Principal’s news Welcome to the 2020 School Year! This year we warmly welcome 14 new Reception students and their families to AAS: Ava, Izaiah, Hunter, Cooper, Eli, Wyatt, Finn, Aiesha, Summer, Indie, Cameron, Noah, Levi and Conner. The students were very excited on Tuesday morning and have all made a great start! We also welcome our new teaching staff: Ms Emily Cook (English, HASS, Food & Hospitality and Home Economics), Ms Liese Gordon (Music) and Mr Michael Fallon; contract for 7 weeks whilst Mr Stephen Herreen is on leave (Mathematics and Workplace Practices); Mrs Kylie Cook (English) and Ms Aimee Nixon (Year 5/6, Science and FFL) who have both returned following leave. As has been mentioned previously, in 2020 we will be implementing some key initiatives which are firmly founded on our Purpose, Vision and Values. All Year 7-9 students will be involved in the Future Focussed Learning (FFL) program. This program is based on the HASS curriculum area; with a focus on developing critical and creative thinking through authentic learning opportunities. All Year 10 students will be undertaking Stage 1 Business Innovation (Shark Tank). We will be working with Yorketown Area School and the University of Adelaide on this very exciting initiative which focuses on developing entrepreneurial skills. We also have the Environmental Sustainability initiative (aquaponics system, garden area and chicken coop) which will be part of our Science Curriculum. This initiative provides the opportunity for our students from Reception to Year 10 to be involved. Our key Literacy and Numeracy improvement areas for 2020 are:
1. Through the proficiencies, increase student understanding of Number and Algebra in Reception to Year 10.
2. Increase reading comprehension for all Reception to Year 10 students. During morning home group this week, students have been working on setting individual literacy and numeracy goals for term 1. We will continue to publish the newsletter four times per term. For term 1 this will be on Weeks 1, 4, 7 and 11 (29/01/20, 19/02/20, 11/03/20 and 08/04/20). We would like to encourage families to receive an email version of the newsletter. If you are happy to receive the newsletter via email please advise us at [email protected]. In addition to the newsletter, information and photographs will regularly be posted on our Facebook page and on our school website. Information regarding upcoming events will also be provided through the Home Books (R-2) and Diaries (3-12). I would like to extend an invitation to all students, families and community members to the following events: AAS 2020 Welcome Night - Tuesday 4th February.

Leader’s News Deputy Principal
Our Year 12’s from 2019 have achieved success in a variety of forms since graduating from Ardrossan Area School: one student successfully achieved the required ATAR and was accepted into their first choice university course, one student achieved the required ATAR for their first preference course and is taking a gap year, one student is continuing their apprenticeship in locksmithing, one is commencing an apprenticeship and three students have moved into employment. These achievements are not only a testament to the commitment of the students themselves but of teaching staff who supported them to achieve these outcomes. We look forward to supporting our current Year 12 students: Tahneesha Badari, Nicholas Dayman, Gandi Ahmed-Owen, Rebecca
Haynes, Brodie Hellmans, Sara Hillier, Daniel Holdsworth, Courtney Lodge, Caitlin McDougall, Akala Meredith, Callum Simmie, Jasmine Smith, Bradley Stone and Jemma Torsney to achieve their personal, educational, tertiary and vocational goals in 2020.These students will be supported in their goal setting, progress and achievement with 1:1 meetings held with Margaret Roads at the commencement of each term, and regular check-ins from subject teachers and their Home Group teachers Cherie Beech and Amy East. One exciting initiative in 2020 has been the introduction of Stage 1 Business Innovation, delivering the the Shark Tank eSchool model run and endorsed by Adelaide University. The program is being delivered in conjunction with Yorketown Area School and educators from both sites have been working with staff from the University of Adelaide on the programs implementation and delivery. This is a very exciting opportunity for our Year 10 students with the Shark Tank eSchool program recently winning the Higher Education for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Support of the Year at the Triple E Awards against 300 other universities program submissions. Our students commenced the program today and we look forward to hearing about all of their innovations and solutions as the program progresses in Semester 1. We are continuing the delivery of the Certificate II in Engineering Pathways by TAFE lecturer Kym Cox this year. We have three Year 12 students who will be completing this qualification this year as well as a number of Year 10 and Year 11 students who will be commencing the certificate. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to complete a certificate qualification whilst still undertaking school and is open to all students aged over 16 (at the commencement of the semester). If there are any students or parents/caregivers who wish to know more about this certificate, please contact me for some more information. In addition to the Certificate II in Engineering Pathways we also have a number of students commencing school based apprenticeships in carpentry and electrical, students continuing their Certificate III qualification in Aged Care and one student undertaking a Certificate II in Automotive. We wish these students all the best for their chosen vocational pathways. I encourage parents and caregivers to contact class teachers or myself ([email protected] or 88373025) to discuss how our school can meet your child’s individual educational goals, needs or employment pathways. I look forward to a very productive and exciting 2020 school year and I hope to see students’ parents and caregivers at our 2020 Welcome Night on Tuesday 4th of February from 4.45pm to 6.15pm. If you are willing to help, can you please give your name to the front office staff 88373025 or email [email protected] so I can ensure that all jobs required are filled prior to the event. Kind regards, Bradley Channon
Where are they now?
Our first 'Where are they now?' is Georgia Kuhndt - Class of 2017 Georgia is currently in her final year of a Bachelor of Nursing at The University of Adelaide. Did you always plan this pathway? Nursing has always interested me from a young age. In my final few years of school after some experience at the Ardrossan Dinham Wing I was 100% sure this was the career I wanted to pursue. What are you career plans after completing University? I will begin to apply for Graduate positions for 2021 in the middle of this year. I plan to stay in Adelaide for a few years to gain as much experience as possible so it would be great to work at a bigger metro hospital. A comment reflecting on your time at AAS? I am so grateful for the support I had at AAS, especially during my final years of schooling. I was pushed to do my absolute best by all of the staff and my peers around me and I strongly believe that is the reason I was accepted into my course. Advice to current students: If I can give the current students any advice it is to work hard and enjoy your years in school. If you know what you want to do after school, consider what subjects are the most relevant.
