Vancouver, who had discovered and ex-plored much of the Pacific Northwest ageneration earlier.

The Hudson’s Bay Company saw theColumbia River as a favorable locationto trap beaver and trade fur pelts. Withthe establishment of the Hudson’s BayCompany’s trading post at Fort Vancou-ver in 1825, Washington State’s historywas underway.

The trading post served as headquar-ters for the company’s Columbia Depart-ment, which encompassed present-dayBritish Columbia, Washington, Oregon,Idaho, and western Montana. The Brit-ish-owned company enjoyed exclusivedomain of the rich country by encourag-

ing newcomers to settle north of theColumbia River, with hopes of estab-lishing the Columbia River as the south-ern boundary of Canada.

However, as Americans migratedwest, a boundary dispute developed. On June 15, 1846, a treaty between theUnited States and Great Britain gavethe territory south of the 49th parallelto the United States. The first Ameri-can troops arrived in May 1849, to main-tain peace and protect American inter-ests. Camp Vancouver became the re-gional command of the Department ofthe Columbia.

Such military notables as GeneralPhillip Sheridan, General Ulysses S.Grant, General George Marshall, Gen-

eral George McClellan, and GeneralOmar Bradley have lived and worked atCamp Vancouver.

Today, Vancouver incorporates theFort Vancouver National Historic Siteand is the the oldest continuous non-Native American settlement in theNorthwest. The stockade and nine ma-jor buildings have been reconstructedin their original locations.

Together, they give visitors an ideaof what life was like when FortVancouver was a trading center for Na-tive Americans, Hudson’s Bay Companyemployees, settlers, and visitors to theterritory known as Oregon.

Just north of the Fort lies Officers

Row, a four-block neighborhood of 21houses that dates from 1849 to 1906.It was from Officers Row that GeneralGeorge C. Marshall welcomed the firstRussian transpolar flight in 1937. Herealso, President James Polk establishedthe first federal presence in the OregonTerritory.

Vancouver’s citizens approved refur-bishing the homes to preserve the old-est neighborhood in the Pacific North-west for future generations. Today, Of-ficers Row houses private residencesand local businesses, including a folkart center.

The Hawaiian Islands are about2,400 miles southwest of the west coastof the continental United States.Stretching from northwest to southeast, the major islands are Nihau, Kauai,Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Mauiand Hawaii.

For most purposes, the City andCounty of Honolulu is the “Island ofOahu.” Known as the “Gathering Place,,Oahu has a land area of 597.1 squaremiles. It is the center of business andgovernment for the State of Hawaii.

Downtown Honolulu is Hawaii’sfinancial center while Waikiki, the world-famous tourist destination, is only afew miles away. Smallest of the fourcounties in geographical size, it hasthree-fourths (872,478) of the State’spopulation (1.2 million).

There are five recruiting stationson Oahu: Kapiolani in Honolulu,Pearlridge in Aiea, Kapolei in Kapolei,Kaneohe in Kaneohe, and Mililani inMililani.

While Oahu may be small, there isplenty to do. There are endless milesof quiet beaches, wild surf, and naturalbeauty to absorb.

Waikiki, the tourist capital ofHawaii, is a fun place and only a shortdistance to the Honolulu Zoo andDiamond Head.

A short drive from Waikiki are PearlHarbor, and the USS Arizona Memorial.

The memorial, only accessible byboat, straddles the remains of the USSArizona, which was sunk during theattack on Pearl Harbor, December 7,1941. Inside the memorial you can readall the names of those who died thatfateful day.

Waimea Falls Park is a historicnature park on 1,800 acres, over 6,000species of plant life, 45-foot waterfall, bird sanctuary, hiking trails, swimming, and archaeological ruins.

Ehukai Beach Park is where you findthe famous Banzai Pipeline.

When surfers think of the BanzaiPipeline they think of the greatest, mostchallenging waves in the world. Thisbeautiful tubed surfing break got itsname in the late 1950’s, when BruceBrown, a famous surf cinematographer, shouted out “Banzai” while narrating thefilm “Surf Surfari” as a surfer dropped inon a particularly vicious wave. Whenit’s “cranking,” the surf, besides beingthe most spectacular in the world, canalso be the most dangerous. The wavesare steep and powerful and can comeup within seconds. They also breakfuriously on the shallow reef, the causeof many broken bones and lacerations. This beach has some of the best sandbartype surf on Oahu.

During calmer periods, usuallyduring the spring and summer, swimming is good; otherwise it’s veryhazardous, so take good care.

The other three recruiting stationsin Hawaii are located on the islands ofHawaii, Kauai, and Maui.

Hilo Recruiting Station is on theIsland of Hawaii, the largest island inthe Hawaiian Islands. It was formed byfive volcanoes, two of which are stillactive (Mauna Loa and Kilauea).

It is known as the “Big Island” andas the “Orchid Isle.” With a land area of4,028 square miles, it is twice the sizeof all the other islands combined.

Kilauea Volcano, the world’s mostactive, is constantly adding acres of lavato the youngest island in the Hawaiianchain.

Ka Lae, on the Big Island, alsoknown as South Point, is the southernmost point in the U.S.

Mauna Kea, which rises 13,796 feetabove sea level, is the world’s tallestmountain when measured from itssubmarine base. It is often snowcappedin winter. On the Big Island, one can

literally go skiing in the morning andsurfing in the afternoon.

The Island of Hawaii is believed tohave been first inhabited by Polynesiansaround the fifth century and by AD 1000coastal areas were fairly wellestablished. First contact with non-Polynesians occurred in 1527, when aSpanish vessel wrecked off the coast ofSouth Kona.

The captain of the ship and hissister survived to intermarry with nativeHawaiians, founding a line of chiefs.Captain James Cook made his initialvisit to South Kona’s Kealakekua Bay in

1779, and was killed after a skirmishwith natives that same year.

Kamehameha I, also known asKamehameha the Great, was the firstHawaiian chief to gain control of andrule the Hawaiian Islands.

For many years, Kailua-Kona washis favorite residence and he died in

1819, at Kamakahonu Bay.You can seethe original statue of Hawaii’s first rulerat Kapaau, in North Kohala, the placeof Kamehameha’s birth.

Replicas of these statues are alsoon display in Hilo at Wailoa Park and onOahu in front of Iolani Palace.

The first Christian missionariesarrived on the island of Hawaii in 1820,and the first Christian church in Hawaiiwas built in Kailua-Kona. Today,Mokuaikaua Church is home to an activecongregation, its spire a landmark inthis seaside town.

Kauai Recruiting Station is on theisland of Kauai, the Garden Isle. Kauaiis the oldest of the inhabited HawaiianIslands. Because of its age, Kauai wasthe first of the five major islands todevelop the lush forests and vegetationthat the world has come to associatewith Hawaii. Erosion has created someof the most dramatic landscapes in theislands while reducing what was once atruly massive volcano (Waialeale) to aheight of about 5,000 feet at its summit.

Kauai’s inhabitants were the firstHawaiians to come in contact withEuropeans, when Captain Cook landednear Waimea in 1778. The first majorsugar plantation in Hawaii was locatedhere in the 1830’s. It is not heavilypopulated or developed, and its resortareas are concentrated in only a fewlocations around the island.

Among the natural attractions ofKauai is Waimea Canyon, known as theGrand Canyon of the Pacific. It is a huge, lush rift a few miles inland from the NaPali Coast on the leeward side of theisland. Ten miles long and 2,000-3,000feet deep, the canyon offersbreathtaking views, spectacularwaterfalls and some of the densestrainforest in Hawaii.

Further inland from Waimea Canyonis what may be the wettest spot in the

world, on the northeast slopes ofWaialeale. This area receives in excessof 450 inches of rain annually.

Maui Recruiting Station is on theisland of Maui, the Valley Isle, secondlargest of the populated islands.

Maui County includes the islands ofKaho’olawe, Molokai and Lanai. Molokaiand Lanai, lying just to the west, wereonce part of Maui. These islands wereformed by a group of six volcanoes.

The largest of these, Haleakala incentral Maui rises more than 10,000 feetabove sea level and offers spectacularviews when it isn’t fogged in. The islandswere separated from one another whensea levels rose and flooded the deepvalleys between the volcanoes.

The channel between Maui, Molokaiand Lanai is much shallower than thesurrounding ocean, and provides shelterfor a great variety of marine life.Magnificent humpback whales populatethe channel during the winter months, giving birth to their calves.

According to legend, it was thedemigod Maui who fished the islandsout from the ocean, and who forced thesun to slow its travels across the skiesso that Maui’s people could enjoy thewarmth, and have time to fish and farm.

The island is divided into severaldistinct geographic areas. West Maui is

isolated from the rest of the island bythe mountainous remnants of one ofthe volcanoes that helped create theisland.

The dormant volcano, Haleakala(“House of the Sun” in Hawaiian)dominates Central Maui.

Although the volcano has noterupted in almost three hundred years,it is not considered inactive.

Lahaina, on Maui’s West Coast, athumb-shaped peninsula was the firstcapitol of the Nation of Hawaii.

West Maui, inland from the beachesand resort areas, is still ranch country, reminiscent of the mainland Southwest, and sometimes of the Scottishhighlands, but most often of nowhereelse in the world.

The windward (east) shore gets alot of rain so the area is quite tropicalwith lots of lush vegetation and jungle.

Wainapanapa Park, which isgenerally not crowded, has a perfectlittle black sand beach.

Guam Recruiting DetachmentGuam Recruiting Detachment is lo-

cated in Agana, Guam, where Americasday begins. Since time immemorialAgana has been the seat of governmenton Guam. Guam is also called Guahan,(we have) in the language of theChamoru people.

The taotao tano’ (people of the isle)have named areas on Guam to corre-spond to parts of the human body.Chamorro legends tell of Fu’una whoused the parts of her dying brother’sbody to create the world.

His eyes were the sun and the moon, his eyebrows were rainbows, his chestthe sky and his back the earth. She thenturned herself into a rock, from whichall humans originated.

Agana (or Hagåtña) means blood. Itis the life-blood of a larger body called

Guahan or Guam. Hagåtña is the life-blood venue for government.

Fort Santa Agueda, (also known asFort Apugan or Fort Kasamata), built inthe 1800’s, affords a splendid view ofHagåtña and Hagåtña Bay.

Government House is the official resi-dence of Guam’s Governor and is adja-cent to the fort’s sprawling grounds. Thehistory and natural beauty of Guam of-fer numerous sights of interest. Thegraceful remains of Spanish buildings, plazas, bridges, and the site that theSeal of Guam was patterned after, maybe seen in Hagåtña.

Agana is also the site of the DulceNombre de Maria Basilica from whichArchbishop Anthony Apuron guides theCatholic churches on Guam.

Other sites to visit are the ChiefQuipuha statue (Kepuha’s legacy andGuam’s Spanish History) adjacent to theboat basin, the statue of liberty, Plazade Espana, Guam Museum and the newSagan Dinana’ or the new AganaChamorro Village known also as theFarmer’s market.

American Samoa Recruiting Stationis located in Pago Pago, American Sa-moa, “Where America’s day ends andPolynesia begins.” American Samoa isa small archipelago that occupies only76 square miles of land.

Five of the main islands (Tutuila,Ta’u, Ofu, Olosega, Aunu’u, Nu’utele)are volcanic, with rugged peaks, nar-row coastal plains and fringing reefs.

Swain’s and Rose Islands are coralatolls. The islands’ volcanoes inactivesince 1911, have sculptured the landand left an intriguing land formation, including lava tubes to explore.

deepest and best-protected harbors inthe South Pacific.

Most people live in villages along thenarrow coastal plains, living off the sea

and cultivating agriculture in the plainsand nearby hills. Half the island chainis still covered with tropical forests andwoodlands that are home to wildlife andbirds.

The exact date is unknown and willprobably remain so forever, but, some-time around 600 BC, Polynesians hadalready established themselves on theeastern tip of Tutuila near the presentday village of Tula.

Evidence suggests that the first in-habitants came from the west, possi-bly by way of Indonesia, the New

Hebrides, and Fiji before they sailedeastward to Tonga and Samoa.

Dutchman Jacob Roggeveen hap-pened upon the islands in 1722.Roggeveen, however, fixed the positionof the island group inaccurately andsailed away without landing.

The Samoas remained hidden forforty years until they were rediscoveredin 1761. Out of the way of heavy ship-ping traffic that transgressed the Pa-cific in the early 19th century, Samoaescaped official European interest untilthe 1830’s.

Then suddenly, as if Samoa’s poten-tial was realized overnight, Samoa be-came enveloped in a final wave of colo-nial expansion. European powers andthe United States though officially op-posed to colonization, were neverthe-less looking for suitable harbors in thearea. The U.S. took Tutuila, specificallyto use Pago Pago Bay as a coaling sta-tion.

In 1940, Pago Pago and the SamoanIslands became a staging area for theUnited States Marine Corps prior to themajor advance against Japan duringWorld War II. The main attraction toAmerican Samoa is the sand, sun, andcoral seas.

Korea Recruiting Station is locatedin Camp Coiner, Yongsan, Republic ofKorea; a stones throw from Seoul.

Seoul, capital of South Korea and theworld’s fifth largest city, has taken itsplace as one of Asia’s ultra-modernmetropolises with Tokyo and Bangkok.

A closer look, of course, proves thismodernity slightly misleading, asnestled among the many skyscrapers, crowded streets and bumper-to-bumpertraffic are plenty of ancient temples, palaces and other landmarks illustrat-ing Seoul’s more authentic and atmo-spheric character.

Camp Zama is known locally as “thejewel of the orient.” At first glance Camp

Zama could easily be mistaken for avacation resort. Beautiful trees line thestreets and surround the area. Duringspring, cherry blooms add to the beautyof the base.

There is also an award winning 18-hole golf course and a fishing pond(Dewey Park) located right on the base.Tokyo, less than one hour away by train, has many interesting things to do andsee.

What is TRICARE?

In response to the challenge of maintaining medical combat readiness while providing the besthealth care for all eligible personnel, the Department of Defense introduced TRICARE.

TRICARE is a regionally managed health care program for active duty and retired members ofthe uniformed services, their families, and survivors.

TRICARE brings together the health care resources of the Army, Navy and Air Force andsupplements them with networks of civilian health care professionals to provide better access andhigh quality service while maintaining the capability to support military operations.

TRICARE is being implemented throughout the U.S., Europe, Latin America and the Pacificas a way to:

Improve overall access to health care for beneficiaries.Provide faster, more convenient access to civilian health care.Create a more efficient way to receive health care.Offer enhanced services, including preventive care.Provide choices for health care; andControl escalating costs.

Who is Eligible for TRICARE?

Active duty members and their families, retirees and their families, and survivors of all uni-formed services who are not eligible for Medicare.

If you have other primary health care insurance, TRICARE Prime may not be your bestoption.

The Health Benefits Advisor is available at battalion headquarters to help.TRICARE offers eligible beneficiaries three choices for their health care:*TRICARE Prime — Wherever contracted doctors and clinics are available.TRICARE Extra — a preferred provider option that saves money.TRICARE Standard — a fee-for-service option (the old CHAMPUS program). The main challenge for most eligible beneficiaries is deciding which TRICARE option, Prime,

Extra or Standard, is best for them.Active Duty personnel are enrolled in TRICARE Prime and pay no fees.Active duty family members pay no enrollment fees, but they must choose a TRICARE option

and apply for enrollment in TRICARE Prime. There are no enrollment fees for active duty families in TRICARE Prime.*TRICARE Prime Remote — All active duty soldiers will sign up for this program when

they in-process if they are not already enrolled. This option allows the soldier to go to anyTRICARE certified doctor or clininc contracted to accept Prime as full payment with no costshare or co-pay.

Most will need to obtain housing in thecivilian market you are assigned to.

For many of you this will be your firstencounter living away from a military commu-nity since becoming a member of a militaryfamily.

In some ways, this can be as much of aculture shock as being sent overseas.

A military community is geared to supportthe military mobile life-style.

In a civilian community, you will spendmore time locating resources.

A good place to start would be the DefenseTechnical Information Center web site for BasicAllowance for Housing (BAH), for current ratesat www.dtic.mil/perdiem/bah.html.

There you can put in the zip code of yourassigned location and be shown BAH for singleand with dependents.

Ask your sponsor to send you the housingsection of the local newspaper and home andapartment guides for the area.

Another good source of information wouldbe the local Chamber of Commerce.

An on-line search can get you to the Cham-ber of Commerce home page for the area you areassigned.

You can send them an email asking forinformation to make your move to the area alittle easier.

When you start looking for a place to livethere are a few things you want to keep in mind.

* Consider the cost of utilities, lawn care, and yes, snow removal in some areas, whendetermining where you will live.

These expenses can quickly deplete yourmonthly budget.

If utilities are included in a lease agreement, ensure that it is stated in the lease agreement.

* Check on rental security deposits andhook up fees too.

* Check leases carefully for hidden costs, availability of appliances, and repair and mainte-nance responsibility.

Housing Information* Make sure the lease has a military

clause that allows you to cancel your lease withofficial military orders.

* Talk with your sponsor and others as-signed to your station and company, as well asbattalion headquarters family support.

Other points worth considering are:What distance are the schools from your

new residence? Is school busing provided by the school

district? If transportation is provided by the district,

how safe and secure is it?Does the school district or local school

provide classes and transportation for childrenwith special needs?

What type of fees does the school requirefor classes, extracurricular activities, books, busing, meals, etc.?
