Grammar, Writing, & Shurley English.

• GA Writing test in March.

• Memorizing Shurley jingles• Using “Write to Learn” online

writing program• Typing essays in Word 2007• You can go online to Microsoft office & download

a free compatibility pack to 2003 so your child can finish typing essays at home in Word 2007.

• Your child will need a jump drive to save their projects. (1 G is good)

• Learning the 8 parts of speech and how to locate them in sentences & apply them in your writing.

• Informative/Expository, Descriptive, Narrative, & Persuasive types of writing genres.

• History: students will cover Civil War to present day.

• Government/Civics: Students will explore citizenship and the US Constitution ,focusing on the changes that took place due to historical events

• Geography: Students will study location to better understand historical events.

• Economy: students will cover economics to illustrate historical events.

• Social Studies Fair– The Social Studies Fair will

be coming up in October. There will be grades given to students based on the Social Science fair booklet handed out in October and for the research paper. The project board will be done at home only.

Reading• Method to determine your grades:

• Reading will include some stories out of the Reading Street textbook, class and group novels, poetry, and articles etc.

• Genres include fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

• A.R.-students will need to earn 10 points each month for AR. AR is not counted for a grade this year, but students will have the opportunity to earn bookmark charms. Students should be reading a minimum of 30 minutes.

• Students are given a vocabulary warm-up sheet on Monday. As a class, we make corrections every day. Then the students are required to turn-in the sheet on Friday for a participation grade.

• On Fridays, we have a short Spiral Reading Quiz that assess the students on concepts taught up to that date.

• Fauxcabulary Fridays! After the Spiral Quiz is over, we play vocabulary games to increase the students vocabulary.

• To ensure differentiation, many math classes will consist of math centers.

• Students will take a spiral quiz on most Fridays (Thursdays for AIM students). The quiz will be a review of the material covered this year in 5th grade as well as a spiral review of 4th concepts.

• If your child needs help with ANY math concept, please encourage him or her to come see me in the mornings during homeroom. This includes help with homework!

Special Times of the Day

Art Music P.E. Counselor Media Center

• Special classes are last period from 1:15 – 2:00• AIM days once per week on Wednesdays for the

Green Team• Lunch: 12:20- 1:50 for my homeroom

MediaCheckout can be done from 8:00-8:30, during Recess, or during Media time. Students will not be able to go at any other time because we no longer have a media clerk. Thank you for your understanding, and helping your child to go at the appropriate times.

Breaks & RecessAt snack time the students are allowed to use the bathroom, eat snack, & get a drink of water. Only water bottles allowed. Outside recess will be held daily for 15 minutes if weather permits, if not we will have indoor recess time.Bathroom breaks are encouraged between classes when we are switching in the hallway.We do allow 3 emergency passes during classes per week. If a student has a medical problem and needs to go more, please send a written note.

Grading System

• A = 90 - 100• B = 80 - 89• C = 71 -79• D = 70• F = 69 and below• We take off 10 points per day for late assignments,

after 3 days we don’t accept work unless completed in Study Hall for a grade of 50%.

Honor Roll & Merit List

• Honor Rolls• Students may qualify for either of two

honor rolls:• 1.  Principal's Honor Roll is 90 or better in

all academic subjects. • 2. Merit Roll: is an 80 or better in all

• Elementary School student breakfast = $1.00• Elementary School student lunch = $1.65• Milk = .40 cents• Use www.mealpayplus.com to pay online for

your lunches. It also notifies you by email when your child runs low on lunch money!

• Ice cream sold on Fridays for .50 cents

Important Information• Agendas should be completed by the student in each class, and

signed nightly by the parent.

• One day per day absent is allowed for make-up work per CCSD blue handbook.

• Be prepared for class…paper, pencil, agenda, text & class/homework.

After School Program (ASP)• For students staying after school it is $6.00 per

day. You may pay by the week or by the day. Please turn in money during homeroom or before 9am. If after 10am, you must pay $12.00.

•   Make check payable to Avery ES and earmark it for ASP. Put in yellow envelope if possible. Be sure to write which days you will be sending your child.  You MUST pick your child up by 6pm SHARP!

Dress Code per CCSD guidelines• Pants & Shorts must be 5" from the top of the kneecaps. 

Use a 3 X 5 index card to measure. • Skirts & Dresses must be 3" from the top of the knee caps.• Shirts & Blouses must have no writing, graphics, or

pictures that unreasonably attract the attention of other students or cause disruption or interference with the operation of the school. Shirttails must be below the belt line even with arms raised above the head or when the student is seated.  No tank tops, halter tops, nor spaghetti straps allowed.

• Undergarments: must be appropriate and worn at all times.

Buses

• Students will not be permitted to ride a bus other than their own to another student's home.  Exceptions will be considered if a written request is made by parents of the both students & if space is available on the bus involved. A note must be brought by both students at the beginning of the school day for approval.   **Note:  the same policy applies to students wanting to walk or ride the home with someone else. No emails or faxes please!

Medication• Students who need to take medication while at school

should leave the medication with the office or clinic with a form as soon as they arrive at school.  Permission letters from parents/guardians, doctor's dosages, and times for administering are to accompany all medication.  It should be in the original container also.  No student will be allowed to take any medication without a note.  All medication, prescription or Over The Counter (OTC) drugs are to be registered at the clinic upon arriving at school.

• You will need a Medication Authorization Form• You can obtain this form from my website or CCSD site.

National Jr. Beta ClubThe Beta Club will start after 1st report cards go out.

Sponsors look at the 1st 9 weeks to see who is qualified for the Jr. Beta Club. Invitations will be sent home in October with report cards.

You must have all A’s or only 1 B in core subjects for 4th & 5th grade. Also outstanding behavior & moral conduct. Plus must pay dues for membership.

Conference sign upsPlease see sign up sheets to sign up for your 20 minute Fall conference. We request that we meet with all parent(s) at least 1 time per semester. Students are encouraged to attend also. Sign up sheet located on desk outside of classroom. If you’ve already met with us, you do not have to meet again.
