Wildcats Storylines ...REGULAR SEASON SUCCESS: Seven games into the 2016 season, the Wildcats find themselves in a solid spot. The team has started the year 6-1, the program’s best record since 2012, when the Wildcats started the season with a 7-0 mark. The last two times the Wildcats won state championships (2008 and 2011), the team entered the home stretch of the season with a 6-1 mark.

PLAYOFF PUSH: The Wildcats’ early season foes have not fared well this season. The team’s first five opponents have a combined record of 10-24. The lack of early computer points ensures an important remainder of the sea-son, as the team’s last five foes have a combined 21-13 record. The Wildcats passed the first test of a tough 4-game stretch to end the season. Following the win over GlenOak, the Cats now look to Archbishop Moeller, St. Xavier, and St. Edward, teams with a combined 12-8 record. The last three weeks of the season will be crucial for the Wildcats, who currently sit at eighth in the OHSAA computer rankings.

DOMINANT D: The Wildcats have simply been dominant on defense this season, allowing just 7.4 points a game. More impressively, the Cats have allowed 100 rushing yards in a game just twice and 100 passing yards in a contest only once. GlenOak managed to surpass the century mark in both categories, but the only other team to gain over 100 yards on the ground was Detroit Catholic Central, which currently stands at 6-0.

FOURTH DOWN ARMY©: The Wildcats have reaped the benefits of a con-sistently reliable special teams unit. Matt Trickett ‘17 has provided big field goals all year, converting of 6-of-8 attempts, including 6-of-6 within 50 yards. Colin Goodfellow ‘17 has only needed to punt seven times, but has averaged 43.3 yards per punt. In the return game, the Wildcats have averaged 19 yards per kick return and 12.4 yards per punt return. Benjamin Delhees also gave the Wildcats a big boost last week, recovering a GlenOak fumble on a kickoff return to set up a Matt Trickett field goal at the end of the first half.

SPREADING THE BALL: The running game has been the strength of the Saint Ignatius offense, but the passing game has done its part, thanks to quarterback Pat Ryan ‘17. The senior has done an excellent job of finding dif-ferent targets this season. Wildcats’ quarterbacks have completed passes to 14 different receivers this season. Travis Pot ‘17 leads all wideouts with 13 catches for 202 yards. The team’s 7 passing touchdowns have also been spread evenly, with six different Wildcats wideouts reaching the end zone.

UPDATE ON THE WILD KITTENS: The freshman blue team fell to Bedford, 14-13 on Wednesday. The freshman regulars and the JV squad play Archbishop Moeller on Saturday morning.

UP NEXT: The Wildcats hit the road next weekend for a 2 p.m. Saturday contest against St. Xavier. The Cats emerged victorious over Xavier last year, 34-20.

Learning about the Crusaders ...GOOD TIMES, BAD TIMES: Archbishop Moeller began the season on a tear, winning three of their first four games. One of the Crusaders’ wins came against national powerhouse Don Bosco. Even more impressively, Moeller’s win over Don Bosco came on the road in New Jersey. The Crusaders raced to a 20-0 lead thanks to a pair of touchdown strikes by Evan Ernst. Since the win, however, “Big Moe” has struggled, losing the last three. St. Xavier and Elder eked out wins over the Crusaders, winning by a combined nine points. Moeller’s 3-4 record forces the Crusaders to defeat either Saint Ignatius or St. Edward or face elimination.

AERIAL ATTACK: The Crusaders have a fearsome aerial attack, headlined by Evan Ernst. The 6’3”, 215 pound senior leads the offense with 1,027 yards and 10 touchdowns on the year, completing 57.9 percent of his passes. Ernst aver-ages 146.7 passing yards per game, utilizing a host of Crusader wideouts. Six different Crusaders have a receiving touchdown and four have over 100 yards. RJ Khayo is Ernst’s favorite target, as the duo have combined for 384 yards and 3 touchdowns.

4.6 YARDS AND A CLOUD OF DUST: One of the best running backs in the Cincinnati area, running back Colin Thurman leads the Crusaders and the Greater Catholic League South with 567 yards. The junior has 4 rushing touchdowns and three 100-yard performances. Thurman has started all 7 games, averaging 81 yards per game and 4.6 yards per rush.

BALLHAWKS: Opposing passers beware: the Crusaders have a solid secondary. Defensive backs Hayden Horter and The-Moor Kelly have three interceptions apiece this season in seven games. As a team, the Crusaders have 7 picks, and the secondary has recorded 10 pass breakups on the year. Horter and Kelly alone have 10.5 tackles for loss and 3 sacks, too. The Wildcats would be wise to avoid ill-advised passes against the Crusaders.

KEEP THE STREAK ALIVE: The Crusaders have quite an impressive streak, according to Moeller’s Athletic Communications staff. The Crusaders have scored in 97 straight regular season games, dating back to the start of the 2007 campaign. Including playoff games, the Crusaders’ streak is at 118 games. Should the Crusaders score against the Wildcats this week, the streaks would tie program records for consecutive games in which Moeller scored. Ironically enough, the Wildcats have also scored in 118 consecutive games. The team’s regular season streak stands three games short of Moeller’s mark, however.

HANG ONTO THE BALL: Like many teams, the Crusaders are tough to beat when they win the turnover battle. According to Moeller’s Athletic Communica-tions staff, Big Moe is 36-3 since 2009 when it has the advantage in turnovers.

UP NEXT: The Crusaders will stay close to home at Lockland Stadium next Saturday for a critical showdown with the St. Edward Eagles. The Crusaders fell in last year’s matchup, 49-17.

RB JAMES ANDREWS ‘17

Few rushing offenses in the state of Ohio have the punch of the Wildcats’ backfield, thanks in part to Jimmy An-drews. The 5’11”, 195 pound running back has 493 yards and six touchdowns on the year, averaging 6.8 yards per carry. The senior notched 81 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries last week. Andrews will be key for the Cats down the stretch.

LB ADAM SHIBLEY ‘17

The “Linebacker Legion” has dominated opponents this season, thanks in part to the efforts of Adam Shibley. The 6’1”, 228 pound linebacker is second on the squad with 26 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss. Shibley also has 2 sacks and 1 fumble recovery. The senior led the Cats with 6 tackles against GlenOak. Saint Ignatius needs another big ef-fort from Shibley this week to limit Moeller on the ground.

By Eddie Dwyer Dublin, Ohio - In what was a game all too similar to the Wildcats’ 63-56 loss at Mentor in Week 2, the Moeller Crusaders, behind their resilient and talent-rich senior quarterback Thomas Macvittie, run off 21 points in the final four minutes of the second quarter and close to 38-35 by halftime. The respective offenses continued to trade punches in the second half before two field goals by Moeller’s gifted senior kicker and Michigan State recruit Matt Coghlin, a 36-yard effort that knotted the score at 52 with 3:31 remaining in the fourth quarter and a 26-yard game-winner with 10 seconds left to be played, gave the Crusaders their first victory over Saint Ignatius in six meetings on the gridiron. Setting up Coghlin’s game-winner was the second-effort running of Crusaders sophomore tailback Colin Thurman off a short scoring drive that resulted from Saint Ignatius coming up inches shy of a first down after electing to go for it on fourth down. Thurman rushed for 73 yards on 18 carries. Moeller sealed its dramatic comeback victory on a leaping interception by senior linebacker/defensive back Tyler Burandt and not only improved its record to 4-4, but also kept its chances alive for an OHSAA Division I, Region 2 playoff appearance. The final numbers from Coffman Stadium on Saturday night, much like the Mentor game, would give most defensive coordinators insomnia. The Wildcats and the Crusaders combined for 1,229 offensive yards, including 631 by Moeller off 89 plays. Saint Ignatius ran 72 plays for 598 yards. The Wildcats, who now stand 4-3, got another brilliant performance through the air and on the ground from senior quarterback/co-captain Dennis Grosel, who completed 22 of 38 passes for 457 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for 84 yards and three TDs on 12 carries. Dennis broke his own single-game school record with the 457 passing yards. As for Macvittie, the 6-foot-4, 215-pound University of Pittsburgh re-cruit not only hurt Saint Ignatius with a powerful arm that produced 464 yards and six touchdown passes, but also frustrated the Cats’ D with his ability to scramble, throw on the run and avoid sacks with Houdini-like moves. Some of the other big numbers on the night were produced by Wildcats senior wide receivers Jack Cook (7 receptions for 117 yards), Cal Grbac (5 receptions for 181 yards and two TDs, including an 80-yard hookup with Grosel on the first play from scrimmage) and Tyler Musbach (3 receptions for 79 yards). Cats junior tight end/linebacker James Leyden finished with 4 catches for 52 yards and a touchdown. Moeller’s display of good hands and yards after the catch was led by 6-5, 240-pound senior tight end and The Ohio State University recruit Jake Hausmann (7 receptions for 194 yards and three touchdowns), junior running back Hunter Hughes (4 receptions for 112 yards), 6-5, 225 junior tight end Matt Dotson (2 catches for 40 yards and a TD) and senior wide receiver Cole Ashmore (4 receptions for 76 yards and two touchdowns). Hausmann, who runs determined routes and brings quickness and a strong burst for a young man with his size, was a matchup that gave the Wildcats’ defense headaches all night. Two of Jake’s three TD receptions were catches and runs of 57 and 76 yards. Along with Grosel’s impressive rushing figures, Saint Ignatius received 61 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries from strong and skilled junior tailback Jimmy Andrews.

Page 10: WEEK 8: SAINT IGNATIUS WILDCATS VS. ARCHBISHOP MOELLER CRUSADERS · 2016-10-27 · Should the Crusaders score against the Wildcats this week, the streaks would tie program records

By Eddie DwyerCleveland, Ohio - In facing each other for the first time since a regular-season

encounter in 1995, Saint Ignatius and Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller decided in 2014 to renew their relatively short, but still storied rivalry, by meeting at a neutral site, or halfway in terms of travel.

In both 2014 and 2015, the Wildcats and the Fighting Crusaders agreed to take a Week 8 matchup to Dublin Coffman Stadium, which was a great host. Saint Ignatius prevailed in 2014, 34-20, and last season Archbishop Moeller won for the first time in six gridiron meetings with the Wildcats, 55-52.

When we refer to the Saint Ignatius-Archbishop Moeller football rivalry as short but storied, it is because the first two meetings between the Cats and the Crusaders took place in the 1989 and 1993 Division I OHSAA State Championship Games.

Saint Ignatius won the second and fifth of its record 11 OHSAA big school state football titles by defeating Archbishop Moeller in both of the state championship matchups, 34-28 in the Joe Pickens-Adam Hyzdu shootout at Ohio Stadium in Columbus in 1989, and 38-20 at Massillon’s Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in 1993. Those state championship victories over the Crusaders also resulted in the first two of the Wildcats’ three National Titles. The third national crown came in 1995.

Coach Chuck Kyle’s Cats also defeated “Big Moe” in two regular-season encounters, 1994 and 1995.

So, if you are the “Men of Moeller,” you can’t help but call on last year’s only victory over Saint Ignatius in Varsity Football and shake your head at how familiar the circum-stances will be for both teams on Friday night.

As was the case during Week 8 at Dublin Coffman Stadium last Autumn, Arch-bishop Moeller takes a record of 3-4 into Friday’s neutral-site game versus 6-1 Saint Ignatius, as two names synonymous with Ohio High School Football are looking to stay in the race for a spot in November’s OHSAA Division 1 Regional Playoffs.

The kickoff from Memorial Stadium at Otterbein University is 7 PM for two tradition-rich programs who have combined for 20 state football championships and 8 national titles on the gridiron. The Wildcats were also National Runners-Up in 2008.

In this week’s OHSAA and Joe Eitel computer playoff ratings, Saint Ignatius was sitting in the eighth spot in Region 1 and Moeller was ninth in Region 4. Under the OHSAA Harbin Computer Playoff System, the top eight teams in each of the state’s regions at the end of the regular season (Oct. 29) qualify for the playoffs.

Although the Fighting Crusaders rallied and then turned the Cats away in last season’s three-point thriller, neither team qualified for the 2015 OHSAA playoffs. In that offensive battle last year, Moeller ran off 21 points in the final four minutes of the second quarter and closed to 38-35 by halftime.

In a second half that saw both offenses land haymakers, the Crusaders would prevail on two fourth-quarter field goals by Michigan State recruit Matt Coghlin (correct), including the game-winner with 10 seconds remaining.

Archbishop Moeller will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak on Friday night - 21-14 to St. Xavier, 55-14 to La Salle and 30-28 to Elder. Saint Ignatius will take the field having won three in a row.

In the overwhelming loss to La Salle, the Crusaders yielded 402 yards of offense, in-cluding 388 through the air. Yes, it’s no secret around the Queen City that Archbishop Moeller’s defensive secondary has been a bit shaky.

BY THE NUMBERS: Crusaders quarterback Evan Ernst has completed 92 of 159 passes for 1,045 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He has also rushed for 163 yards and three TDs on 59 carries.

Junior running back Cole Thurman has carried the ball 123 times for 567 yards and four touchdowns, and has hauled in 11 passes for 46 yards and a TD. Thurman played a major role in the Crusaders’ victory over the Wildcats last season, as his second-effort running helped set up the Coghlin (correct) game winner. Cole finished with 73 yards rushing on 18 carries.

Archbishop Moeller’s other offensive weapons include Eric Wills (21 receptions for 275 yards and a touchdown), tight end and Michigan State recruit Matt Dotson (10 receptions for 186 yards and three TDs), and receiver R.J. Khayo (32 receptions for 402 yards and three touchdowns, and a 98-yard kickoff return).

CAT CLAWS: Saint Ignatius enters Memorial Stadium having outscored its first seven opponents by a combined score of 277-52. The Cats have won the first quarter

Eddie Dwyer’s Corner: Moeller Previewby a combined margin of 94-7.

Coach Kyle’s team has outrushed the opposition,1,726 yards to 448 yards and has won the passing yards battle through seven games, 899 to 479.

Saint Ignatius’ dynamic 1-2 punch of senior tailback Jimmy Andrews (508 yards and 6 TDs on 73 carries) and junior tailback Mark Bobinski (504 yards and 11 TDs on 81 carries) have keyed the Wildcats’ offense. They operate behind one of the biggest and best offensive lines Ohio has to offer.

Senior quarterback Patrick Ryan has completed 61 of 102 passes for 773 yards and 5 touchdowns, and has rushed for 226 yards and 3 TDs. Senior wide receiver Travis Pot has 13 receptions for 202 yards and a touchdown, and he also scored a key touchdown off a reverse in last weekend’s 34-17 victory at GlenOak.

Junior wide receiver Connor Kennedy has turned seven receptions into 133 yards and two touchdowns, and senior tight end James Leyden, who is also an outstanding linebacker, has 10 receptions for 115 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Saint Ignatius is led by its big game-tested veteran front of line-men and linebackers. Showing the way are senior defensive end Mike Chime (28 tackles, including 12.5 for -minus 45 yards) and senior linebacker/captain Adam Shibley with 26 stops that include 7.5 tackles for -minus 32 yards. Keep in mind that in three of the Cats’ seven games the starters didn’t play a full two quarters.

The Wildcats’ kicking/punting game is highly respected around Northeast Ohio, as junior Matthew Trickett, who doubles as a defensive standout for Coach Mike McLaughlin’s record seven-time state champion Soccer Program, is 6-for-8 on his field goals with a long of 43 yards. Senior Colin Goodfellow, an All-Ohio honoree last season, has consistently boomed his kickoffs deep into the end zone and has punted seven times for a 43-yard average.

FROM COACH KYLE: “When you picture Moeller, Xavier and Elder, they’re tough Catholic School programs with tradition. That’s a given. So they’re always intense games.

“When you look at the scores, I think what shocked a lot of people all over the state was that Cincinnati La Salle put up big numbers on Moeller. La Salle hit some big passes and they certainly have athletes. Looking at the film, there were a couple of La Salle receivers who were really outstanding and were able to break it and go. That put Moeller behind early and it kind of snowballed a little bit.

“As they look at us, we’ve been running the ball really well and what are they going to try to take away? Maybe they’ll try to take away the running game, but now they have to be concerned about the passing. We’ve been working on the passing game and we have confidence that if that’s what we’re given, we’ll go after it. But we’ll see what they decide to do.

“Here we are at the eighth game and all along we’ve strived to be balanced. The teams we have left (Moeller, St. Xavier and St. Edward) are physical teams that will certainly be ready to handle the run. If we can execute it, great. But if not, I’m pretty confident that we can throw.”

COACH KYLE ON HIS DEFENSIVE MEN UP FRONT: “Coming into the year, as we talked about, we’re pretty experienced there with Joe Gibbons, Pat Viancourt, Mike Czaja and Mike Chime, those guys played a lot last year. They just got stronger and their technique has gotten better.

“We’ve asked a lot from them this year and we’ll continue to do that. Look at the statistics, they’ve been very good. Mike Czaja has some height (6-foot-4), but the other guys are about six-foot, six-foot-one. But they’re strong and have good technique, and that’s what wins today and allows the linebackers to run pretty free.”

SIBN!: If you can’t make it down to Otterbein University on Friday night, senior Brendan DeVenney and junior Matt MacKenzie will bring it to you live over the Saint Ignatius Broadcast Network.

We’ll see you at Wasmer Field tonight for the Freshmen Blue Football Game versus the Bedford Bearcats at 6 bells, Thursday night on the pitch at Wasmer Field for the JV and Varsity Soccer matches versus Twinsburg, and Friday night at Otterbein University’s Memorial Stadium.

Have a safe and great week and weekend, and All of the Best to the Cleveland Indians, aka my Fighting Franconas, who I know are giving my late father, Jim, plenty to smile about from the best seat anyone could hope for.

Eddie Dwyer’s Corner: GlenOak RecapBy Eddie DwyerJimmy Andrews’ powerful and authoritative 7-yard touchdown run seals

the Wildcats’ sixth victory in seven games this season as Saint Ignatius wins the first of a demanding four-game stretch.

Hall of Fame Head Coach Chuck Kyle ‘69 will now prepare his Cats for next Friday’s matchup with the Fighting Crusaders of Cincinnati Archbish-op Moeller High School. The kickoff from Otterbein University’s Memorial Stadium will be 7 PM. Archbishop Moeller sits at 3-4.

From there, Saint Ignatius will travel to Cincinnati St. Xavier for a 2 PM encounter with the Bombers on October 22, and will close its regular season on October 29 versus longtime West Side rival St. Edward at the Browns’ FirstEnergy Stadium. The kickoff will be 6 PM.

At GlenOak Stadium on the impressive campus of GlenOak High School in Northeast Canton, Ohio: Saint Ignatius’ tough and talented senior tailback Jimmy Andrews said the Golden Eagles of GlenOak knew that the Wildcats wanted to run the football during what was a Friday night headlin-er between two programs striving for a playoff spot in Division I, Region 1.

While that ground attack wasn’t always available in the early going, Saint Ignatius stuck with its balanced game plan offensively and went on to even-tually wear down the Golden Eagles of GlenOak, 34-17, on Bob Commings Field.

In what was the first encounter on the gridiron between the Wildcats and the Golden Eagles, veteran Offensive Coordinator Nick Restifo watched his Cats strike first through the air, a 25-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Patrick Ryan that hit junior wide receiver Connor Kennedy in stride with 8 minutes and 44 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Gifted junior Matthew Trickett kicked the extra point in capping the six-play, 39-yard drive.

After GlenOak’s Dean Sarris made it a 7-3 game by hitting on a 34-yard field goal, the ‘Cats marched 68 yards in seven plays. Tough as nails junior tailback Mark Bobinski scored on a 4-yard run and Trickett’s ensuing PAT pushed Saint Ignatius’ leadki to 14-3 with 8:05 left in the first half.

Refusing to fold, the Golden Eagles (now 4-3) responded with a 48-yard touchdown run by their standout tailback Elijah Ladson. Sarris’ extra point cut the deficit to 14-10 with 5 minutes to go in the half. Ladson, who combines power with quick feet and exceptional vision, led all rushers with 115 yards on 22 carries.

The Wildcats, who had to overcome three turnovers, recaptured the momentum by scoring 10 points in the final 31 seconds of the first half - 17-yard run touchdown run by senior wide receiver Travis Pot, another extra point by Trickett and an 18-yard field goal by Trickett.

Pot’s touchdown came off a reverse that saw Andrews take a handoff from Ryan, run to the right side and without hesitation hand the pigskin off to Travis, who came around from his spot at wide receiver and beat the pursuit into the left corner of the end zone.

Andrews said the touchdown off the reverse was the same scoring play that he, Wildcats All-Ohio quarterback Dennis Grosel ‘16 and All-Ohio wide receiver Jack Cook ‘16 pulled off in the St. Edward game at Lakewood Stadium on Halloween of last year.

Trickett’s 18-yard field goal, which came with 2 seconds remaining in the first half and extended the ‘Cats’ lead to 24-10, was set up when GlenOak fumbled the kickoff following Pot’s TD and senior linebacker Ben Delhees recovered the ball. The fumble was caused by a jarring hit from senior

defensive lineman Michael Czaja, a key member of the kickoff team.

The second half saw Trickett’s 43-yard field goal give Saint Ignatius a 17-point lead with 8:58 to go in the third quarter, only to see GlenOak make a game of it again courtesy of a 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback J.J. Olivera to wide receiver Daiquan Johnson and an-other PAT by Sarris with 4:37 left in the third quarter.

Olivera’s scoring toss saw him hand the ball off Ladson, who faked like he was running up the middle, turned and lateralled the ball back to Olivera.

Saint Ignatius would seal the deal, however, when Andrews swept right, cut inside, stood up a linebacker with a telling blow, bounced away and into the end zone with 5:11 remaining to be played.

“A lot of things weren’t open to begin with,” said Andrews of Saint Ignatius’ ground game early on. “But in the second half, the O-Line was doing a great job, Mark (Bobinski) was doing a great job and things started to open up for us. I was getting in the end zone on that play,” Jimmy said of his 7-yard TD clincher. “I was just trying to run him over and get a few more yards, but he ended up falling off and I got into the end zone.

“This wasn’t the prettiest win, but we’ll have an intense week of practice and be ready for Moeller,” guaranteed Andrews, who is as classy a young man as you will find.

In summing up the keys to victory on Friday night under a fall moon in Northeast Ohio, you have to tip your cap to Wildcats senior running back Nicholas Kilbane, who consistently gave Saint Ignatius solid field position by returning four kickoffs for a total of 113 yards.

SOME OTHER NUMBERS TO CHEW ON: Bobinski rushed for 93 yards on 18 carries, Andrews carried the ball 16 times for 84 yards and senior wide receiver Mike Lehto totaled 93 yards on four receptions.

The Wildcats had 23 first downs to GlenOak’s 10, outrushed the Golden Eagles, 197-132, and won the passing game, 164 yards to 136.

FROM COACH KYLE: “It was an important game for them,” Coach Kyle said of the fire the Golden Eagles brought to Friday night’s matchup. “Last week, they were disappointed (a 35-10 loss to Massillon Jackson) when Jackson jumped on them. We knew they were going to be a good running team and then the quarterback (Olivera) does a little double pass to a tall receiver.

“We’ve been running the ball pretty well.,” Coach Kyle continued. “We just had to be patient with it, see what they were doing (defensively), make the adjustments and find the seams. Once we started finding the seams, we were fine. If you look at the special teams with Nick Kilbane, that was a big factor. We knew they were going to angle it (the kickoffs) and we returned it to like the 40-yard line, truly that was huge.

“But three turnovers, we can’t be doing that.”

Eddie Dwyer’s Corner: A History of Wildcats FootballBy Eddie DwyerCleveland, Ohio - On September 11, 2015, the Saint Ignatius Wildcats added

another milestone to their illustrious football legacy by playing their 1,000th game.Coach Chuck Kyle’s Wildcats, scoring all of their points in the first half, defeated

the Valley Forge Patriots, 41-0, on Byers Field in Parma’s Robert. M. Boulton Stadium.

Although the early years of Saint Ignatius football were not laden with the success Wildcats faithful have grown accustom to, the man who put the football program on the local map was Mr. Ralph Vince, a graduate of Martins Ferry High School and Washington & Jefferson University who studied law at Western Reserve University.

The astute and eloquent Coach Vince guided his Golden Tornado, as Saint Igna-tius was known then, to a City Championship in 1925, a 15-game winning streak and an overall record of 29-6 from 1923 through 1926. Those 29 victories included a City Runner-Up finish in 1926 and 19 shutouts. Coach Vince’s legendary 1925 team yielded just 25 points all season and compiled 25 consecutive shutout quarters.

In 1925 and 1926, the Golden Tornado posted 8-1 seasons.Although the makeup of Ohio High School Football changed dramatically

in 1972 with the birth of the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Harbin Postseason Computer Playoffs, Saint Ignatius continued to enjoy success on the area gridirons.

And directing a huge portion of those winning ways were Saint Ignatius Hall of Fame inductees, Coaches Mr. John J. Wirtz and Mr. Paul Nemec.

From 1951 through 1970, Coach Wirtz led his Wildcats to four City Cham-pionships and an overall mark of 146-40-6. Coach Wirtz put together one of the greatest teams in the history of area high school football - the 10-0 Hall of Fame City Champion Wildcats of 1964.

Behind one of the most storied all-around athletes ever to come out of Ohio - senior quarterback/safety Brian Dowling - Saint Ignatius capped its dominant ‘64 season with a 48-6 victory over Benedictine in the annual Thanksgiving Morning City Championship Charity Game at old Municipal Stadium. A crowd of 41,183 witnessed the Wildcats’ dominance, as on the second play from scrimmage Dowling called his own number and rambled 71 yards for a touchdown.

Dowling’s athletic careers at Saint Ignatius and Yale were so legendary that he became a regular character, “B.D.,” in the Doonesbury Comic Strip.

Coach Nemec, who succeeded Coach Wirtz, also produced four City Champion-ships. In 1972 and 1973, Coach Nemec’s Wildcats finished 9-1. Paul put together an overall record at Saint Ignatius of 42-16-2.

Prior to Coach Wirtz and Coach Nemec, Coach Fred George compiled a record of 19-6-3 and won two City Titles while directing Wildcats football from 1948

through 1950.As impressive as the records of Coach Vince, Coach Wirtz, Coach Nemec and

Coach George teams were, Saint Ignatius Football would reach a whole new level of state and national recognition under one of Coach Wirtz’s All-City tailbacks - Hall of Fame Coach Mr. Chuck Kyle.

Taking over his alma mater’s football program in 1983, Coach Kyle has set a standard that most high school coaches can only dream about.

Saint Ignatius had never qualified for the OHSAA playoffs until 1988, when Coach Kyle began what is one of the greatest runs not only in football-rich Ohio, but the entire nation.

From his 14-0 Division I State Championship Team of 1988 came a string of an Ohio-best 11 big-school state football championships, including a record five row from 1991 through 1995. The ‘Cats were state runners-up 1996.

The most successful coach in Cleveland area high school football and the most successful Division I coach in Northeast Ohio with 321 career victories entering the 2016 season, Coach Kyle has also guided the Wildcats to National Champion-ships in 1989, 1993 and 1995, and a National Runner-Up in 2008.

The ‘Cats enter 2016 seeking their 27th OHSAA playoff appearance. In what is one of this seasoned reporter’s fondest memories in covering and

reporting on Coach Kyle’s teams for The Plain Dealer came moments after the dramatic 10-7 victory over Cincinnati Princeton in the Division I 1988 State Championship Game at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, which produced Saint Ignatius’ first undefeated and untied season since 1964.

In the ‘Cats’ locker room at Ohio Stadium, Coach Kyle, while celebrating the dramatic goal-line stand that sealed the victory, lifted up his blue-and-gold sweater and pulled out two small gold footballs linked to a chain.

“They’re from my grandfather’s letter sweater when he played on a state championship team in Alabama in 1918 and from my dad’s letter-sweater when he competed on a state-championship team in Indiana in 1937,” Coach Kyle said. “I think I called on both of them in the end.”

Memorial Stadium underwent a $2.0 million renovation during the summer of 2014 to install a new turf field and new track. Through generous donations from the Clements Foundation, Roush Foundation, the “O” Club and many alumni, Otterbein was able to break ground on this special project a year earlier than expected. Otterbein used three Ohio-based companies for the reno-vation, hiring MSA Architects (offices in Columbus and Cincinnati), The Motz Group (Cincinnati) and Heiberger Paving (Canal Winchester). The Motz Group installed a state-of-the-art Crossflex HP synthetic surface to replace the natural grass, making Otterbein the first school in Central Ohio to feature the hybrid system. In addition, a 13-mil-limeter Stobitan running track system was installed. The $3.2 million grandstand, built on the same site, was dedicated on Sept. 17, 2006 shortly before Otterbein defeated cross-town rival Capital, 17-14, by scoring on its last two possessions of the game. The grandstand was fi-nanced through private funds, raised through the Clements Foundation and the Otterbein “O”Club, both long-time contributors to athletics and other academic programs at Otterbein. The grandstand (with handicap access) seats 2,400, including a section in the middle with 500 stadium chairs, and a press box with an elevator. The stadium also features state-of-the-art locker rooms, a training room, equipment room, and “O” Club room. This venue plays home to the Otterbein football, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and men’s and women’s track and field teams.Photo, text courtesy of the Otterbein Sports Information Dept.
