Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples,
who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over— twelve wicker baskets full.

SPIRITUAL BOOK GROUP The next discussion will be Thursday, August 6, at 7 pm. To receive the Zoom link, please email [email protected]. The book is Same Kind of Different as Me, a tale that weaves two completely different life experiences into one common journey.
WE ALL WANT IT TO BE OVER. As the weeks go by, I am increasingly asked about when the parish will reopen our facilities for meetings and events. Following guidance from the CDC, the diocese, and other sources, we have been led by science and not emotion. Some parishioners are urging me to keep everything in the parish closed until the end of the year; others are urging me to open things up completely right now, and to resume a normal schedule. In the past several months the medical understanding of the virus, its epidemiology, and its transmission have become more defined but there are a lot of unanswered questions. Responses to the contagion have been politicized, to no one’s benefit. Emotions rule, and the finger-pointing makes it almost impossible to find helpful and accurate information.
There is a basic fact we can not forget: this is a very contagious and infectious virus. I have been loath to think that anyone would become sick because they were exposed to the contagion at our church. Knowing that elderly are a high-risk group for a more severe case of Covid-19, I have also been loath to have visitors travel to the homes of shut-ins. Advice from the diocese remains that we should not have home visits except by a priest for anointing in danger of death.
Exposure may be a low risk, but I remain uncomfortable returning to “Business as Usual” in our busy parish. Cautiously following advice and vigorously enhancing our use of technology, we have offered the parishioners of Saint Elizabeth
Ann Seton Parish a choice of how and when they want to participate in Holy Mass (in person or via media) and to receive the sacraments of Holy Communion and Confession. Funerals and weddings have been celebrated, even if it meant livestreaming to persons who could not attend. We have found ways for meetings to continue and groups to gather virtually. Yes, this revealed some burps and belches in our Internet service but some patient detective work seems to have found and fixed those issues (keep your fingers crossed). Parish life has slowed but not stopped.
I’ve been informally making decisions one month at a time, most recently to keep events canceled throughout August. Aware that planning must be done for religious education and especially for the celebrations of First Holy Communion and Confirmation, I’ve prayerfully discerned that we should extend our closure for six weeks.
FOR NOW, WE REMAIN CLOSED UNTIL MID-SEPTEMBER. Please watch the Friday Feed and other parish communications for updates after that. I understand that not everyone will be happy with this decision. We do what we can with the information we have. My prayer is that through our continued practices of prayer, devotions, spiritual reading, Mass attendance (virtual and in-person), and reception of Holy Communion (in- person or in Spiritual Communion), and caring for each other, our parish family will continue to grow in love for Jesus and love for each other.

O God, come to my assistance;O Lord, make haste to help me!
Psalm 70 (69):2, 6
ENTRANCE HYMN(sung by cantor)I heard the voice of Jesus say,“Come unto me and rest;Lay down, thou weary one, lay downThy head upon my breast.”I came to Jesus as I was,So weary, worn and sad;I found in him a resting place,And he has made me glad.
I heard the voice of Jesus say,“Behold, I freely giveThe living water; thirsty one,Stoop down, and drink, and live.”
Text: CMD; Horatius Bonar, 1808–1889, alt.Music: trad. English melody,
adapt. by Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1872–1958.
I came to Jesus, and I drankOf that lifegiving stream; My thirst was quenched, my soul revived,And now I live in him.
I heard the voice of Jesus say,“I am this dark world’s light;Look unto me, thy morn shall rise,And all thy day be bright.”I looked to Jesus, and I foundIn him my star, my sun;And in that light of life I’ll walkTill traveling days are done.
I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say
You are my rescuer, my help;O Lord, do not delay.

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF THE PROPHET ISAIAH Isaiah 55:1-3
Thus says the LORD:All you who are thirsty,come to the water!You who have no money,come, receive grain and eat;Come, without paying and without cost,drink wine and milk!Why spend your money for what is not bread;
your wages for what fails to satisfy?Heed me, and you shall eat well, you shall delight in rich fare.Come to me heedfully, listen, that you may have life.I will renew with you the everlasting covenant, the benefits assured to David.

A READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW Matthew 14:13-21
When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist,he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of thisand followed him on foot from their towns. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said,“This is a deserted place and it is already late;dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villagesand buy food for themselves.”Jesus said to them,“There is no need for them to go away;give them some food yourselves.”
But they said to him,“Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.”Then he said, “Bring them here to me, ”and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass.Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven,he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over—twelve wicker baskets full. Those who ate were about five thousand men,not counting women and children.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION(R.) Alleluia, alleluia. One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forthfrom the mouth of God.

A READING FROM THE LETTER OF SAINT PAUL TO THE ROMANSBrothers and sisters:What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine,or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? No, in all these things we conquer overwhelminglythrough him who loved us.
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate usfrom the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

WHAT CONCERNS, QUESTIONS, OR NEEDS arise in me in response to God’s Word?
PROFESSION OF FAITHI believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all things visible and invisible.I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God,born of the Father before all ages.God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,(At the words that follow, up to and includingand became man, all bow)and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the deadand his kingdom will have no end.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sinsand I look forward to the resurrection of the deadand the life of the world to come. Order of the MassCOMMUNION MEDITATION In the Breaking of the Bread
In the walking on the road, we saw Him.In the telling of our hopes, we saw Him.In the burning of our hearts, we saw the Lord.At the meal He took the bread and thenHe blessed it, broke it, offered it.In the breaking of the bread, we saw Him!Suddenly our eyes were opened, and we knew He was alive!
We set out to find His friends to tell them.We went to Jerusalem to tell them;and with joy we told them, “We have seen the Lord!”And as we were speaking there,He stood among us, blessed us, said to us,“Now my peace I leave with you.”We saw Him!Suddenly our eyes were opened, and we knew He was alive!
But then we became afraid without Him.In the darkened room we stayed without Him,waiting for the One He said that He would send. Then the Spirit of the Lord came down upon us,
filling us, changing us, giving us the strength to say:We saw Him!Suddenly our eyes were opened, and we knew He was alive!
We ran out into the street to tell them, everyone that we could meet, to tell them,“God has raised Him up and we have seen the Lord!”We took bread as He had doneand then we blessed it, broke it, offered it.In the breaking of the bread, we saw Him!Suddenly our eyes were opened.
There within our midst was Jesus, and we knew He was alive. In the breaking of the bread,He is here with us again, and we know He is alive.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
