In the morning, take a drive to the Huka Falls Lookout, and see the phenomenon of natural hydro power. In the afternoon, leave for Rotoua (81km, 1 hr), but before you arrive, stop 30 minutes south of Rotorua, to visit the Waiotapu Thermal Reserve.

The drive to Taupo will take around 4hrs45. After reaching Taupo, enjoy a picturesque lunch or dinner on the shores of Lake Taupo and, if you like, try your luck at the Hole-in One driving range on the Lakefront.

After 24 hours enjoying the beautiful Bay of Plenty, head south to Napier, Hawke’s Bay

(291km, 3hrs40). Visit the traditional farmers market in Hastings, for the freshest produce and

organic foods or try an orchard, farm, honey, cheese or chocolate tour. Self-tour the region with a food and wine

trail map, or cycle from one winery to the next on one of the three Hawke’s Bay Trails.

On your first day of in New Zealand, why not take some time to explore this vibrant city. The best way to do this is by making use of the Auckland Explorer Bus. The bus stops at the major attractions, such as Auckland Museum, Parnell Village, the Sky Tower and Victoria Park Market.

Then pick up your Britz or Maui campervan for your self-drive tour.

Leave Auckland and head to the Bay of Plenty (223km, 3hrs). The area is home to some of New Zealand’s most stunning beaches and New Zealand’s only active

marine volcano. Take a tour around a working kiwifruit orchard with Kiwi 360,

learn about the region’s history at the Elms Mission House and boasting the sunniest

climate in the North Island, the Bay of Plenty is a great place to enjoy the outdoors year-round.

Head to the Lions Supporter Village to get into the rugby spirit with fellow Lions fans! Then descend on Westpac Stadium for the Second Test: New Zealand v British & Irish Lions.

Spend the morning enjoying everything Hawke’s Bay has to offer and then in the afternoon, get on the road and head south to Wellington (315km, 4hrs20). Spend the

evening in Wellington lapping up the Lions atmosphere in what Lonely Planet calls “the

coolest little capital in with world”.

Spend the whole day in Rotorua. At Whakarewarewa, see how the people living there use the natural geothermal wonders for cooking, bathing and everyday living and in the

depths of the forest, take a journey back in time at a Maori village.

The Glowworm Caves are a must see, either by a boat or a walking tour. The driver enjoys free entry to the caves so make the most of this! Once you’ve visited the caves, take the walkway beginning near the Waitomo Museum of Caves, which leads through farmland where you’ll see fascinating rock forms and strange fluted outcrops.

Head north to Hamilton Waikato (106km, 1hr25), a land of lush pastures that was

chosen to play The Shire in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films. If you’re

a Tolkien fan, drive east to Matamata and visit Hobbiton Movie Set. Or if you fancy exploring Hamilton itself, head to

Casabella Lane for unique New Zealand-made items and boutique stores.

Once you’ve taken in this beautiful region, head back to Auckland (200km 1hr45) to revel in the atmosphere before the Third Test: New Zealand v The British & Irish Lions.

Rotorua is home to The New Zealand Sports Academy. It provides first-class Maori rugby coaching for young rugby union and league players. Ex Maori All Black Jim Love coaches at the academy.

Warren Gatland, the head coach of the Lions, is a Hamilton ex-pat who attended Hamilton Boys’ High School.

Visit Waitangi Treaty Grounds where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840, establishing New Zealand as a

nation of the British Empire. Whilst at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds Visitors Centre, catch an authentic kapa haka performance. Drive south to Whangarei (71km, 1hr) to split up the journey back to Auckland

and head to Whangarei Falls, the ‘most photogenic waterfall in New Zealand’.

Head back to Auckland (158km, 2hrs25 from Whangarei). Take the campervan back to the drop off point before heading to the airport for your flight home.

After the thrills of the Third Test the day before, head north, for Paihia (240 km, 3hrs30). Discover this scenic part of the Bay of Islands with the Excitor, an amphibious vessel that takes you from Paihia to Cape Brett and the Cathedral Cave.
