“Our infinite sadness can only be cured by an infinite love.” Pope Francis

Blessing in a Time of Violence - by Jan Richardson

Which is to saythis blessing is always.

Which is to saythere is no place this blessingdoes not long to cry out in lament,to weep its words in sorrow,to scream its lines in sacred rage.

Which is to saythere is no day this blessing ceasesto whisper into the ear of the dying, the despairing, the terrified.

Which is to saythere is no moment this blessing refusesto sing itself into the heartof the hated and the hateful, the victim and the victimizer, with every last ounce of hope it has.

Which is to saythere is none that can stop it,none that can halt its course, none that will still its cadence, none that will delay its rising, none that can keep it from springing forthfrom the mouths of us who hope, from the hands of us who act, from the hearts of us who love, from the feet of us who will not ceaseour stubborn, achingmarching, marchinguntil this blessinghas spoken its final word, until this blessinghas breathed its benedictionin every place,in every tongue:Peace.Peace.Peace.

The Feast of St. Thomas More - Our Patron Saint is Wed. June 22

Join us at the 8:00 am Mass as we celebrate our heritage.

Sir Thomas More known to Roman Catholics as Saint Thomas More, was an English lawyer, social philosopher, author, statesman, noted Renaissance humanist and Secular Franciscan. Sir Thomas More opposed the Protestant Reformation. Pope Pius XI canonized Him in 1935 as a martyr of the schism that separated the Church of England from Rome; Pope John Paul II in 2000 declared More the “heavenly Patron of Statesmen and Politicians.”

Born in London in 1478, Thomas More was educated at St. Anthony’s School, then considered one of London’s finest schools. Thomas More began his studies at Oxford in 1492, and received a classical education. He left Oxford after only two years to begin legal training.

Thomas More married Jane Colt in 1505. The couple had four children Jane’s death in 1511. (A family portrait is etched in glass in the Gathering Area, above the doorway to the main Sanctuary.) Following Jane’s death, he married Alice Middleton. Though they had no children, he raised Alice’s daughter from her previous marriage as his own. An affectionate father, he wrote letters to his children whenever he was away on legal or government business, and encouraged them to write to him often. Thomas More insisted upon giving his daughters the same classical education as his son, a highly unusual attitude at the time.

Sir Thomas More was secretary and personal adviser to King Henry after his election to Parliament in 1504, he joined the opinion of the theologians at Oxford and Cambridge that the marriage of Henry to Catherine had been unlawful. But as Henry began to deny Papal Authority, More’s qualms grew.

Sir Thomas More supported the Catholic Church and saw the Protestant Reformation as heresy, a threat to the unity of both church and society. Believing in the theology, polemics, and ecclesiastical laws of the church, he “heard Luther’s call to destroy the Catholic Church as a call to war,” remaining steadfast in supporting the supremacy of the Pope as Successor of Peter over that of the King of England. In 1530, More refused to sign a letter by the leading English churchmen and aristocrats asking Pope Clement VII to annul Henry’s marriage to Catherine, and quarreled with Henry VIII over the heresy laws. In 1533, he refused to attend the coronation of Anne Boleyn as the Queen of England.

On April 13, 1534, Sir Thomas More was asked to appear before a commission and swear his allegiance to the parliamentary Act of Succession. He accepted Parliament’s right to declare Anne Boleyn the legitimate Queen of England, but steadfastly refused to take the oath of supremacy of the Crown in the relationship between the kingdom and the church in England.

With his refusal to support the King’s annulment, More’s enemies had enough evidence to have the King arrest him on treason. On July 1, 1535, More was tried and charged with treason. After the jury’s verdict was delivered and before his sentencing, More spoke freely of his belief that “no temporal man may be the head of the spirituality.” He was sentenced to be hanged, drawn, and quartered (the usual punishment for traitors who were not the nobility), but the King commuted this to execution by decapitation. The execution took place on July 6,1535. When he came to mount the steps to the scaffold, he is widely quoted as saying: “I pray you, I pray you, Mr. Lieutenant, see me safe up and for my coming down, I can shift for myself;” while on the scaffold he declared that he died “the king’s good servant, but God’s first.”
