Project managers must now become experts in stakeholder relations management where topics such as politics, culture, religion, virtual teams, and managing resources with questionable capabilities take on paramount importance. Learn why it has taken several decades for executives to become convinced that project management can and does work well. Discuss how executives have begun delegating more authority to project managers with regard to both project and business decision-making, and have recognized the application of project management to more long-term, complex projects that require the use of virtual teams.
project management For it & Ba’sproject management For it & Ba’sFebruary 7-8 9 am – 4 pm; 12 PDU – 10.5 (T), 1 (L), .5 (S/B); $995 Instructor: Amanda Dietz
Good project management is an important part of general business management; for information technology projects, it is critical. neW! perFormance coaching & management - Driving empLoYee groWthFebruary 16 9 am – 4 pm; 6 PDU – 6 (L); $449 Instructor: Leslie Hunt
If employees truly are a company’s greatest asset, then why do most companies do such a poor job managing the performance of these valuable resources? The answers to this question include: (1) The company does not have a performance management system in place, and (2) Employees and managers do not see the value in using the performance management system or do not understand how to use the system effectively. This course will provide participants with an overview of the performance management system and all the processes involved. Participants will have the opportunity to use best practices and helpful templates in a variety of real-world scenarios for each of the key performance management processes.

neW! the BUiLDing BLocKs oF caDenceD FLoW (coUrse one)March 2 9 am – 4 pm; 6 PDU – 2 (T), 1 (L), 3 (S/B); $750 Instructor: LeanDog (course takes place at 1151 North Marginal Road, Cleveland, OH, 44114. Stay left of the parking booth for LeanDog’s free lot.) Must take course one & two before three & four.
Part 1: Teamwork, Cadence & Improvement A lot of groups consider themselves teams, but are they really? True teams have a shared understanding that allows for collaboration and the ability to achieve a common goal. While this may seem obvious, many groups that call themselves “teams” struggle with becoming truly effective at working this way.
This workshop introduces a series of practical tools & techniques to groups of people who want to become a higher performing team. We begin with some basics of work visualization and information radiators. Next, look at identification of activities needed to deliver successful outcomes and how to plan a cadence for each activity. Participants also learn a number of effective communication and collaboration techniques including LeanCoffee, Six Thinking Hats, and Delegation Poker. We wrap up with demonstrating how to run effective improvement workshops and how to frame improvements as experiments.
Part 2: Work, Flow & Metrics This workshop helps teams deliver valuable work more predictably. Initially, participants are shown a number of models that aid in understanding how to think of work as valuable. They are challenged to categorize the meaningful categories of valuable work they can produce. Next, groups work together to define an end to end workflow system, including all various work states as well as explicit work policies.
The workshop ends with discussing four key process health charts and how to create them. These are often helpful with predictability and improvement.

neW! Lean portFoLio & roaDmap pLanning (coUrse FoUr)May 4 9 am – 4 pm; 6 PDU – 1 (T), 2 (L), 3 (S/B); $750 Instructor: LeanDog (course takes place at 1151 North Marginal Road, Cleveland, OH, 44114. Stay left of the parking booth for LeanDog’s free lot.) Must take course one & two before three & four.
This workshop introduces portfolio and roadmap planning techniques for creative and innovative work. The course begins by introducing a new planning paradigm and contrasts it against more traditional approaches. Next, to create a more predictable long term planning model, flow principles are applied to the roadmapping process. Benefit Mapping is then introduced as a visual and collaborative way to create a quantifiable prioritization framework. This improves decision making over longer periods of time. We end the workshop by discussing three measures that are used to track process health. Additionally, we look at potential impacts to higher level portfolio planning and budgetary concerns.

neW! staKehoLDer managementMay 18 9 am – 4 pm; 6 PDU – 1 (T), 1 (L), 4 (S/B); $449 Instructor: Pete Evangelista
Who holds a stake in your project? Probably more people than you first think. Each has something to gain or lose in your project’s success. As a PM, you need to be able to understand the influence (for good and for evil) that stakeholders can make and be able to manage that influence. This hands-on course gets to the root of a very common project problem: contention between the PM and the stakeholders. Participants will learn how to evaluate the position of each of the parties, and what factors drive common behavior. Practice techniques for managing the relationship and communicating for smoother project execution.
