedom of religion ‘for the good of all’ must also encompass protecting those institutions that nourish the individual’s free exercise of religion. (Archbishop Thomas G. Wenski of Miami, http://www.usccb.org/news/20-100.cfm)
We can see this stress and hostility towards religion from cases against the Little Sisters of the Poor to faith-based adoption agencies, the accreditation of religious educational institutions, the grants and contracts of faith-based charities and small businesses, and the licensing of religious professions. Our cherished religious liberties are now at stake by our political choices. As the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has written:
In the United States, religious freedom generally enjoys strong protection in our law and culture, but those protections are now in doubt. For example, the longstanding tax exemption of the Church has been explicitly called into question at the highest levels of government, precisely because of her teachings on marriage. Catholics have a particular duty to make sure that protections like these do not weaken but instead grow in strength. This is not only to secure the just freedom of the Church and the faithful here but also to offer hope and an encouraging witness to those who suffer direct and even violent religious persecution in countries where the protection is far weaker. (The Challenge of Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, P. 30)
It is imperative then as Catholics that we defend religious liberty and the rights of conscience in our political choices. For religious liberty has its foundation in the dignity of the human person. As Archbishop Thomas G. Wenski of Miami points out:
The right to religious freedom has its foundation in the very dignity of the human person. Religious freedom is the human right that guarantees all other rights — peace and creative living together will only be possible if freedom of religion is fully respected. (http://www.usccb.org/news/20-100.cfm)
In summation, it is the duty of every Catholic to fight for religious liberty to ensure not only the right of conscience in the workplace, but so that families, Churches, and peoples of all faiths can work in accordance with their religious beliefs while they care for the common good, the poor and vulnerable, and God’s creation.
