ABOUT MYSELF

I am Yaokai Wang, a oversea student came from Xiamen, China. I am a currently year 2 student of bachelor of environment major in architecture. I took design environment at year one and design studio earth at year two.

Basically this is a design for culture exchange center located in Herring Island in Melbounre, by achieving the culture exchange center relected to the history, the material of the external wall is changed from heavy to light material, furthermore, my understanding of digital architecture is mostly to be the imaging architecture rather than the real buidling, which means the digital is helping to produce a image of where the it would look like before it was built. The simple word "rendering" appearing in various design software also give a result of digital architecture design.

In current stage, digital architecture would be not familiar with me because i only used google sketch to create a digital model for the building twice before and did not render them into the stage i expect, and i used hand drawing to make the elevation, section and plan with the material texture rather than use AutoCAD. On the other hand, i know that Rhino is a software wokring in three dimention design and could provide the perspective view of the design which we would preview the project all the time in different angel.Photoshop is helpful when i want to combine two image for example the building the site, or adding the visitors or the users of the building. 1

Taipei 101 Tower / C.Y. Lee & Partners

Design FeatureThe design of Taipei 101 borrows heavily from Chinese culture. Both the building's interior and exterior incorporate the Chinese pagoda form and the shape of bamboo flowers. The lucky number eight, which means blooming or success, is represented by the eight clearly delineated exterior sections of the building.

Earthquake SafetyDesigning a building this large presented unique challenges because Twaiwan is subject to typhoons and earthquakes. To counter movement, a tuned mass damper system has been incorporated into the structure. The 800-metric ton (1,764,000 lbs.), spherical steel mass is located on level 88 and is visible from the restaurant and observation decks. The system transfers the energy from the building to the swinging sphere, providing a stabilizing force. Why do I like itThis building could be considered as a art in the local society, by borrowing the idea of Chinese pagoda and the bamboo flowers, and also the lucky numbers. 101 has succesfully achieve the social norm and architecture norm together which it has combined different use of the space, earthquake safety issue, world's fastest elevator from Toshiba, external wall firework system. As the landmark of the Taipei city, it represent the feature of becoming better and better and also a sign of the live for the local habitants. It was also the world's tallest buidling before the Burj Dubai was built.

Critical AnalysisAs a common disadvantage fo using the glass curtain, this skyscraper produce light polutions to the surrounding areas, at the same time produce a large area of the shadow, however, as the sun move from east to the west, the shadowing area would not be the same place for too long. The block looking conponent of the upper body of the building seens too regular, which strongly follow the original bamboo idea but leck of the design in the modernism period.

TWO FAVORITE BUILDING

Intro The Chicago Spire was a supertall skyscraper project in Chicago, Illinois, which was abandoned in 2008 with only its foundation work completed. It was mean to be a 115 stories included a hotel and condominiums.

Design & MaterialAs with many of his designs, Calatrava was inspired by themes and designs in nature for the tall, twisting skyscraper. He likened the structure to an imaginary smoke spiral coming from a campfire near the Chicago River lit by Native Americans indigenous to the area, and also related the building's newly designed pinnacle to the "graceful" and "rotating forms" of a snail shell. The reinforce steel structure and the glass curtain which can tell this building belongs to modernism.

Why do I like itThis is totally new and eye attractive to me as the twist spire toward the sky which reflect back to its design as the campfire near the Chicago River. Noticing that the different anglle of the curvy glass curtain, the shining would point to different angel as you dirve pass the building from long distance away, the move of light will create a interesting light pattern.

As the reading says, the architecture could considered as unique union which services the society can be a art. In this case, the building can be treat as a sculpture rather than a building becasue the wholeness appearance.

Computing in ArchitectureThe role of computation in architecture

Computers,by their nature, are superb analytical engines. If correctly program m ed, they can follow a line o f reasoning to its logical conclusion. They will never tire, never make silly arithm etical mistakes, and will gladly search through and correlate facts buried in the endless heaps of inform ation they can store. They will do all that quickly and repeatedly,by following a set of instructions called a program, which tells them in m inute detail how to m anipulate the electrical impulses in their circuits. They can present the results o f these m anipulations in the form most suitable for hum an comprehension: in textual reports, tables of numbers, charts, graphical constructions— even in dynamically changing images and sounds. But while they can follow instructions precisely and faultlessly, com puters are totally incapable o f making up new instructions: they lack any creative abilities or intuition.

Is Computaion is always benifit to use?In this case, computation is used in complecated design process in which human abillity can not afford due to its super ability. They can used in problem analysis, solution synthesis, evaluation and communication. However, computation is just a helping tool when architect achieving targets, not relying on the conputation, because architecture is mean to be solving multiple problem including shading, space management, lighting design, sustainability and so on. If architect too rely on conputation then they will loss the ability of problem solving themselves which is a disadvantage of over using conputation.

Changing design methodAfter read the 'Architecture in the Digital Age', I understand the method of the design and the design outcomes was effected by the digital techiniques. For example, the non-linear design would be a significant sign, non-linear is different to control by designed with computation, nevertheless the non-linear product and design is a sign of modern era where non-linear can be found all the place, the car, cellphones, airplane, in the house and almost everywhere. Lots of designer are getting used with the digital technique, also the benefit of digital design can be detected in fabrication, in order to make every product form flow line production to be unique, they need the digital model so that the process can be done otherwise the product is not going to be the same.

Rotating skyscraper, Moscow

Da Vinci Tower, Dubai

Two examples of Dynamic ArchitectureThese two dynamic architecture are produced by David Fisher Architect, as the term dynamic architecture the building can rotate in every individual level, this due to the advantage of the digital techique. By changing the input of the system, they would give you the different outcome as the different rotating level and different rotating angle.

On the other hand, the design was forcusing on using the technique to produce the changing pattern rather than considering the cultural value as architecture is a piece of art.

Back to the advantage of the computa t ion , these dynamic a rch i tec tu re has ga ined the benefit from the techinique which is producing the matr ix of i ts changing form so the designer can change it again and again in order to communicate with the client to show how does the buidling can be rotated which reflected to one of the multiple roles of computing in architecture. Also, the role of problem sovlving could be used to archieve the different target with out redoing all the process but just changing the input.

Paremetric ProjectGalaxy Soho Bei j ing / Zaha Hadid

MetaballThe SOHO shopping center was basically using the metaball technique.

AdvantageMetaball technique is useful in create a conbination space between multiple space as the original ideas coming from the water drop or modelling the cells in biography which is a part of conputer graphics. The number slide in grasshopper can easily changed to create di fferent numbers of the conponent and the size of them. Again, the advantage of metaball technique allows the architect to reproduce the model in different outcome in a sort period because of the computation characteristics.

DisadvantageHowever, as metaball create the different space connect by little part of the body, the users would have a chance to travel a long distance in order to get to the certain place due to the space is actually far away between.Thinking in design aspect, the appearance is more attractive when you looking from the sky rather then on the ground, but the users inside might fine a interesting looking by the curves in different level.

The Serpentine Gallery / Alvaro Size

Waffle GridThe Serpentine Gallery was built and designed by the waffle grid technique which can be considered as the structure technique.

AdvantageBy using this technique, the architect can produce a large span structure due to the stability of the waffle structure and this particular techinique can make the wall system and roof system unique as a one. Therefore, i t c a n b e c o n s i d e r e d a s environmental friendly because it save resources and materials to build, and lighting of the interior space is easy to get and the ventilation can go through the space between the the hole.

DisadvantageThis structure is too simple to maintain in a long period of time, which means it might be abandoned by the movement of how people thinking if this is a good design to continuous in long term period. Some people might say this is not beauty because it is too regular.

Looking back of the previous work

In this stage, parametric means more to me and become more interesting because it can help me to create something I have never think about by using conputation especially Rhinoceros. By using the rendering, i would test myself if i achieve the shadowing target that i thought i could create, after i changing the input, either the length of the angle i would somehow achieve the target by the program which is not possible for my imagination could achieve.Sometime there is nothing in my mind to create something new, i can start play with the conponent in grasshopper, to see if anything make up randomly is attractive enough to have further development. However, because of limited conponent that i am familiar, the conponent which i had used before is always jump up into the brain so the model seens to be similar. By researching online to learn something new by following the equation that shows online would facing some unknow problem which stop the process, so , in order to learn more, we should be very clearly with the grasshopper define of everyone in order to avoid input error.

Case Study 1.0

What we are interested in

As the Wyndham gateway project is a freeway art, it should be bigger so that the drivers can experience and enjoy the interesting project seens seens they have seem it. In this case, multiple factor can be the design criteria such as: shadow, interesting structure, sound impact., and attractor point. After the group discuss, we are interested in the attractive facade in pattern which can create the interesting shadow inside for the drivers drive pass through it, furthermore, if any other factor could be added in and make it even more attractive to provide multiple sense of feeling are going to be added after the first approach.

GH08x_OMA Project

Here is the outcome of the changing number slider to change the density of the three curve conponent in the file that we download from LMS.

By using Air Illustrator to produce linework from baking them from rhino, this work is going to be helpful in the future which can show the steps of design process.

12

Case Study 2.0Galleria Center City / UN StudioBy using the double layer facade in trompe l’oeil pattern of vertical mullions making the building vertually scale-less as the structure provides no hint as to how many stories it contains, the skin of the building provide two different view of the people, as the layer cooperate with computer design of the light pattern change on the sikscreen. During the night , the sikscreen is performancing a wave like movement on the screen plus the color change in stylizad way.Arguement of the Double Layer Facade: the view from inside is a fake one, created by the computer with the purpose of the give people the wrong scale of the real one, it possiblely loss the natural communication between outside and inside of the building.

Above is the picture of the daytime and nighttime, the curvy facade is produced by the parametric design which can be concern as the "pframe" conponent intersect with the loft surface to made the facade with the different layers, which coorperate with the computer lighting control on the panel which made the building both interesting at day and night.

This is the section detail of the panel showing the digital technique that the buildin use is to provide a different view from outside and inside by the screen. Using the screen can achieve the different level of the target because this can provide the sense beyond the simple buildings, as they are solid materials, however, this is interesting in visual aspect

13

Case Study 2.0Aqua Tower / Studio GangThe pattern of the building is target to achieve the biggest possible shading for the occupant, however, the parametric design help them to make more attractive skin on the surface. Also the original idea of the sculpture is from tone of the Great Lakes area. With the help of parametric design, it can be series of the surface changing irrationally by change the slider somehow and easy to make a change.

DisadvantageAlso, this project could be a simpliest parametric design by intersecting loft surface and pframe. To achieve more interesting facade, there are other definition in grasshopper could be used to combine.AdvantageThe external skirting create by the parametric design provide the result in flowing facade.

Matrix

By using the technique of what we used in last week, we start play arround with the shape of the Aqua Tower, bu doing this, we are trying to find the interesting shape so we can cut the building into half as the start point of the gateway project.

The pframe conponent used in this case has to be parallel which each other because it is a building, however, when it became the gateway project, the pframe same be set in a curve instead of the line so that would actually a little bit like the atrractor point.

Mid Semester ReviewWith the help of the previews development, the parametric technique we used to produce this project is the double pframe to create the waffle structure with different density of the frame from one side to another side by the ideas of the three precedent project.

Serpentine Gallery Pavilion (2005) Pushkinsky Cinema (2011)

Aqua Tower (2009)

Firstly, the overall loft shaping is from the matrix of play with Aqua Tower in week 7, we followed by the policy of the horizontal panel would provide the changing speed from quick-slow-quick, and the vertical panel point to the north from denser to less denser in order to block directly sunshine to the drivers eye as a safety consideration, and we extrude those curve into the solid and bloolean each intersept so that after laser cut, they can be jointed together without glue.

Mid Semester ReviewFeedback and ReviewWaffle grid is a structure that have not been so popular in current moment, the reason which it was a good technique is for the commercial consideration which this structure does not spend a lot of money and easy to fabricated in a sort time. However, due to the stage we are, this project has lot more space to develop and some of the criteria dor example the sound impact need to be carefully concerned if that distance between the panel and the car would provide the sound impact. In the design process, we did not give a very clearly how do we achieve this stage by jumping into the outcome.

In the further development in the following week, we are going to reseach more technique and add them into the grasshopper equation, and we already start with the new idea of the overall shape. From the picture of model, it seems to fail the target of shadowing policy so the idea of waffle grid is going to be abandomed, and we are researching in some dynamic technique with the freeway art, because a moving architecture would be very impressive to the drivers who is driving about 100 km/h.
