Apparently they were involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle and two other people in the other vehicle were also killed. Dennis Daugherty was a highly respected and leading Quantity Surveyor who spent most of his professional career whilst based in Durban, KwaZulu Natal. His remarkable professional career included many highlights and proud achievements, both as a professional Quantity Surveyor as well as an astute businessman. His professional career served as a role model to many of his colleagues and countless students that learnt their trade under him in the industry. He was a highly respected professional in the industry and an absolute gentleman. Dennis Daugherty was an extremely active and loyal servant of the Association of South African Quantity Surveyors (ASAQS) for many years and served on the Board and numerous committees over a long period of time. He held the position of President of the ASAQS during 1978 and was later honoured with the title of Honorary Life Member of the Association. He also served on the South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Professions (SACQSP) for a number of years, which lead to the position of President of that organisation during 1982. He was retired and living in Durban at the time of his passing. Some of his most notable professional achievements included the following: • Student Gold Medallist (from the University of Natal) – 1951 • President of ASAQS – 1978 • Honorary Life Member of ASAQS

    OBITUARY OF DENNIS EDGAR DAUGHERTY

    It is with shock and sadness that we have to advise that one of the Past Presidents of the Association,Dennis Edgar Daugherty, together with his wife Lynn, passed away on Sunday 19 April 2009 as the resultof a fatal road accident.

    Dennis and his wife Lynn were tragically killed in a motor accident in the East London area whilst ontheir way to Port Elizabeth on Sunday 19 April 2009. Apparently they were involved in a head-on collisionwith another vehicle and two other people in the other vehicle were also killed.

    Dennis Daugherty was a highly respected and leading Quantity Surveyor who spent most of hisprofessional career whilst based in Durban, KwaZulu Natal. His remarkable professional career includedmany highlights and proud achievements, both as a professional Quantity Surveyor as well as an astutebusinessman. His professional career served as a role model to many of his colleagues and countlessstudents that learnt their trade under him in the industry. He was a highly respected professional in theindustry and an absolute gentleman.

    Dennis Daugherty was an extremely active and loyal servant of the Association of South African QuantitySurveyors (ASAQS) for many years and served on the Board and numerous committees over a longperiod of time. He held the position of President of the ASAQS during 1978 and was later honoured withthe title of Honorary Life Member of the Association. He also served on the South African Council for theQuantity Surveying Professions (SACQSP) for a number of years, which lead to the position of Presidentof that organisation during 1982. He was retired and living in Durban at the time of his passing.

    Some of his most notable professional achievements included the following: Student Gold Medallist (from the University of Natal) 1951 President of ASAQS 1978 Honorary Life Member of ASAQS

    THE LAW OF RELATIVITY APPLIED TO INVESTMENTS

    A REPORT-BACK OF THE ASAQS BOARD MEETING : 02 AND 03 APRIL 2009

    Members are advised that the full Board meeting of the ASAQS was held on Thursday 02 and Friday 03April 2009 at the ASAQS offices in Midrand. It was a busy meeting with many important items discussedand debated. Whilst a more comprehensive report will in time be prepared and distributed for theinformation of the members, a brief report-back of some of the more salient and important items thatwere decided upon can be found on the ASAQS website.

    ASAQS OFFICES CLOSED FOR PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

    Members are advised that the ASAQS offices will be closed for business during the following publicholidays over the coming two-week period:

    Wednesday 22 April 2009 (Election Day) Monday 27 April 2009 (Freedom Day) Friday 1 May 2009 (Workers Day)

    All other days surrounding these public holidays will be business as usual.

    ASAQS CONFERENCE 2009 CANCELLED

    Members are advised that the Board of the ASAQS has resolved to cancel the ASAQS Congress 2009

    that was earlier announced to be scheduled for Port Elizabeth on 21 and 22 May 2009. Reasons for thisis the lack of time to organize such an event and the general congested progamme of others congressesthat have already been arranged for this year. No final decision has been taken by the Board as towhether such a congress will be hosted during 2010.

    We apologise for any inconvenience in this regard.

    STRIKING OF MEMBERS AND PRACTICES DUE TO NON-PAYMENT OF FEES

    Members are advised that in spite of numerous requests and appeals to some members and practices topay their outstanding fees due to the ASAQS, it has sadly resulted in some members and practicesrecently having been struck from the membership roll of the ASAQS due to their ongoing non-payment offees. This action was undertaken in terms of clause 6.5 of the Constitution of the Association.

    CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

    Members are advised that the SACQSP has publicly called for nominations to the Council of theSACQSP for the four-year term 2009 to 2013. This call for nominations is repeated here to emphasisethe importance of the members and voluntary associations (ASAQS) putting forward suitable nominationsto ensure that the SACQSP is populated with respected and credible persons to represent the QSprofession on the Council.

    ASAQS ENDORSES CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY PUBLICATION

    After consultation and with the support and commitment of some 15 industry related organisations withinthe built environment, Essential Publishing has announced the production of a Construction IndustrySpecial Publication, which will undoubtedly provide a hitherto unpublished broad-spectrum profile of theindustry and all who operate within it.

    This special publication will be distributed with the June 2009 edition of Succeed, a magazine thatfocuses on entrepreneurship and management in Southern Africa within the built environment. Succeed ispublished monthly and has a reported circulation of 27 000 copies per edition. It is widely read bydecision makers in National, Local and Provincial Government as well as leaders in the private and public

    PUBLICATION OF THE ASAQS "CENTENARY PUBLICATION"

    Although the initial indications were that the publication would be launched around November 2008, dueto inevitable publishing delays this target date was sadly not achieved and the anticipated publicationdate will be sometime around June 2009. We wish to apologise to the readers and advertisers alike forany inconvenience caused as a result of this delay.

    Nevertheless we would invite all QS practices to assist the ASAQS by furnishing us with interestingphotos and memorabilia for possible inclusion in the publication. In particular we will have a chapterintitled "Major Projects" and we are specifically looking for photos for this chapter depicting interestingprojects that may have some significance in the history of the ASAQS.

    We are pleased to advise that Professor Thys Sigle' has also agreed to assist the ASAQS with thepreparation of the draft document prior to going to print. We wish to thank him for his willingness to assistthe ASAQS in this very important task
