Literary Comprehension(40% of CRCT)

• Literary Comprehension refers to the skills required to comprehend and explore literary works by identifying and analyzing elements of various texts.

• Texts may include: short stories, dramas, folktales, poetry, fables, and descriptive narratives.

• Understand and make judgments about setting, characterization, plot, and conflict

• Relate to information about its historical or cultural setting

• Determine meaning in prose and poetry…personification, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, refrain • Interpret the author’s use of dialogue and

Information and Media Literacy

(40% of CRCT) • Information and Media Literacy refers to

the skills required to read, recall, and analyze details and information from various texts.

• Texts may include: informational essays, articles, subject-area texts, biographies, book/film reviews, encyclopedia entries, diary entries, and reference sources.

• Understand and apply knowledge of common textual features, such as: paragraphs, topic sentences,concluding sentences, glossary

• Summarize main idea and supporting details • Use knowledge of common organizational structures,

such as: chronological and logical order, cause and effect, classification schemes

Reading Skills and Vocabulary Acquisition

• Reading Skills and Vocabulary Acquisition refers to the skills required to read, interpret, and apply difficult text and new vocabulary in a variety of texts.

Skills for Reading and Vocabulary Acquisition

• Understand and determine the meaning of unfamiliar words by using context clues, such as: definition, example

• When reading words with multiple meanings able to determine which meaning is intended from the context of the sentence

• Relate the meaning of unfamiliar words using knowledge of: common roots, suffixes, prefixes

• Knows and understands prefixes, suffixes, antonym, synonym, and homophones

What’s up in Math?

To help “our” students learn as much as possible:

• They must “master” their basic facts this year.

• “Mastery” of the basic facts simplifies every aspect of mathematics from this point forward for all students.

Which brings us to “Mental Math”

• Most of “our” students’ homework this year will involve their mental math drills.

• These are typically due at the beginning of the week, and will provide students with one of their weekly grades. (See BLUE SHEET)

• Mental Math Quizzes are designed to measure improvement in both speed and accuracy.

• Accuracy should not be sacrificed for the sake of speed.

• However, speed is the only way to check of “mastery” of the basic facts.

• Thus, improvement is measured in time (minutes and seconds).

This is where you come in…

• Please make sure students are practicing at home, and please sign their “blue sheet” to verify this for us each week.

• Each operation should be practiced at least twice a week. Your signature verifies these practice times are accurate.
