WHAT DO I DO WHEN I GET TO THE CLASSROOM?Be there before the students arrive. Review lesson plans and seating charts to
familiarize yourself with the students names. Students will listen and respect you more if you know their name.
Retrieve attachments from internet. Assemble/organize materials. Introduce yourself to the surrounding classroom

What if the plans are unclear or materials are missing? Who do you turn to for help?

WHAT’S MY JOB? Primary goal is to continue student learning. Focus on instruction

STAY OFF THE CELL PHONE!
You do not want students on their phones while you are trying to teach, so set a good example by putting your phone away.
Even it there is downtime during a period and it may be tempting to quickly reply to a text or check your email, it’s best to stay off your phone while students are present.
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED…
Teacher subs may be asked to cover a class during the teacher’s planning period.
You may be asked to change assignments.
Be as cooperative and flexible as you can. Let the administration know if you are uncomfortable with an assignment.

There may be times when a school may find the services of a substitute are less than satisfactory. Some of the reasons:
Poor classroom management skills Lateness Failing to report to an assignment Inability to follow procedures Insubordination Failure to communicate effectively

HOW CAN I KEEP STUDENTS ON TASK?

Keep doors open. Sit near the door where others can
see/hear what is going on. Move to a more public area such as
the Media Center.

WHAT IS SEXUAL HARASSMENT? Conduct that is unwelcome and sexual in nature
Conduct that denies or limits a student's ability to participate in or benefit from a school’s education program.
This can be verbal, non verbal or physical.
Both male and female students can be victims of sexual harassment, and the harasser and the victim can be of the same sex.

END BULLYING!• Bullying is generally defined as unwelcome behavior that occurs over a
period of time and is meant to harm someone who feels powerless to respond
• Schools are a primary place where bullying canhappen
• Can be physical, emotional, or electronic• 15% of school absenteeism is because of
peer-related fear• Students want to fit in, not stand out

WHAT TYPES OF DISCRIMINATION AND BULLYINGPLAGUES THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY?
LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning or Queer) bullying includes, but is not limited to: Abuse (Both Physical and Verbal) Exclusion from social or professional events and
activities Ignoring claims of the LGBTQ members regarding
physical or mental abuse Indirect abuse, such as graffiti or gossip
LGBTQ students are more apt to skip school due to the fear, threats, and property vandalism directed at them.

POLICY 443 - CREATING WELCOMING & AFFIRMINGSCHOOLS FOR TRANSGENDER & GENDERNONCONFORMING STUDENTS
FCPS BOE approved this policy in June 2017 In part, the policy allows students to choose which bathroom to
use based on the gender with which that student identifies. It also gives any student who is uncomfortable for any reason
using a gender-segregated bathroom the option to use a safe and non-stigmatizing alternative — such as privacy curtains, provisions to use private restrooms or office restrooms, or a separate changing schedule in locker rooms.
The policy also allows transgender students to participate in sports that align with their gender identity. So, a transgender girl could play girls soccer, and a transgender boy could play baseball. The policy also says that students are not required to disclose their gender identity.
Sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression are all protected classes within the FCPS non-discrimination policy.
