SATURDAY 31ST AUGUST 5pm to 7pm: SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES with ANDREW COLLINS Tonight, Andrew dons his hard hat and high-visibility vest, and digs out his torch, as we head underground.

The first musical treasure to be uncovered, in a dark tunnel where a train has come to a complete stop, is Patrick Doyle’s score to Kenneth Branagh’s 2017 film, Murder on the Orient Express. Also included is Klaus Badelt’s rich and romantic score to the 2003 Guy Pearce vehicle, The Time Machine.

We also follow 007 through the underground tunnels of London as he chases Raoul Silva, all to the urgent Thomas Newman score for the 2012 Bond instalment, Skyfall. 7pm to 10pm: COWAN’S CLASSICS with ROB COWAN Tonight, Rob travels Beyond the Hall of Fame with the help of Holst’s magnificent orchestral suite The Planets. Andrew Litton conducts the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in an assured and colourful performance of Jupiter: The Bringer of Jollity. A youthful Schubert also features as we hear his Symphony No.1, which the composer completed when he was only sixteen years old. Rob also marks the birthday of one of the world’s most celebrated violinists, Itzhak Perlman, who turns 74 today; we hear him alongside the Boston Symphony Orchestra, performing Dvorak’s Romance in F minor. 9pm to 10pm: PERFECT PITCH with KARTHI GNANASEGARAM (4 / 4) Karthi Gnanasegaram presents the final programme in Classic FM’s mini-series celebrating the worlds of sport and classical music. This week, we’re on the rugby pitch as we get closer to the World Cup in Japan. Former England rugby captain Chris Robshaw is one of Karthi’s guests, as he reveals which classic English hymn has him singing along whenever he hears it. We also hear choices from Sam Burgess, who takes us to the cinema for his favourite piece of motivational movie music; Lark Davies, who shares the piece of music that she was named after; and the 2003 World Cup champion coach Sir Clive Woodward, who unpacks the musical secrets behind a winning mentality.

SUNDAY 1ST SEPTEMBER 3pm to 5pm: CHARLOTTE HAWKINS’ YOUNG CLASSICAL STAR SPECIAL To coincide with the start of the new autumn term and students returning to schools across England and Wales, Charlotte presents a Young Classical Star special on Classic FM. Every piece of music in this afternoon’s programme has been performed, conducted or written by a young classical musician, with the line-up including brother-and-sister Sheku and Isata Kanneh-Mason, composer Rebecca Dale and clarinettist Andreas Ottensamer. As well as the young stars of today, we will hear music from the world’s greatest composers. We’ll find out why Joseph Haydn was expelled from school and how Johannes Brahms surprised academics when he collected his honorary doctorate at his graduation. 7pm to 9pm: DAVID MELLOR David presents the final episode of his mini-series focusing on a much-maligned – but much-enjoyed – genre of classical music: Light Music. Tonight, David shines the spotlight on the world of operetta.

Suppe’s Light Cavalry Overture begins tonight’s programme, after which we hear Lehar’s Gold & Silver Waltz. David also plays music from Edward German’s rarely heard operetta Henry VIII and features a great recording of Sigmund Romberg’s Lover Come Back To Me. 9pm to 10pm: EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT CLASSICAL MUSIC with CATHERINE BOTT As many get used to being back to school, Catherine Bott packs her bag full of classical pieces that have been impacted by education. Vivaldi sets the scene with a seasonal change; we’ll hear from Holst, whose first career was in teaching; and Gershwin proves that finishing school isn’t the be all and end all.
