Principal News with Mr George Frangos

Road Safety Late last year a representative from the Roads and Maritime Services observed student and traffic movement during morning and afternoon school zones. A few concerns

were raised during the observations which I spoke about last year. Everyone should be aware changes to penalties when infringements are committed in school traffic zones. Recent changes by the NSW Government will see seven parking-based offences with harsher punishments when committed in a school zone, with fines increasing by up to 200 per cent.

The changes are:

1. Stopping in intersection - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points. 2. Stop within 20m of intersection (traffic lights) - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school

zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points. 3. Stop within 10m of intersection (no traffic lights) - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points. 4. Stop near bicycle crossing lights - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $439 and 2 demerit points. 5. Obstruct access to ramp/path/passageway - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a penalty of $330 and 2 demerit points. 6. Not parallel park in the direction of travel - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a $330 fine and 2 demerit points. 7. Parallel park close to dividing line - Under the changes if a driver commits this offence in a school zone they will receive a $330 fine and 2 demerit points.

Congratulations to all the students who participated with enthusiasm at the Swimming Carnival on Friday. A great day was had by all. I was particularly pleased with how supportive all our students are of each other’s achievements. A thankyou also to the 7 to 12

students who assisted the younger students in the water so that they could complete their lap of the pool and feel safe. As I mentioned in last week’s newsletter a focus this year will be the continued development of student study skills and the explicit teaching of study skills in the context of specific subjects. The school has subscribed to an online study skills handbook that all students and parents have access to. Details about how to log into

this website are included at the end of the newsletter. Students in Years 7 to 12 will complete some of the individual modules as part of their study skills training. All senior students participated in their first study skills session today. The focus on this session was goal setting and the study cycle. A reminder that interviews with senior students to develop Individual Learning Success Plans will be held on Friday 16th February and Monday 19

th February. Parents are invited to participate

in these interviews and are encouraged to contact the school front office staff to book a suitable time. As always I can be contacted at the school should you

have any concerns.

K—6 News Thankyou to everyone who attended and competed in last Friday’s Swimming Carnival. Although the weather was not so kind to us, in that it was very hot, everyone excelled and provided their House with some great results. SRC nominations, speeches and voting will take place for tomorrow for Year’s 3-6. A number of nomination sheets have been posted on the Primary verandah for students to consider upcoming sport trials this term. Students have been asked to consider carefully what they nominate for, as the expectation is that they will be available and able to attend trials including those held outside of Coolah. Please note that many of the trials involve parents taking or making arrangements for travel to these events. Sport trials this term include: tennis, soccer, basketball, rugby union, rugby league and cricket. The David Peachey/ Russell Richardson carnival is also on this term. Notes for students who have qualified for the Zone Swimming Carnival, held in Binnaway, next Wednesday 21st, will go out this week. Please return all notes by Monday 19th, with travel arrangements made, even if your child is NOT able to attend. We have been invited to participate in the 2018 Schools Netball Cup this year, which will be held in Dunedoo on the same day as the David Peachey/ Russell Richardson carnival. If any students in Years 5 & 6 as well as Years 3 & 4 are interested in being part of a team for this event they need to place their name on the sheet on the Primary verandah. Students cannot play both netball and rugby league on the day so they will need to decide which sport they would prefer to do. If we get enough students that are interested, we will consider sending teams.

‘Teaching Australian History

with loads of music, humour

and fun!’

Wednesday 7th March, 2018

at 1:45pm

K-6

This engaging combination of music, participation and

stories all presented with a wonderful array of costumes, sets and

props—is a great way to both entertain and tweak children’s

interest in Australian History. To Federation and Beyond is a

number of gripping tales of Australia from pre-colonization,

convicts, battlers to our current bush fire fighters and surf

lifesavers.

The cost for this performance is $4.50 per student Kindergarten

to Year 6 on Wednesday March 7th. Please return the note

below to the front office with your payment by Tuesday March 6th as late payments will not be

accepted. _________________________________________________________
