Good-bye for now. That’s the long and short of it. When we moved to Sarasota in 2012, Lori, my wife of 38 years and I were intent on making Florida our permanent home. Our whole family was now here and we had a grandson to spoil rotten and love with abandon. We joined St. Thomas More after looking at all the Sarasota parishes. More accurately, we were sucked into the spirit that everything about St. Thomas represented to us. In 2014, when the Bishop assigned me to our parish, we were delighted. We were overwhelmed by the welcome, support, and love of the people who built “a house of living stones.”

At virtually the same time that my ministry began at STM and we were getting into a rhythm in our lives, deep challenges beset our family and my career role changed – requiring me to be in Hartford, CT regularly each month. Travel and family challenges only allowed me to serve at STM at weekend Masses (only one leg of the diaconate stool). Soon the travel and the time at STM on weekends became a burden to my family. I asked Fr. Joe for a leave of absence from active ministry in the fall of 2015.

Travel has increased to where most of my time is spent in Hartford and the company recognized the need for me to relocate. So I convinced my family to move there, allowing us to be together. They understood and agreed. I started the process only to come to the conclusion just recently that nobody’s heart was into moving once again. So where are we now? I will be in Hartford nearly every week for the 3 years until my retirement. I am coming out of official retirement as a deacon in the Archdiocese of Hartford and returning to St. Thomas the Apostle where I will be able to minister in a variety of ways during the week and every other weekend when I do not return home to Florida.

In 3 years, God willing, I will retire and return to Florida to be a full time husband, father and grandfather. I will also request faculties in the Diocese of Venice and hope to be active in a parish for as long as I am able; maybe Fr. Joe will put in a good word for me. From the bottom of my heart I will tell you how much I’ve missed being a part the dynamic and purpose-filled Christian community of St. Thomas More. You have something very special and I know Fr. Joe and parish leadership will uncover new and exciting ways for STM to radiate the presence of the risen Christ to all. Please pray for me and my family as we chart this new course. Peace and God’s blessings be with you. - Deacon Kevin Monahan

TAKE FIVE FOR FAITH: May your eyes be bright

“One day we will learn that the heart can never be totally right if the head is totally wrong.” This teaching by Martin Luther King Jr. illuminates the Gospel saying about the need for light. If we see clearly, we will know what to do. If we learn to think past opinions and can be motivated beyond personal comfort, we will find our way all the way to the truth. King also said: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Love is the lamp that brightens every eye.

“The lamp is the light of the eye. If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light.”- Diocesan Publications UBP 2016
