Stay At Home Order

Today, we wear a mask and gloves just to buy groceries. We visit with family via Zoom or FaceTime. We even have video doctor appointments. Restaurants, bars, and movie theaters are closed. Most states have some sort of stay at home order, Florida being one of them. Florida is even stopping people entering the state and telling them they must self-quarantine for 14 days (not sure how this is being enforced). Our Governor, Ron DeSantis, issued an Executive Order on April 1st, Executive Order 2020-91, Essential Services and Activities During Covid-19 Emergency. The order went into effect 12:01 AM April 3rd and is to remain in effect through April 30th unless extended by subsequent order. Since the date of this writing is mid-April, I am hoping the order has expired and we are no longer under any restriction. If that is the case, reading the rest of this article is optional. The Governor’s Executive Order states that senior citizens and individuals with underlying medical conditions shall stay at home and take all measures to limit the risk of exposure to Covid-19. In the next section it states that all persons in Florida shall limit their movements and interactions outside of their home to only those necessary to obtain or provide essential services or conduct essential activities. While there is some ambiguity in the order, your Master Board assumed that seniors are also part of all persons in Florida. On April 2nd we issued our Changes to Use of Amenities bulletin. The intent was to comply with the Governor’s order and still maintain some semblance of “normal” life for our residents. The document allowed for the use of our outdoor amenities with restrictions (please refer to the bulletin for the specific restrictions). Basically, the outdoor amenities were to be used for essential exercise only. Being social is not deemed an essential activity. In my opinion, given the circumstances and the nonspecific language in the Executive Order, The Board implemented an excellent plan. However, since we are the most vulnerable demographic, I implore you to ask yourself the following question before partaking in any activity. “Is this activity essential to maintaining my good health?” If the answer is yes, please do the activity and then return home immediately upon completion of said activity. If the answer to the question is no, stay home. The Governor’s definition of essential is very broad. We can’t stop Covid-19 but we can help to slow it down or flatten the curve, as the scientists are asking us to do. By helping to slow it down we will help all of us to be able to resume to normalcy when this crisis is over. No one knows when that will be, but I am sure if we do all we should, the time frame will be upon us more quickly than if we don’t. I understand that it is difficult to remain in your home. You can only read so many books, watch so much television, do so many chores, etc., before suffering from cabin fever. When the order is rescinded or modified, we will all be grateful and happy to get closer to our “normal” retirement living. It could be however that social distancing will remain with us for an extended period.

R emember when we were free to leave our homes whenever we wanted to? We could play golf, have lunch
after golf, go to parties, enjoy spirits in the pub, play hand and foot or bridge in large groups, and gather for the sake of gathering. The newspaper had an entire section devoted to sports. For that matter we could do any essential or non-essential activity we chose to do. No one judged us for going to the grocery store and not taking along hand sanitizer. There was something called sports that we could attend in person or watch on television. Then along came Covid-19, the deadliest virus we have seen in our lifetimes. There have been other viruses such as SARS, the Flu, and the Asian flu that were deadly, but not to the extent of Covid-19. We are now taking precautions that would have been unheard of just a few months ago. The television news stations are devoting practically all their airtime to this virus. It seems like little else in the world matters. There are frequent briefings by the President and the Covid-19 Task Force. These briefings tell us the latest statistics about the virus and advise us what to do to protect ourselves and others from contracting this terrible disease.

H ow has the COVID-19 affected our TBGCC restaurant? Luckily, we have not had anyone’s health
affected by the virus in our close circle. But it has affected us in ways that have changed our everyday routine in every aspect. When we first heard of the changes we would have to make in our workday, we collaborated and put together a plan to accommodate this new way of working, our “new norm.” Not only with the extra attention to sanitation, but how to go from running a fully operational restaurant to running a take-out-only business and, finally, to strictly delivery services. This is something that none of us had done before and we had to remember to take it day by day, changing regularly to meet business demands and change what wasn’t working. We have a group of nine front-of-house staff and seven back-of-house staff, including Chef Russ and myself, who are diligently working daily with a commitment to cleanliness, sanitation, service and quality. We continue to offer new and
exciting menu options as well as keep familiar favorites. We are so blessed to be a part of this community. We have built a strong relationship with you where we depend on
each other. With the uncertainty of these times, it’s nice to know that the membership has a consistent resource for food and a friendly, familiar voice on the line. We care about your well-being and you care about ours. It’s a true testament to the special people who make up TBGCC. While we see hundreds of restaurants closing their doors and their employees not given a choice but forced to end their services with them; here we are given the opportunity to continue to make a living as well as serve our great community. We are grateful to the Board of Directors and management for the opportunity to serve the members here at Tampa Bay Golf and Country Club and would like to thank the generous outpouring of support from all of you to help keep revenue coming in and our staff employed.

‘Nothing As Lovely As A Tree’ by Scott Miller President
F rom the poem, “There is nothing as lovely as a tree,” comes truth, but even the loveliest of trees may cause
problems.
Magnolias The Southern Magnolia has beautiful flowers, is stately, looks great but this broad leaf evergreen isn’t totally evergreen all the time. In spring, many leaves turn yellow and drop. Then appear beautiful flowers that eventually fall and have to be cleaned up. Next the seed pods come and then dry out: The large red seeds show themselves, finally dropping to the ground, also needing to be picked up. However, this isn’t the only problem as magnolias are very susceptible to scale: the small white insect that eats the leaves and turns them a combination of white, yellow, green and colors in between and then they drop to the ground. Yes, there are insecticides that kill the scale but as the tree grows, it becomes almost impossible to spray the tree. It is a beautiful but there are and will be problems if you have one or more in your landscape.
Oaks Another problem tree is our stately oak, be it live oak, pin oak, Shumard oak, red oak, laurel oak or any other type of oak that grows well in the south--all have tap roots and side

shoots that can plug sewers, drain lines, underground lines. They also can tangle with underground utilities and lift sidewalks, roads, driveways and almost anything they can get under. In our area, you almost every year
see oak leaf blister in the spring, depending on the weather being cool and wet. It can become an epidemic at times and infect most of, if not all, its leaves and on surrounding oaks. The leaves turn brown, yellow, and various colors of light green and fall from the oak. But this disease, as the scale, seldom gives permanent damage to the tree.
Alternatives Alternatives to these trees are some that are just as beautiful but a lot less trouble: trees of the holly family such as the Nelly Stevens, Savannah or East Palatka holly, the Japanese blueberry, the Tea Olive, the Redbud and some of the tree forms of shrubs. These trees are easy to shape, one can easily control their size, and don’t shed the pollen of some of the larger trees while still meeting all TBGCC and Pasco County’s tree requirements. The Garden Club of TBGCC has suspended meetings until this virus problem is more under control. May’s meeting, a planning meeting, is canceled; however, should you have an idea of what topics you would like to hear in the 2020–21 year, please contact me for speaker ideas or for your garden problems during this off time. Do You Know Who The First Residents Of Tampa Bay Were? Alligators!
A lligators have been around long before the builder put up the first home in Tampa Bay. We need to respect the fact
that alligators will always be in our community. Occasionally, an alligator may become aggressive or a nuisance and will have to be removed by a licensed trapper. Generally, an alligator may be deemed a nuisance if it is at least four feet in length and the caller has reason to believe it poses a threat to people, pets or property. Contrary to popular belief, nuisance alligators that are trapped are not relocated to remote areas. It is illegal in Florida to relocate a nuisance alligator to another spot in the wild, so the gator has to be killed, euthanized, or put in captivity. Please think twice before requesting to have an alligator removed. The proper procedure to have an alligator removed is to notify our management team, Debi or Seth. They are here to resolve these types of issues. Please DO NOT call FWC (Fish and Wildlife Commission) or the Florida nuisance alligator hotline directly. This just delays the process. Did you know?
