The Connection

Clifton may have a lot ofhistory and legendaryplaces, but a resident his-torian wants to make one

thing very clear.“The Bunny Man Bridge is not a true

story,” said Lynne Garvey-Hodge, amember of the Fairfax County HistoryCommission and long-time Cliftonresident.

The story may be notorious, but it’snot true, Garvey-Hodge said. Accord-ing to folklore, an escaped prisonerfrom the former D.C. Correctional Fa-cility in Lorton murdered any numberof unfortunate passersby and hangedthe bodies from trees near a claustro-phobic tunnel under the old O&A Rail-road bridge on Old Colchester Roadin Clifton.

But there are a multitude of expla-nations as to what happened, howmany people were killed there andhow the “Bunny Man” got his name. The local history websiteHistoricClifton.org claims that an es-caped convict, Marcus Wallster, wasfound dead near the bridge in 1904,and in his hand he held a crude toolfashioned from a rock. Near Wallster’sbody were dead rabbits. His murderwas attributed to another escapedprisoner, Douglas Grifon. Three teen-agers were allegedly found dead nearthe bridge in April 1905, “their throatsslashed with what seemed to be the

same type of tool that was found next tothe other escapee,” the website continued.Their bodies were hung from one end ofthe bridge with their legs hanging at eye-level for the passengers on the then-busytrain line. In total, up to 19 people are ru-mored to have died there.

There are numerous things wrong withthese stories, Garvey-Hodge said, not theleast of which is that the Lorton prisondidn’t open until 1910.

The red caboose in the parking lotof the Heart in Hand restaurantpays tribute to Clifton’s humblebeginnings as Devereux Station, atrain depot on the O&A Railroad.

Mary Gallagher-Stout uses photos she took in Wash-ington, D.C., as the basis for her pastel-on-newspaperpieces, created in her studio at the Workhouse ArtsCenter in Lorton.

St. Mary of Sorrows Church in Fairfax Station waswhere soldiers injured during Civil War battles weretreated by Clara Barton, who founded the AmericanRed Cross.

She can understand the whispers andmystery, however. The bridge is dark; theroad leading up to it is very narrow; thereare no street lights in the vicinity and it’sjust plain creepy near the old bridge, through which only one car at a time canpass.

Other stories attribute the death to some-one who escaped an asylum on the far sideof the bridge, but that didn’t exist either, she said. There was a poorhouse in the area, where people who didn’t have the meansto live in their own homes could work andearn their room and board, but no placefor the mentally ill.

The story of the Bunny Man Bridge wasalso pointed to as the inspiration for thecharacter of Frank in the 2001 movie“Donnie Darko,” in which a suburban Vir-ginia teenager is menaced by a man wear-ing a fuzzy pajama suit and a scary rabbitmask, at least according to some conspiracytheorists, like the ones who reviewed thebridge on the websites Yelp.com andwikipedia.org.

Clifton does have authentic history to beproud of, without the shaky rumors of thebridge from hell.

Wearing glasses anda green, jailjumpsuit, 49-year-old Kenston Yi

cried softly and wiped his eyes, lastweek, as photos of his wife anddaughter’s lifeless bodies wereshown to the courtroom. At theend of the two-hour, preliminaryh e a r i n g ,though, thejudge foundp r o b a b l ecause to be-lieve that Yim u r d e r e dthem both.

F a i r f a xCounty Po-lice werecalled to hisLorton apartment in the 9200block of Cardinal Forest Lane, onJune 14, around 8:20 a.m., afterYi reportedly told a chaplain atDeWitt Army Community Hospi-tal that he’d strangled his wife anddaughter. As things turned out, themurders actually happened on theprevious morning and, until Yiwalked into the hospital and con-fessed, he’d also been consideringtaking his own life.

“He said he wanted to hang him-self, and he instead carried a ropein a bag into the hospital,” homi-cide Det. Steve Needels testifiedThursday afternoon, Aug. 19, inJuvenile and Domestic RelationsCourt. “He also said he ingested12-13 Ambien, that Sunday night[June 13] after [the two deaths].”

At Yi’s home, police first discov-ered the body of his daughter, Joy,a 15-year-old freshman at SouthCounty Secondary School, beforelocating the body of his wife, Hyon“Hannah,” 47. example. The one-room building wasbuilt 1871 by freed slaves who were deededthe land by their former owner, WilliamBeckwith. It has been restored and pre-served as the first African-American churchin the county, and services are still offeredthere on the fourth Sunday of each month.

Additionally, in the small parking lot be-hind the Heart in Hand Restaurant on MainStreet is a red caboose, an homage to thetown’s start as a train depot on the O&ARailroad. Originally called Devereux Sta-tion, named after John Henry Devereux, therailway’s superintendent. The town was avital link during the Civil War battle ofSanger Station, which, oddly enough, oc-curred in close proximity to the Bunny ManBridge.

The town revels in its quaint, historicnature. Many of the homes on Main Streetare called by their original names, like thePink House, the Beckwith House and thePayne House. The signs in front of thehomes tell their history, along with storiesabout the role each house—and their own-ers — have played in the story of town life. With only 225 houses in the incorporatedtown, walking from the Trummer’s On Mainrestaurant, past the Clifton Store and downto Primitive Baptist Church is a snapshot oflife in Fairfax County from days long passed.

Each year, several events bring residentstogether to share in their small community.A large car show and parade fills MainStreet on Labor Day, followed by theHaunted Trail festival near Halloween. Re-cent contributions include a series of holi-day activities leading up to Christmas thatfeature visits from Santa, caroling and giftwrapping services, all of which is kicked-off by the annual Clifton Candlelight Tourof beautifully decorated homes.

MOVING EAST toward Ox Road, the his-toric nature of Fairfax County can be ap-preciated at two locations worth visiting:St. Mary of Sorrow’s Church and the FairfaxStation Train Museum.

St. Mary’s, on Ox Road at Fairfax StationRoad, is a small white church with greentrim that served as a makeshift hospitalduring the Civil War. A plaque on the frontof the church, near its two small woodendoors, commemorates the work of ClaraBarton, founder of the American Red Cross, who looked after soldiers there that hadbeen injured during the Battle of SecondManassas. The soldiers were transported tothe nearby train station and laid out on thechurch’s grounds, where Barton and a hand-ful of assistants tended to them.

Barton was a Massachusetts native whogot word of troops being attacked by South-ern sympathizers in April 1861. She rushedoff from her Washington office, one of thefirst women to work as a clerk the federalgovernment, to gather supplies to care forthem. She returned to her work shortlythereafter, but once again felt compelled toserve the soldier following the Battle of

Second Manassas and Ox Hill in late Au-gust 1862. Despite horrible weather andthreats of being forced away from her Unionpatients, Barton and her four assistants re-mained at St. Mary’s until Sept. 2, whenthe last patient was loaded onto atrain and off the makeshift hospitalshe had created and Confederatesoldiers captured and set fire to thetrain station, according to the book“Fairfax Station—All Aboard!” byNan Netherton and Whitney VonLake Wyckoff.

The station was not lost forever, though. It was later rebuilt, thendeconstructed and moved to its cur-rent location, just uphill from itsoriginal site on Fairfax Station Road.

Since 1975, the Fairfax StationTrain Museum has served as a one-stop-shop for train enthusiasts andhistory buffs, offering both monthlyevents and weekly open houses forthose who want to learn more aboutthe O&A Railroad and FairfaxStation’s role in the Civil War. EachDecember, the museum hosts a toytrain festival, in which train collec-tors of all ages gather together to trade theircars, have old pieces repaired and sharetheir stories about cars, cabooses and en-gines. Train clubs from across the regioncome together to show off their models, which are on display during the weekend.Even Santa makes an appearance, comingin by, what else, a train.

FURTHER DOWN Ox Road, before theOccoquan River, sits a former prison that’sbeen given a new lease on life as an artscenter.

The Workhouse Arts Center used to bejust that — a workhouse for Reform-eraprisoners at the start of the 20th century.

Now the dormitories have been convertedto studio and gallery space, where artistslike Mary Gallagher-Stout, who takes news-papers and turns them into canvasses.

Gallagher-Stout, who works on her pas-

tel creations in Studio 411 in Building 4 ofthe Workhouse campus, said she was in-spired to find a creative space after takinga nine-week-long program at Virginia Com-monwealth University a few summers ago.

Her medium is a little unusual. She goesinto Washington, D.C., takes photos for afew hours of things she finds interesting, ranging from buildings and monuments toanimals and people, then returns to her stu-dio space and recreates those photos onnewspapers using pastels.

“I’m a visual reporter,” she said. “I’m re-peating a piece of news, an actual event,on newspaper.”

Sometimes the image and the paper are

reflexive. One piece, a recreation of theplace where former president RonaldReagan was shot back in 1980, was createdon a World Affairs page from the Washing-ton Post.

Others tell a story of a specific momentin time. One of her favorite pieces is of asquirrel with a big apple in its mouth.

The apple had fallen onto the ground nearthe U.S. Capitol, explains her daughter, Erin, sitting behind the desk. Only one bite hadbeen taken out of the otherwise perfectapple, and the squirrel, sensing a feast forthe taking, ran over and picked it up in itstiny mouth, then ran away.

The title of the piece is “Nuts are for thebirds, I think I’ll have an apple,” Gallagher-Stout said, giggling.

Looking like an early Blondie-era DebbieHarry with short blond hair and boundlessenergy, she gestures wildly when talkingabout the sense of community and synergythat has followed her decision to occupy astudio at the Workhouse.

“There’s great energy here,” she said. Theartists talk to each other, share ideas andhelp tweak compositions, even discussingwhere they find various shades of colors.

“I fell in love with this space,” she said.“It’s not easy being an artist, putting your-self out there personally, professionally andfinancially. Here, we help each other out.”

And if all that art leads to the urge forquiet contemplation in nature, turndown Lorton Road to Route 1 andfollow the signs to either PohickBay Regional Park or Mason NeckState Park.

Both parks have hiking trails, boat launches and picnic facilities. Both look out on the beautifulPotomac River, sharing a bit ofshoreline on the way to the Chesa-peake Bay. Both parks are knownfor attracting wildlife, especiallywater birds like herons, osprey andbald eagles.

Mason Neck offers an eagle fes-tival each April, organized by thefamily of Elizabeth Hartwell, alongtime Mason Neck resident wholoved the birds and was an advo-cate for their protection when theywere on the endangered specieslist. Her dedication to the gracefulcreatures has been rewarded and

honored by the renaming of the park’svisitor’s center in her honor.

Each January, when the birds are in abun-dance in the area thanks to their wintermigratory patterns, the park offers severalbird watching trips, led by naturalists, dis-cussing the wildlife in the park and point-ing out where eagles like to dive into theicy water in the hopes of catching their din-ner.

Naturalists at Pohick Bay offer guidedkayak tours of the water during the sum-mer months, but kayaks and canoes are alsoavailable for rent on weekends from March

Economy MostCritical IssueTo the Editor:

From my perspective, the economy is cer-tainly the most critical and volatile issue forFairfax County residents in this election sea-son.

In U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-11), we havean astute manager who understands the com-plexity of the current economy. He supportslegislation and courses of action to help fami-lies in Northern Virginia and spur long-termeconomic recovery. Connolly has demonstratedhe is not afraid to stand up to his own partywhen he thinks it is wrong.

As Connolly bravely pointed out in lastSunday’s Washington Post, fellow Democratsagree on the principle but not the timing ofwhen to allow the Bush tax cuts to expire forthose making over $250,000. Our leaders mustexercise caution with drastic changes affect-ing all economic levels. Small businesses inNorthern Virginia and across the country needprotection and support to get back to what weneed most: creating American jobs. The pre-mature expiration of these tax cuts would placea large, unnecessary burden on small busi-nesses. We need evidence of a robust recoverybefore these tax cuts expire, and we need toappreciate Connolly’s insight and steadfastconcern for job growth. Connolly understandsthe needs of Northern Virginia, and he under-stands that right now we cannot risk slowingeconomic growth. He has a record of puttingsound policy ahead of partisan politics.

Playing SOL Game?To the Editor:

The School Board will stop at nothing to useour children in the SOL game, resulting in to-tal disregard for community schools, reason-able start times and bus rides, along with threelawsuits in the last three years.

The most recent lawsuit was filed by CliftonElementary parents to reverse the decision toclose one of the highest performing schools inthe region. During the vote to close the school, the School Board stated that the “renovationcosts per student” were too high, even thoughthe recent Capital Improvement Plan FY2011-2015 indicated that there are many schools

smaller than Clifton and eight with higherrenovations costs per student.

More schools will be closed without regardto sound financial, educational, communityand environmental impact assessments, justbecause the school board says they “can do it.”

Clifton parents did not want their schoolrenovated, but the School Board insisted, be-cause the School Board “knows what is best”for our children. Is this anyway to run a schoolsystem? Parents, I ask you. We must bond to-gether, voice our opinions and use our vote. It’s not an option. Our children are dependingon it.

No Whining HereTo the Editor:

The Connection published a letter to theeditor full of inaccuracies and resorting to uglyclass warfare [“Public Funds for Private,” Con-nection, Aug. 19-25, 2010]. The premise thatClifton Elementary parents are seeking any-thing other than what they have is absolutelyludicrous. This is precisely the issue. The schoolperforms superbly academically and its facili-ties operate satisfactorily. Let’s keep it open.We are also being accused of wanting thecounty to foot the bill for us. Now this reallyblew me away. The county, the School Board, our roads and our school system are all paidand procured with funds collected via a fiscalsystem: taxation. And believe me, we all payour taxes. The same tainted glasses want toexpose us as unethical. The same taintedglasses want to admonish us for wanting acharter school. This really showed how out-side of the loop some people are.

The lack of veracity in the letter writer’s ac-cusations and the ignorance of her thesis areirritating and void of logic. They are an insultto the integrity of the many families involvedin this struggle to keep their community school.Quite disturbingly, they reveal some of the truemotives behind the move of the School Boardto close CES. This is a highly performing schoolin an affluent enclave of Fairfax County re-stricted in growth by the ordinances that regu-late and protect the Occoquan Watershed Re-serve. Its enrollment is not “engineered” but a

result of the organic populating trends ofClifton’s historic characteristics and the socialeconomical make-up of its closest higher-den-sity neighboring communities, Fairfax Stationand Compton Roads. Clifton Elementary is areflection of the dedication of its community.

For the letter writer’s edification here’s somedetail. The process of evaluating the school forrenovation took approximately one year. It’sabsolutely important to clarify that two of theoptions from the Final Report of the South-western Regional Planning Committee clearlydelineate the renovation option. During thissame period of time, the School Board startedraising objections of different nature pertain-ing to the school facility, its access, its age, itsenrollment, etc. Ever so patiently the commu-nity sought to work hand-in-hand with the “all-knowing, all-caring” School Board. One by one,the community sought to provide cost-efficientsolutions and even forego anything not quali-fying as essential. In essence, the CES parentcommunity worked hard and diligently, trust-ingly to solve issues that would diminish thechances of keeping the school open. From anoutsider perspective, they have done an excel-lent job.

In the end, the School Board cast their votewithout really basing their decisions on thestudy, which by the way, cost over a million of

our hard-earned tax dollars. Theyalso arbitrarily and capriciouslyswept off the table the options ofrenovating as well as building a

new elementary. What the letter writer, as wellas School Board Member Liz Bradsher (Spring-field) fail to see is that people are tired of taxa-tion without representation, people are tiredof duplicitous politicians like Bradsher who sayone thing to get your vote and then turn aroundto pursue self-serving propositions. People aretired of not being respected, people are tiredof the ever expanding government bureaucra-cies that can’t be held accountable and that doas they please with our tax dollars.

We are not whining, we are defending whatis rightfully ours, the right to educate our chil-dren in an environment that’s nurturing, en-riching and close to home paid by our hardearned tax dollars. I challenge Bradsher andher allies to submit the issue to a referendum. The School Board would be crushed. I chal-lenge Bradsher to provide a logical and well-researched rationale to close the school. As ofright now, logic and fact are getting in the wayof explaining her vote.

Avoiding Constituents?To the Editor:

I have hunted high and low to find a townhall event planned for my U.S. Rep. GerryConnolly (D-11). It has been all to no avail. This is the election season. This is the Augustrecess when they are supposed to be holdingtown hall events and such.

I would like to hear what he has to say, andI would like him to hear what we have to say.I know that there are many like-minded citi-zens and voters who feel the same.

Last year, I feel he played the coward andheld events in gated communities or at seniorcitizen centers where the general public wasn’tinvited. Am I wrong to think that when youare elected to Congress, you should have amorsel of responsibility and courage to facethe concerned voters in your district?

Diane SinclairClifton

We the PeopleTo the Editor:

Recently, I received a brochure from U.S. Rep.Gerry Connolly (D-11) about his efforts at defi-cit reduction and was confused because hevoted for legislation that greatly increased thedeficit rather than reduced it. For example,Connolly voted for the failed $862 billionstimulus, the $1.4 trillion governmenthealthcare takeover that abrogates individualrights, and for economy-destroying cap-and-trade legislation, which thankfully has notpassed the Senate.

In this same brochure, Connolly brags aboutvoting against $269 billion in spending billsthat he believed contained wasteful pork-bar-rel projects. Yet, it is my understanding thathe also requested more than $3 billion in ear-marks.

America is in a very precarious state andneeds to change direction quickly before it istoo late. Members of Congress take an oath touphold the Constitution, and most, likeConnolly, have not done so. We need newpeople in Congress who will truly protect ourindividual rights rather than trample on them.[Republican congressional candidate] KeithFimian understands that as our representativein Congress, he will be serving “we the people,”rather than big government.

One of Robinson High’s greatest base-ball seasons ever ended with a disap-pointing, lopsided loss when the Ramsfell to the heavy-hitting Great Bridge

Wildcats (Chesapeake) at the 2003 Virginia StateAAA title game which took place at Shepherd Sta-dium in Colonial Heights.

The one-sided championship game setback hardlydiminished the outstanding spring season it had beenfor head coach Bill Evers and his Rams, who ran intoa Great Bridge squad that had ousted defending statechampion Madison in a semifinals game in similarfashion, 14-0.

The state finals game story, recorded in the June12-18, 2003 edition of the Fairfax Connection putsome perspective on the Robinson loss.

“The letdown of not winning was tempered by therealization of just how good a team — especiallyoffensively — the champion Wildcats are,” the storyread. “Great Bridge, just as it had done against Madi-son, hit the ball all over the ball park against theRams. The Southeastern Region champion Wildcatsknocked around 11 hits, including four extra basehits, to dominate the title game affair and win theirfirst state crown in school history.”

Evers, the Rams’ head coach, was impressed withthe Great Bridge offense.

“They’re as good a hitting team as we’ve seen allyear,” he said. “They put so much pressure on youwith the bats. You’ve got to come out and play closeto a perfect game to beat these guys. They reallyswing the bat well.”

ROBINSON, competing in its first state champion-ship game since winning the title back in 1980, hadmade it to the finals with a semifinals win over For-est Park (Prince William), 12-9, four days earlier atShepherd Stadium. The finals game against GreatBridge had been scheduled for the following day butrain in the Richmond/Colonial Heights area thatweekend had forced three consecutive days of thetitle game being postponed. The game finally took

place on a gorgeous Tuesday afternoon/evening.But as it turned out, about the only thing to effec-

tively slow down Great Bridge had been the weather. In the title game, the Wildcats scored five runs inthe top of the second inning before effectively put-ting the game away the following three innings byscoring one, two and four runs to build a 12-3 leadit would never lose.

The highlight of the game for Robinson came whenclean-up hitter Andrew Fritz, the Rams’ seniorcatcher, blasted a two-run homer over the right cen-ter field fence with two outs in the third inning toget his team within 6-3.

The Rams, which went 22-5, experienced somesolace afterwards, finishing second in the NorthernRegion to Madison and making it all the way to thestate championship game.

“We got here,” said Robinson senior third basemanMark Genovese. “Twenty-three years ago was the lasttime we made it this far. It was a real good accom-plishment. Coming into the season we knew wewould go far. We were expected to be one of the topteams in the region. Things worked out good.”

Fritz echoed those sentiments.“When I look back on it, I’ll see it was kind of a

cool thing to have reached the state finals,” he said.“It’s a great experience to be the first team in 23years to represent Robinson here.”

Wiley Lee, the Great Bridge head coach, was gra-cious in victory.

“Robinson is a great team,” he said. “We were for-tunate to take advantage of a couple of their mis-takes.”

Turning Back the ClockRams, seven years ago, went all the way to thestate finals.

Robinson Secondary’s baseball team madeit all the way to the Virginia state semifi-nals in 2003.

so they entered. Gleason said they found Joy’s body on the ground inthe dining area, with her feet sticking out and her face covered with ablue shirt. Williams located her mother’s body upstairs in a bedroom, and Gleason identified photos of both of them.

Meanwhile, Needels and Det. John Wallace arrived at the hospitalaround 9:40 a.m. Needels said Yi a retired, 30-year, Army veteran waslying on a bed in the emergency room. “I talked to Dr. French, the ERphysician who’d examined him because, [French] said, Yi said he wantedto hurt himself. The doctor said Yi wanted to talk to a chaplain abouthis wife and child; then [French] medically discharged him.”

The detectives spoke with the chaplain, who was reluctant to pro-vide much information. However, said Needels, “The chaplain told usYi had told him that, at the Lorton address, there’d be two bodies andhe’d strangled them.”

Next, Yi accompanied the detectives to the CID (Criminal Investiga-tions Division) office on base, where Needels read him his Mirandarights. Then he interviewed Yi for nearly three hours.

“[Yi] said he went downstairs around 9:30-10 a.m., Sunday morn-ing, and his daughter was studying with a laptop in the dining room,”testified Needels. “He asked her to lay down and relax, and she did, onher back. Then he covered her with a blanket and grabbed a dumbbelland placed it on her neck and pressed down. He then put his ear to herchest to check for a heartbeat and did not find one.”

After that, said Needels, Yi “carried a heavier dumbbell upstairs towhere his wife was lying on her side on a mat. He thought he used a10-pound weight on [her]. He hit her threetimes on the back of the head with it. Then heplaced the dumbbell across her neck andpressed down. He also checked her chest forany breathing.”

At some point, said the detective, Yi covered Joy’s face with a blue T-shirt and then spent the next 11-13 hours driving around Prince Will-iam County in his SUV. Needels said Yi dropped the two, silver dumb-bells into the Occoquan River and later showed that spot to the PrinceWilliam Dive Team, which recovered them.

Needels said Yi appeared groggy to him, seemingly “coming downoff of something. He said he’d had two or three hours of sleep, thatweek. But as a detective of 18 years, it was clear to me that he under-stood what was going on. He didn’t seem high or like he was under theinfluence of narcotics.”

Defense attorney Andrew Elders asked if Yi mentioned the devil, andNeedels said, “A couple times, he said the devil was inside him.”

“Did he say the medication put thoughts in his head?” asked Elders.“Yes,” the detective answered. Needels said Yi had told him that he

and his wife had been married 24 years and, during the interview, “Heimplied he wanted to hurt himself and kill himself.”

“He said he wanted to kill himself, but didn’t want [his family] tosuffer,” said Elders.

“He was concerned about leaving Hannah alone,” said Needels. “Hesaid the suffering was why he did it.”

“At one point, he said he just snapped?” asked Elders.“Yes,” said Needels.“He told Joy, ‘Daddy’s sorry, but I don’t want you to suffer,” said

Elders. In one version, he also said, ‘Daddy’s sorry. I’m sending you to Jesus,’”

said Needels. “He was crying and was more emotional when he talkedabout his wife.”

“When he was killing Hannah, he said, ‘Let’s all go together,’” saidElders.

“Correct,” said the detective. Needels also agreed when Elders said,“[Yi] said he was very sick, and worried he couldn’t provide for hisfamily.”

When Elders asked Needels if Yi was afraid he’d lose his job [withthe National Guard Bureau], Needels said Yi told him he “had a pre-sentation next week and wasn’t prepared for it.”

Judge Thomas Sotelo explained that, to find probable cause of guilt,he had to believe that Yi committed the two murders and did so withmalice. Saying he did find probable cause, Sotelo then certified Yi’stwo counts of murder to the grand jury for possible indictment and Yireturned to jail.

The Hemlock facility is now under the ownership

The ropes course of 60-70 activities has beentweaked and constructed over the past 25 years,Montgomery said, and hosts numerous team devel-opment outings each year. The ropes course and thezipline present opportunities for professional groupsand scout troops to learn to trust each other and worktogether in new ways that can bring them closer, shesaid. “We have a variety of school groups, non-profitorganizations and corporations frequent the pro-grams at Adventure Links at Hemlock,” Montgom-ery said.
