The Sermon on the Mount–Part 2Matthew 5:1-10

Last message we learned…

1. The CONGREGATION of the sermon of the mount was primarily Christ’s disciples (5:1)

2. The CONTEXT of the sermon on the mount was “the gospel of the kingdom (4:23; 5:3, 10, 19, 20; 7:21).

3. There are CONFLICTS in the sermon on the mount when compared to the ministry of the Apostle Paul.

I. The BEATITUDES. Attributes of the citizens of the kingdomA. The “poor in spirit” (5:3; Ps. 34:18; Isa. 65:17–66:2).

B. They that “mourn” (5:4 cf Mt. 24:30; Zech. 12:10-12; Isa. 51:11; Jer. 31:13; Isa. 61:1-3).

C. “The meek” (5:5 cf. Zeph. 2:1-3; Ps. 37:3, 9-11, 22, 29, 34). D. The hungering for righteousness (5:6 cf. Ps. 9; Prov. 25:5; Isa.

26:9; 32:1; Jer. 23:5-6; 33:14-16; Zeph. 2:3; Acts 17:31; Heb. 1:8; Rev. 19:11).

E. “The merciful” (5:7 cf. Zech. 7:9; cf. Mt. 10:42; Luke 10:37).

F. “The pure in heart” (5:8 cf. Ps. 24:3-4, 7-10; Ezek. 36:24-33).

G. “The peacemakers” (5:9). The kingdom will be characterized by peace (Isa. 2:4; 9:7; Mt. 10:5-7, 11-13; Isa. 52:7; Nah. 1:15 cf. Acts 10:36-37).

H. They that suffer persecution for righteousness (5:10 cf. Mt. 24:9, 13; Rev. 2:10; 6:9; 13:7; 20:4).

II. The LORD’S PRAYER (6:7-15).A. Not time for the kingdom to come (v. 10 cf. Lk. 17:20,21; Mt.

3:2; 4:17). B. Praying for daily bread will be essential in the tribulation period

when there will be widespread famines and the Jews will be forced to live in the wilderness (Mt. 24:16-18; Rev. 12:13-14).

C. The basis of forgiveness (vs. 12, 14, 15 cf. Eph. 4:32).

D. No one has to ask God not to lead them into temptation (v. 13).

From the Preacher…“The First Day of the Week”

Do you know why we come together as a church on “the first day of the week,” and not Saturday? It is not because of a decree made by some church council or Catholic Pope. We meet on Sunday simply because that was the day Jesus arose from the grave (Mt. 28:1). From that day onward it was practice of the early church to assemble on “the first day of the week” to celebrate Christ’s resurrection (Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 16:1-2). It is only fitting that God deserves the first-fruits of everything in our lives (Prov. 3:9). The first 10% of our income… The first portion of our day… The first day of our week—Sunday! Next Sunday is Easter—Resurrection Day! Our choir will be singing a special Easter musical entitled “The Night Before Easter.” I will bring a brief sermon about the stone that sealed Jesus’ tomb. Hallelujah, no stone could keep our living Savior in the grave! Special Easter invitation cards are available on the information table in the foyer for you to use to invite someone to come to our Easter service.

Let’s pray and work to get some lost people here next Sunday!
