DO NOW: take out your notebook and a pen. Review your notes from yesterday.
What are the selection tools? Allows you to select a portion of the
image you want to work on.
Types of selection tools:
1. Marquee tools
2. Lasso tools
3. Pixel selection tools
How do I know when something is selected?
An animated dashed line appears on the image.
Also known as “marching ants”.
To deselect: CTRL D
What are the MARQUEE tools? Allows you to select a
rectangular or circular portion of an image.
Shortcut key: M Lower right triangle
indicates grouped-kind tools.
Click & hold or SHIFT M to switch between.
What is the OPTIONS bar?
CONTEXTUAL menu that displays different options depending on which tool is selected.
What are the FREEHAND selection tools? Shortcut: L
How do I use the LASSO tool? To select part of an
image, click left mouse button and trace around the area.
In the options bar, set a FEATHER to soften the selection.
What are layers? A layer is a section within an image that can
manipulated independently. They allow you to control individual elements within an image and create various effects of the the same image.

What is the layer palette? You can add a new
layer by clicking on the tab located at the bottom of the layers palette.
You can also delete a layer by dragging the layer into the trash can located at the bottom of the layers palette.

How do I use copy & paste with selections and layers?1. Use the selection tools to marquee part of
your image.
2. COPY CTRL C and PASTE CTRL V
3. A new layer is automatically created for you.
4. Hide the background layer to see the new layer alone.
CLASS EXERCISE:1. Log in and Open Photoshop. 2. Open Fruit Folder in “Edelman Public Folder”
on the Server. Open Fruit File.3. Create a New Layer and Name it “Fruit”4. Using the Lasso Tools, select 3 pieces of fruit
and copy and paste them to the new ‘Fruit Layer’
5. Experiment with FEATHERING your selections.
