What’s up in Math?

Page 13: Welcome Parents Our goal is to assist our students in learning as much as possible

To help “our” students learn as much as possible:

• They must “master” their basic facts this year.

• “Mastery” of the basic facts simplifies every aspect of mathematics from this point forward for all students.

Page 14: Welcome Parents Our goal is to assist our students in learning as much as possible

Which brings us to “Mental Math”

• Most of “our” students’ homework this year will involve their mental math drills.

• These are typically due at the beginning of the week, and will provide students with one of their weekly grades. (See BLUE SHEET)

• Mental Math Quizzes are designed to measure improvement in both speed and accuracy.

Page 15: Welcome Parents Our goal is to assist our students in learning as much as possible

Mental Math - (Continued)

• Accuracy should not be sacrificed for the sake of speed.

• However, speed is the only way to check of “mastery” of the basic facts.

• Thus, improvement is measured in time (minutes and seconds).

This is where you come in…

• Please make sure students are practicing at home, and please sign their “blue sheet” to verify this for us each week.

• Each operation should be practiced at least twice a week. Your signature verifies these practice times are accurate.

problems?

• Can students do these math problems?

Georgia Performance Standards

• Applying math to solve problems

(a lot of application)

Quality Core Curriculum• Solving math problems

(a lot of repetition)
