ALLITERATION

•Definition: The repetition of initial constant sounds.

• Example:– “Rain reigns roughly through the day.

Raging anger from the skyPartners prattle of tormented tearsFrom clouds wondering whyLightning tears their souls apart.”

METAPHOR• Definition: A

comparison between two objects with the intent of giving clearer meaning to one of them (does not use like or as).

• Example: – “Sunshine, hope

– Clouds are ships in full sailRacing across the sky-blue sea.”

HYPERBOLE• Definition: Exaggeration for dramatic

effect.

SIMILE•Definition: A comparison between two objects using a word or comparison such as “like” or “as”.

PERSONIFICATION• Definition: A figure of speech which

describes animals, ideas, or inanimate objects with human traits or abilities.

• Example: – “Love smiled on him. Love walked right in and stole the

shadows away. The sea that bares her bosom to the

moon.

IMAGERY• Definition: Words or phrases that appeal

to any sense or any combination of senses.

• Examples: – “Drip of ruby teardrops
