The economic and social stressesplaced on the human condition takecenter stage in Lanford Wilson'sBalm in Gilead, directed by KimRubinstein, this November in theMandell Weiss Forum Theatre.

About the play: The setting is an all-night coffee shop on New York'supper Broadway, where the riff-raff,the bums, the petty thieves, the lost, the desperate of the big city cometogether. The movement of thekaleidoscopic in effect, a surgingmosaic of overlapping andinterrelating speeches and action asseparate goals and characters areblended together around a commoncenter. At the core of the play areJoe and Darlene, two young peoplewho would seem to have thestrength and the need to transcend the turmoil and ugliness of the life in which they foundthemselves— but are, instead, crushed by it. But their loss is quickly absorbed in themaelstrom, as the others go on desperately seeking the joy and release and purpose inlife which will, most certainly, continue to escape them.
