The BasicsWhat will MY student be learning in this class?

As we explore multiple time periods in United State's History, your child will learn about great wars, famous figures, momentous happenings, politics, and current events. I hope to help each and every one of my students learn about the importance of studying history. I hope to challenge them to think beyond their "comfort" level, to make connections between the past and present. I hope they will use everything they learn in my class to help them establish their OWN personal ideologies and positions on history and political world events.  To me, its not about how much they learn in a 45 minute class period, but rather, their ability to critically think about a subject to gain a unique understanding that no text book could ever offer them alone.

your students as a mutli-purposeful learning experience. One major 21st century technological skill that will be

For a better understanding...

Page 8: Welcome To Back To School Night

Example Activity: Part 1:Students will be given a history based research topic where they need to resolve a problem. The problem that needs to be solved will be offered in an open-ended question so that students can produce multiple answers and learn through multiple sources. Students will be given the freedom to make their paper topic general or very specific. The format of the paper (such as compare/contrast, informational, etc.) would be based on what type of information each student finds during their research.  One example of a research topic  would be, “Pretend you are a member of the jury for the Brown versus Board Supreme Court  Case. Explain the case. What are you hearing? On what information will you base your decision? What will you decide? What would you recommend is the next best course of action. ”

Page 9: Welcome To Back To School Night

Example Activity: Part 2:

Students will be expected to back their opinions and facts with research. They will be required to explore multiple websites and be asked to use a variety of websites and web-applications such as “add-ons” and “news sources” and “social networking sites” to determine their trustworthiness and dependability. After collecting their information, drawing conclusions, and formulating a paper, they will discuss their ideas in a class discussion/debate. This will give them an opportunity to bounce ideas off each other and learn from one other.

Teaching others= 90% Learning!
