NFL teams often set a goal of holding

their opponents to 17 points or less

each week, and the Rams have done

just that in each of their four home

games this season and five of six total

    games.

Overall, St. Louis ranks 11th in the

NFL in scoring defense as theyve

given up an average of just 18.8

Coming into their Week 6 game in St.

Louis, the San Diego Chargers were

    averaging 28.0 points and 432.7

yards per game on offense. The

Rams limited San Diego to just 17 points and 287 yards of t

    offense.

KEEPING SCOREThrough six weeks, the Rams have been

one of the NFLs best defenses on third

    downs. Opponents have converted just

33.8 percent of their third downs against St.

Louis, which ranks the Rams fifth in the

    NFL in the category.

The Rams third-down success has been

crucial in each of the teams wins this sea-

son. Last week, San Diegos prolific offense

was 0-of-5 in the first half on third down and

finished the game just 4-of-12 (33.3%).

Three weeks ago, Seattle converted just 4-of-15 on third down (27%)

and was 0-for-6 in the second half. Steve Spagnuolos defense held

    CLUTCH WHEN IT COUNTS

Success on third down is key to anyoffense, and Rams QB Sam

    Bradfords third-down prowess has

been crucial in each of the Rams

    three victories.

In the Rams three wins, Bradford is

    23-of-36 on third down (64%), and 18

of his completions have gone for first

    downs. Hes thrown two touchdowns

and no interceptions in such situations

and has a passer rating of 104.5. Last

    week against San Diego, Bradford

was 7-of-12 for 76 yards on third down and went 4-for-4 for 46 yards

on third down during a key second-quarter touchdown drive.

Bradford has been particularly clutch on third and long. On 3rd-and-

11 or more, the former Heisman trophy winner has completed 10-of-

13 passes, giving him the NFLs fourth best completion percentage

(76.9) in such situations. His 10 completions on 3rd-and-11 or more

have gone for 160 yards. Last week, his 21-yard strike to Mardy

Gilyard on 3rd-and-17 helped keep alive a drive that ended with a

K Josh Brown hit a key 48-yard field goal

in the fourth quarter last week that proved

to be the difference in the Rams win over

San Diego. Long kicks have been a big

part of Browns repertoire. In 2009, he con-

verted six of seven attemps from 50 or

    more yards.

The six 50-yard field goals tied the team

record for most field goals from 50-plus in

a season. Brown previously tied the

record in 2008 after Tony Zendejas set it in

One of the biggest moves the Rams made this offseason was theacquisition of veteran DT Fred Robbins, and the addition of the 11thyear pro has paid early dividents.

Robbins had a sack and three quarterback hits in last weeks winover San Diego. Following the win, teammate Chris Long said theinside push Robbins provided helped Long enjoy a two-sack day aswell. Three weeks ago, Robbins recovered a fumble and had twostops in a win over the Seahawks. In his Rams debut, Robbins

recorded three tackles, one tackle for loss and a sack.

On the season, Robbins has 14 total tackles, including three for loss, six quarterback hits, two sack and two passes defensed.

Robbins came to the Rams after six seasons with the New YorkGiants. During two of those seasons, current Rams Head CoachSteve Spagnuolo was the Giants defensive coordinator. Its no coin-cidence that those two campaigns were perhaps the best of Robbinscareer as he tied his career high with 5.5 sacks in each of those sea-sons and was a Pro Bowl Alternate in 2008. He played a key role inNew Yorks run to their Super Bowl XLII championship.

In June, Rams S Oshiomogho O.J.Atogwe signed a long-term extension withthe Rams that will keep him in St. Louis forthe foreseeable future. That deal camebecause hes shown a knack for makingbig plays in his career. Since becoming afull-time starter in 2006, Atogwe has 39combined forced fumbles and intercep-tions (20 forced fumbles, 19 interceptions),most in the NFL during that time.

Atogwe has 20 career interceptions and 19since the start of 2006. His playmaking ability was key in the Rams win over San Diegoweek. Late in the first quarter, he went up and stole a Philip Rivpass after fighting Malcom Floyd for the ball. DE Chris Long, the second overallpick in the 2008 NFL Draft, hasplayed a key role in a Rams defensethat is among the NFLs top 10 insacks, scoring defense and thirddown defense.

Last week against San Diego, Longturned in his first two-sack perform-ance of the season and his second ofhis career. His other came during his

rookie season when he dropped NewEnglands Matt Cassel twice. Both ofhis sacks against Philip Rivers lastweek led to Chargers punts.

Long now has 2.5 sacks on the season and has continually gottenafter opposing quarterbacks. He leads the Rams with six quarterbackpressures and eight quarterback hits. Sunday at Tampa Bay, Longlooks to record consecutive games with two or more sacks for thefirst time in his career.

    LONG ON TALENT

LB Larry Grants first year as an NFL

starter has been a productive one,

    and the Ramsstarting weakside line-

    backer was particularly impactful last

week in the teams win over San

    Diego.

Grant, who entered the game with

one career sack, logged two against

the Chargers on an afternoon in

which the Rams dropped PhilipRivers seven times. Grant was one of

three Rams to have 2.0 sacks last

week, joining DEs Chris Long and

James Hall. In addition to his two

sacks, Grant had four tackles, including one for loss.

On the season, the former Ohio State Buckeye has 18 tackles

two forced fumbles to go along with his two sacks.

    NOT TAKEN FOR GRANT-ED

The Rams defense has stood its ground when it counts this sea

as evidenced by the teams defensive statistics in the red zone.

Last week against San Diego, the Chargers drove into St. Louis

zone in the fourth quarter with the Rams clinging to a seven-p

lead. A San Diego penalty, followed by a James Hall sack forced

Chargers to try a field goal, which Hall blocked. The red zone s

proved key in the three-point St. Louis victory.

On the season, St. Louis is tied for sixth in the NFL in red z

defense on the year. Opponents have scored touchdowns on

38.9 percent of their drives inside the St. Louis 20-yard line. Du

a four-game stretch from Weeks 2-5, the Rams held opponents w

out a touchdown on five consecutive trips to their red zone. T

streak came to an end in Week 5 at Detroit.

In all, the Rams have given up just 68 points on 18 possessions

    their opponents inside their 20.

RED LIGHT IN THE RED ZONE

S Oshiomogho Atogwe and LB Larry Grant lead a charge to stop Darren McFadden at the goal

line. The Rams are among the leagues best in red zone defense this season.

After missing three games due to a knee injury, tight end Billy Bajemareturned to the lineup last week and played a key role in the Rams

win over San Diego. He caught three passes for 34 yards, but two ofthose receptions came on third down and kept drives alive.

Primarily utilized as a blocker earlier in his career, Bajema hasbecome a favorite target for Sam Bradford. He has seven catches inthree games this season. He established a new career high with eightgrabs last season, his first year with the Rams.

In addition to Bajema, the Rams got another boost at the tight endposition last week as rookie Michael Hoomanawanui returned froman ankle injury that had kept him out since Week 1.
