Week 4 Journal This weeks tutorial is an activity about site visit. There are four sites: Eastern Precint Student Centre, Msle Building, Queens College Extention and Ormond Theology Centre Reception. 1. Eastern Precint Student Centre Photo 1 Timber outside the building Photo 2 Timber inside the building This is Eastern Precint Student Centre (Link between Buildings). We can see from photo 1, there are different timber elements. Timber connects the old and new buildings as shown in red circle of photo 1. Solid Spotted Gum is also used externally (Photo 2). It is a suitable material because it can be used inside and out of building, and it is more flexible so it is easier to work with. Inside the building, the pale colours in Hoop Pine of the cellings and walls allows being lightweight in order to build modular construction in larger areas. Spotted Gum joinery allows warmth and continuity in the building.

Week 4 Journal

This week’s tutorial is an activity about site visit. There are four sites: Eastern Precint Student Centre, Msle Building, Queens College Extention and Ormond

Theology Centre Reception.

1. Eastern Precint Student Centre

This is Eastern Precint Student Centre (Link between Buildings). We can see from photo 1, there are different timber elements. Timber connects the old and new

According to photo 3, glass is another important materials that used to link to other buildings. The building is able to get natural lighting from the glass roof. Using

beams to support the glass and link the new and old buildings which the beams structure is strong.

2. Msle Building

The second site is Msle Building. The entry place is build of glass and steel which are able to have a support and a well natural lighting. The inside of building is mass

structure which has steps and wall. It is the same as the first site that used timer linking the old and new buildings. The timer frame allows the building to has

complete enclosure for energy efficiency.

The old building’s wall is used brick and this building is used steel to link the old one

This can protect the wall!

3. Queens College Extention

The red circle shows that Queens College Extention is used timber and beams to support the

building. It is a mass construction.

What I find most interesting is the links to old buildings is used the glass. It is not like site one and site two which used

timber. Glass is more beautiful than the timber.

The building has granite to be used.

4. Ormond Theology Centre Reception

This building is used a larger number of glass in the entry place and the outer wall. This is really a good natural lighting. It will get sunshine and feel warm in the

winter which is good. However, in the summer, this will become a negative side. The floor is

black stone.

Using beams in the outside to support the glass.

The granite is also used.

Finally, Ormond College

It used timber construction and a larger number of beams to support.

The basement has a well drain off water system

This old building which I viewed in four different sites and I find it is build in timber and triangle structure.
