Mr. Whit’s ADV Tech APPL (A wheel class at CFAA) got a real life example of the shop safety section and 1 student, Katie Esker, got a real close view. During the Aerospace Exploration event the Traviss Aircraft Powerplant class provided the demonstration for an 8th grade field trip and also ran the en-gine for the wheel class. The students were able to observe the reason for hearing protection and the force of a jet engine.

Sun-n-Fun Aerospace Exploration Event at CFAA

This was an historic year in women’s sports in Polk County. For the first year, girls in Polk

County were able to participate in

separate weightlifting competitions.

Girls weightlifting records in Florida

go back to 2004, but previously girls

in Polk County who wanted to partic-

ipate had to do so with the boys in

the Spring.

Girls compete in weight classes, per-

forming two lifts-the bench press and

the clean and jerk. The total weight

from those two lifts are combined. It isn’t just about pure strength. Girls must learn specific

techniques, from breathing to stance to placement, to maximize their strength and help them be

successful in their lifts. Coach Sasser and Mrs. Sasser have worked with the girls this year to

help them reach their potential.

We are proud of our KHS Inaugural Team. Their next meet date is in District Competition at

George Jenkins High School on Saturday, January 16.

Thanks to the Dart Foundation, students in K-12 are learning about

water, its properties, its uses, and how it travels in nature through

what’s initially called the “Water Cycle.” In more advanced studies

like Earth-Space Science, this becomes the “Hydrologic Cycle.”

But why just study it, why not touch it, measure it, and really under-

stand it?” Thanks to KHS’ Earth Space Science teacher, Mr.

Bartuska and his recent Grant Award from the Dart Foundation of

$4,470.00, students will soon be physically measuring all the as-

pects of the of the Hydrologic Cycle, especially as it applies to Flor-

ida. All of KHS’s ninth-grade Earth-Space Science classes will be able to experience hands-on learning with

sophisticated instrumentation and Three Dimensional Modeling of the

Florida Aquifer System. Students will use real instrumentation to meas-

ure Stream Flow, Rainfall Intensity, Dew Point, and Humidity. Mr.

Bartuska plans to further enrich the lessons by inviting Licensed Hydrolo-

gists and Water Resource Engineers from the Southwest Florida Water

Management District and other local municipalities and Engineering

Firms. This opportunity to interact with real Scientists, Engineers, and

Technicians will provide a meaningful experience for students to experience what it means to work as a Pro-

fessionals in the Scientific and Engineering field.

A very special thanks is in order for Mrs. Mango, Mrs. Troutman, Chanel Jackson

(FCA Leader), Tyra Harriell, Deashana Allen, Kiyana Allen, Tobias Larry, and Na-

than Taylor for their participation in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes annual

Fall Neighborhood Clean Up. The neighborhood clean-up took place on Saturday

December 12, 2015 from 8:00am-12:00pm. One of the focus areas of service for

FCA is community and they all did a great job helping serve the community.
