Our class captains for this week are Holly and Blake.

I hope that all of our much loved mothers and grandmothers had an enjoyable and relaxing Mother’s Day.

I also hope that you all enjoyed our picnic and concert last Friday. It was wonderful to see you all and we really appreciated your attendance and support. Thank you Mr Rowlands for organising our picnic and concert.

Thank you also goes to all parents, grandparents and friends who came and supported the students at our Cross Country and Colour Run. Both events were a lot of fun and I was very proud of the student’s efforts. Thank you Mrs Staniforth for organising these events.

Congratulations to all students who participated in last week’s multitude of extra-curricular activities. NAPLAN tests for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, Year 6 students at Dubbo for a robotics and

coding day, 4 Year 11 students at ASPIRE in Dubbo, Cross Country, Colour Run, Premier’s Debating, Mother’s Day Picnic and Mother’s Day Concert. Students are to be commended for the way they participated enthusiastically in all activities. Feedback from community members and excursion facilitators has been outstanding.

I’d like to wish Year 11 the best of luck in their Half-Yearly Examinations which are this week and

remind students in Years 7 to 10 that their exams are in Week 7. In Week 5 all students in Years 7-10 will take part in Study Skills sessions. These will focus on The Study Cycle and Examination Preparation and Techniques. Week 4 gets back to normal after a great week last week that included the Cross Counry, Colour Run & Mother’s Day festivities.

Literacy: Literacy groups will continue this week with reading at the L.

Soundwaves Unit 11, Grammar Unit 11 and the letter ‘Uu’ as our handwriting focus.

Year 1 Maths: This week we will complete unit 6 in our Maths Plus text books. This unit looks at sharing and counting to 100 as well as vertical, horizontal & parallel lines and picture graphs. Last week most students did well in their end of week assessment. Please check your childs results and discuss any errors they may have made to further their understandings. The biggest tip is “to read the question carefully”.

Homework: Please complete contract 10 in your homework book. Also practise your spelling and remember to read aloud and complete your home reading logs. Please try to hand in your reading logs regularly.

With the Athletics carnival just around the corner, Kindy and Year 1/2 students will start learning the field events starting with Shot Put in PE this week.

Have a great week.

Mr R

Welcome to week 4!

Literacy and Numeracy: Our literacy and numeracy rotations will run as usual. We will be focusing on our sight words and using them in sentences.

PDHPE: This week we will be looking at the food group ‘Grains’.

Homework: Contract 10 is due on Friday.

A look back at our week:

We sure were busy last week.

We spent a lot of time in preparation for Mother’s Day. We made beautiful cards, wrote speeches, planted succulents and made chocolates for our mums. Well done to everyone for a wonderful performance at the Mother’s Day Concert. Looking forward to another busy week.

Welcome to Week 4! Week 3 was an incredibly busy week!

I would like to congratulate all Year 3 students on a fantastic effort with the NAPLAN Test last week. You all did your best and we are proud of you for this.

Another congratulations to all 2/3 students who participated in the Cross Country and the Colour Run. I hope you all enjoyed this and I was very proud to see so many of you participating with smiles on your faces! Awesome effort!

Our 2/3 thought for the week this week is; ‘It is not about perfect, it is about effort’. Continue to put in the effort and do your best in all areas of your academic and extra-curricular commitments and you will begin to see your improvements.

Homework this week is Contract 12 for Year 2 and 3. Books went home today with the spelling words inside. This week our Sound Waves books focus on the sound ‘h’ as in ‘house’ and ‘horse’. Please write out these words and have some practice each night at home.

Well done to Elke Cox and Zoe Richard who have been busy reading and have read their way past 75nights! Brilliant effort with your daily reading and keep it up!

A reminder to all students to bring in their daily reading logs regularly and to continue the fantastic effort you have been putting into your reading! Remember reading the newsletter one night is a great idea if you would like a change from story books. Maths: - If any parents/carers would like their child’s Mathletics logins so their child can practice their Maths at home, please just ask your child to let me know and I can print these out and send them home.

Year Three - Please see Mrs Burgess’ news. Writing - I would just like to congratulate all students in 2/3 for continually striving to improve their writing and handwriting. I can truly see the improvements you are making and it is because of your hard-work, so well done and keep up the awesome effort!

It seems May is Birthday month in Year 2/3! Dawson

Packham turned 8 and Izaih Fuller turned 9 on the 14th of

May! We hope that you had an awesome birthday!

A quick note to parents/carers, if your children are

bringing in money to school, please ensure it is in a safe

place and remind the students of the necessity to keep it in

a safe place.

Thank you to all the mums, Grandmothers, aunts and friends who came along to our Mother’s Day picnic and concert. We hope you all had a great time and a wonderful day on Sunday.

Congratulations also to all students who made it to the

Zone Cross Country. Zone Cross Country will be held

this Friday, May 19th in Coolah. Notes for this event

will go out this week, good luck to those students who

will be competing.

SPELLING: This term we are trying a new approach to Spelling and Vocabulary, with a greater link to the Focus on Reading initiative. The students look more closely at the base of a word and how those words are built on to, also we look at alternative words for our list words and what affixes may have been used and what those affixes might mean or do to the meaning of a word. This week’s spelling focus is based around the sound ‘h’ as in house, ‘j’ as in jellyfish, ‘g’ as in giraffe, ‘ge’ as in barge and ‘dge’ as in bridge. Spelling lists went out today and the weekly test will be on Friday. Super spellers for last week were – Maddie, Amelia, Josie, Bonnii, Olivia, Sienna, Jack, Indie, Clare, Milly and Tia.

LITERACY: We are currently looking at descriptive writing in our unit on ‘Narratives’, with a huge focus on

showing the reader rather than telling the reader what is happening or about to

happen. In Focus on Reading lessons we are looking more deeply into ‘Natural Disasters’ in both fiction and non-fiction form and the cause and effects surrounding them.

YEAR THREE MATHS: This week we will continue on with our unit on Multiplication and Division. If the students could, at home, revise their known and new times tables this would aid their learning in this area greatly. They need to know and remember 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 10x and 11x tables.

SCIENCE: We continue on with our new unit on ‘Weathering’ this week in Science. This unit also crosses over into our story writing and Focus on Reading lessons where we look more deeply into ‘Natural Disasters’ and how and why these occur.

HISTORY: Our unit for this term is ‘Early World Exploration’. Here we study the impact that early world travel had on Australia and also how this travel has impacted the development of our fabulous country.

HOMEWORK: Homework went home today, Unit 12

is to be completed and brought back in on Friday.

I hope all Mums and Nans had a wonderful Mother’s Day yesterday and those that were able to join us on Friday enjoyed their afternoon with us. Year 6 students are to be congratulated on the way you represented CCS at the Robotics Day in Dubbo last Tuesday.

The ASPIRE team complemented you all on your manners and positive attitudes that you had on the day. A huge compliment, well done. Year 5 , I want to congratulate you on your positive attitude towards Naplan last week. Well done. A big congratulations to all those students who made it to the next level in Cross Country. Primary Zone

Cross Country will be held this Friday, May 19th in Coolah. Good luck to those students completing. Good luck also to Jyeson, Eli and Ardie who are trialing in Rugby Union tomorrow. SPELLING: Spelling focus for this week will be ‘h’ as in ‘house’ and ‘j’ as in ’jellyfish’. Take time out everyday to revise your words and use them in interesting sentences. If you don’t know what a word means look it up in the dictionary. Congratulations to our 100% spellers from Week 3—Ardie, Maddie, Eli and Taylor. HOMEWORK: Contract 11 needs to be completed and brought back in on Friday or earlier. Have a great week everyone and keep working hard.

Well done to all those students who have been working hard on learning their words at home. We now need to start trying to make sure we use these words in our everyday writing.

YEAR FOUR MATHS: We will complete our unit on mental strategies this week. On Friday we will have a topic test to finish off this unit and review what we have learnt.

SCIENCE: We are continuing our unit on Extreme Weather, and will begin to look closely at cyclones. As a class we have brainstormed questions we want to find out as we explore the topic. For example ‘How and why do they name the cyclones?’ and ‘How are cyclones formed?’

CREATIVE & PRACTICAL ARTS: This week will begin a unit of work around weather. We will create a variety of artworks using a variety of mediums, that represent different weather events.

PDHPE: In PE this week we will commence a unit on Fundamental Movement Skills. PE is on Thursday afternoons and all students are encouraged to bring (not wear) their joggers on that day. A change of clothes that are appropriate for PE can also be brought to school on Thursdays to change into.

HOMEWORK: Students are to complete both pages of Unit 11 and this is due back in on Friday this week. Well done to everyone who hands in their homework every week.

Have a great week.

Whole School Sport with Mrs Staniforth

Coolah Central School Cross Country & Colour Run

Wow, what a beautiful warm and colourful day we had on Thursday for our annual Cross Country and Inaugural Colour Run. It was great to see all our students participate in each of the cross country events and congratulations to all students who placed and now move on to either Zone level for Primary or to North West for Secondary. The notes for each of these carnivals will be out soon. The House points were very close and well done to Liverpool for coming up trumps on the day, followed by Warung and the Cunningham. The afternoon was then full of excitement, anticipation and colour for our Coolah Central Colour Run! Students ran/walked/skipped and jogged around the track and were smothered in colour at various points. It was wonderful to see so many parents, grandparents, carers and community members come and join the students and wallow in colour. I would like to thank the following people for making both our events so successful yesterday: Our students—for their participation and enthusiasm Parents and carers, community members—for their participation and enthusiasm. Staff—for their efforts around the course. Anne & Co—for a great canteen Peter Manning & Jim Golden—for setting up our Cross Country course. Terry Bailey—for helping set up and recover Our Ambos, Sarah and Nathan for always being on call. Coolah Junior Sports, Rugby and Rugby League—for the use of the new PA. REMEMBER *** All sponsorship booklets and money must be handed to the Front Office by Friday May 19th. All online payments will cease then also. It is important that all monies be in by this date as Mrs Curtis and myself will be collating all monies and prizes on Wednesday 24th May.

UNSW Aspire Robotics Day - Year 6

On Tuesday 9th of May, Mrs McMaster, Mrs O’Neill and all of Year 6 attended a Robotics Day

which was put on by the University of NSW Aspire Program. The Aspire Program provides school

students with the opportunity experience some of the things that you can study at University and in

this instance we were lucky to have our amazing instructor Tom Pike teach us about coding and how

to program an Edison Robot.

Students learnt how coding must be very precise and how even the simplest steps must be

programmed, in an entertaining exercise which involved making a sandwich. Some of the results were

hilarious with ingredients ending up on tables and cheese not being unwrapped.

Next we moved on to familiarising ourselves with the Edison Robots. These Robots are programmed

using barcodes and this proved to be great fun experimenting with them.

Finally students were required to create a maze using masking take, straws, foil and their

imaginations. Once this was done students had to work out how to program their robot to complete

the maze. This exercise required students to use collaborative skills as well as problem solving and

higher order thinking. It was fantastic to see what they came up with.

The feedback from Year 6 was that they thoroughly enjoyed the day and the Aspire team commented

on what a wonderful, courteous, engaged and polite group of students Year 6 was. At the end of the

day we were given a class set of Edison Robots for our school to use and I look forward to using them

with other year groups later in the term.

Thank you ASPIRE and UNSW for a fantastic day.
