Unit 1: Geography

How to create a Unit Page

5-5-5You can choose three of the following:

- 5 Pictures/Images/Symbols

- 5 Quotes or Historical Documents

- 5 Colors/Fonts

- 5 People, Places, or Events

- 5 Vocabulary Terms

Vocabulary:• Absolute location: the EXACT location of a place (Address, Latitude/Longitude coordinates)

• Relative location: a description of what a place is NEAR

• Regions: what locations have in common (geography, language, religion)

• Tidewater: the eastern most region of North Carolina; contains the barrier islands and beaches

• Coastal Plains: in Eastern North Carolina; contains low, flat, fertile plains

• Piedmont: foot of the mountain; middle region of North Carolina

• Mountains: in Western North Carolina; contains part of the Appalachian Mountain range

• Barrier Islands: the chain of islands off of North Carolina’s coast; also known as the Outer Banks

• Geographical Features: the physical features of the land

• Climate: the seasons and weather experienced in a region

NC TOURISM VIDEO

• Congratulations! You have been hired by North Carolina’s Travel and Tourism Department. Your job is to create a tourism video that encourages travelers to visit your North Carolina region. You and your group will work together to create an engaging and informative video about your region!

What needs to be included? • Geography- thoroughly describe the geographical features and the

climate experienced in your region

• Industries/Jobs- what are major industries found specifically in your region that might influence someone to move there

• Tourist Attractions- What can travelers do for fun? What places can they visit?

• Interesting Facts- Find 3 fun facts about your region (something that was invented there, a natural phenomenon, a cool historical fact, someone famous from that region, etc.) One of your facts MUST be historical (relating to settlement of NC, development of NC, wars, or political movements).

Group Member Roles

• Narrator(s): Student(s) will use their best “Morgan Freeman/Tim Allen” narration voice to tell tourists about your region. Student(s) should be enthusiastic and really “sell” their region!

• Film Creator(s): Student is in charge of creating the video on the device using iMovie, camera, or Adobe Spark (other apps are okay, just be sure you know how to use it). They will be in charge of adding images, transitions, subtitles, and/or music.

• Rubric Checker: As your group researches and creates their video, the rubric checker ensures that the group has included all the information needed.

• Facilitator: Student will aide in all aspects of the creation of the group’s video. He/she will make sure all members are on task and will help where needed. Facilitator will also create a storyboard/script/guide for the video to make sure it flows.

• Your job is to interview someone about their experience and write it down

• Monday, we will have Circle Discussions so it is important that you complete your interview!

• You can interview a teacher if you don’t have anyone else

• Only 2 groups can leave to film (have to see your storyboard)
