GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER
UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE
“When you have done all you have been commanded, say ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.” The metaphor in the story could seem harsh to us today. A servant has worked hard all day, and rather than receiving a much-needed respite, the master commands an additional task. Jesus, however, is appearing to their sensibilities. This was a hierarchical society in which everyone had a place. His listeners would know this. No servant would presume a reward for good deeds.
It’s important to remember that we do have a place at God’s table. But we don’t “earn” it. Dining with the Lord at the heavenly wedding feast requires surrender. It requires deep faith in God and His promises. It also requires commitment. The kingdom takes work! There are fields to plow and initiatives to prepare. There are sheep to tend to and family to care for. There are people waiting for our yes to generous service. When we serve dinner at a homeless shelter, we are waiting on the table of Christ. When we visit an ill relative, we’re imitating the Good Samaritan. We’re visiting Jesus! We’re growing his kingdom of life and love.
The Gospel today reminds us to check our motives. Are we serving because we’re seeking a reward? Or because we have faith that this is who we’re meant to serve? That is, is this where we’re meant to be? The Gospel reminds us that this faith can do powerful things! “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.” But, ultimately, we’re not the ones doing the deeds. We’re not the ones “earning” the grace. Faith, and the good we do for others, is a gift. ©LPi

MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO - ALENTAR ENTENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ESCRITURA
Los tiempos que se esta n viviendo en la sociedad actual con referencia a la injusticia y la facilidad para la violencia son alarmantes. Los medios de comunicacio n muestran todos los dí as el co mo se quita la vida humana, la destruccio n del planeta, de las plantas y animales. La primera lectura del Profeta Habacuc, su reclamo a Dios en su tiempo es un reflejo del nuestro: “¿Por que me haces ver la injusticia?” ¿Acaso no estamos cansados de todo lo que vemos y escuchamos? Tal pareciera que Dios no escucha ni interviene en la miseria humana. Pero no, no es así . Dios responde e invita al Profeta a escribir su visio n: “El que vacila nunca contará con mi favor, el justo si vivirá por su fidelidad.” (Habacuc 2:4). Los eventos de la vida del ser humano esta n en los planes de Dios. Depende de nosotros la fidelidad y el compromiso. ¿Esta s de acuerdo con el Profeta? ¿En que sentido? El Evangelio, por otro lado, nos muestra la forma de alinearnos con la gente buena para hacer cosas que ayuden a la sociedad a crecer en justicia y promover la paz. Esa paz que tanto se necesita en las fronteras del mundo, con los refugiados y los que caminan en caravana dejando sus paí ses. Sin embargo, el punto principal de todo es la fe. Por eso, los apo stoles piden que se aumente su fe. El Maestro responde y da ejemplos palpables para llegar hasta mover montan as y agrega lo siguiente: “Así también ustedes, cuando hayan hecho todo lo que les ha sido mandado, digan: Somos servidores que no hacíamos falta, hemos hecho lo que era nuestro deber.” (Lucas 17:10). ©LPi

WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED Question:
What is the story behind the rosary?
Answer:
The rosary is a sacred and popular Catholic devotion, but its origins are mysterious. Prayer beads to facilitate meditation began in the early ages of the Church. In the early medieval period, bead strings were used to count Hail Marys or Our Fathers. A tradition has developed that the rosary in its current form was given to St. Dominic by the Blessed Mother. However, the earliest biographies of the saint do not include this story. In the Middle Ages, the prayers were grouped into 50 Hail Mary's with verses from Psalms and vignettes from the lives of Jesus and Mary. By the 16th century, the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries were established.
The rosary rose to prominence in the late 1500s. The Turkish Empire was spreading across eastern Europe, and pirates were raiding Christian ships. The Christian nations of Europe rallied for a great battle at sea. Pope St. Pius V urged all Christians to pray the rosary for victory. While vastly outnumbered, the Christian fleet was victorious at the Battle of Lepanto. The pope established October 7th as the feast of the Holy Rosary. Later, all of October would come to be known as the Month of the Rosary.

VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) is an IRS sponsored
program to offer free tax help to people with $55,000 or less
taxable income on their tax return.
For tax year 2018, the VITA Coalition volunteers prepared
over 32,000 tax returns resulting in over $45 million in tax
refunds.
Tax returns are prepared by trained and certified volunteers. These volunteers undergo a minimum of 20 hours of training and must pass a exam specified by the IRS before they are allowed to prepare and submit a tax return.
The VITA staff and volunteers are held to the highest standards of confidentiality, quality, and customer service. Your tax information is only used in preparation of your tax return.
