Year 3 CampThursday saw our Year 3 classes head off to camp. They have been eagerly awaiting this adventure and I’m sure will be keen to share stories of their experiences in our next Primary newsletter – so stay tuned.

100% Hats @ Pick UpI’m very proud to report that last week ALL students waiting to be collected by their parents at pick up were wearing their hats. This is a result of persistent reminders, however, as a recognised Cancer Council Sun Safe School, it is our aim to ensure the students do wear their hats when outdoors. Thank you to the parents who actively support this goal.

Looking Forward to Looking Back

As part of our Looking Forward to Looking Back unit, where we look at how technology has changed, 2L has been examining various inventors. A focus on Leonardo da Vinci led us to discover his concern that the ideas in his notebooks might be stolen. Subsequently he developed a special way of writing - ’mirror writing’, starting at the right side of the page and moving to the left. Only when he was writing something intended for other people did he write in the normal direction. As a challenge to our right and left brain crossover skills we honed our abilities writing like Leonardo and checking the results with a mirror.

Boys @ LindisfarneThis term the Year 4 girls have been participating in a friendship and self esteem program called ‘Sugar and Spice’. Whilst the girls have been busy the boys have begun a 4 week program too, entitled ‘Boys @ Lindisfarne’. The activities the boys are participating in are aimed at promoting respect for self and others, strengthening bonds and the development of confidence, teamwork and leadership qualities .As they are currently studying the period of Australian colonisation of the late 1700’s and early 1800’s, in the opening session the boys discussed the concept of total reliance on the land for food and building materials in an alien environment. They discussed the challenges of self-sufficiency and the instances in which personal fate can rely on the assistance and generosity of others. Boys were then placed in teams and asked to picture themselves in this very situation, and presented with the challenge of building miniature slab huts and shelters with whatever came to hand in the bush (back playground.)The results were amazing. We look forward to another 3 s e s s i o n s o f ‘ B o y s @ Lindisfarne’ where we will be jo ined by Mark Payne, Assistant to the School Chaplain.

Facts about Music:Music training can enhance brain function – Brain imaging techniques (MRI) reveal that musical tasks such as sight reading musical scores and playing music activate regions in all four lobes of the brain and parts of the cerebellum. Music is one of the few activities which engage the entire brain.Incorporating music learning into other curriculum areas helps kids learn – A US study of fifth-grade students found that their attitudes to reading improved when music was incorporated into reading instruction. Other studies show that music students are better equipped to grasp maths and science concepts.Playing music improves concentration, memory and ability to express feelings – A 2001 study in Switzerland involving more that 1200 children found that when 3 curriculum classes were replaced with music classes, young children made more rapid developments in speech and learned to read easier. They also learned to like each other more, were less stressed and enjoyed school more.Learning music is good for Australia's social and economic growth – The Australian business community wants children to learn music at school. The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) last year delivered its 'Skills for a Nation: A Blueprint for Improving Training and Education Policy 2007-2017'. Among its fifteen recommendations for improving children's education in the primary years was: 'There should be an opportunity for all students to learn a musical instrument in primary school.'

Preschool Possums

There was great excitement in the Preschool Possum class this week when Sunny’s mum came in to show us what a Thermomix does (Sunny and her friends had been role-playing using a Thermomix in our restaurant). It is an amazing machine. We watched Sunny’s mum measure out the ingredients - we looked at the numbers on the front and counted how long the machine was mixing. We saw how the sugar was combined with the egg white and berries to make a delicious and refreshing sorbet. Then we sat in our restaurant and enjoyed it. What a treat for a Friday. Thanks to Sunny and her mum for this learning opportunity. We welcome all parents to contribute to our preschool program when appropriate. Don’t be shy.

Preschool KoalasThis term we continue our group activities with a focus on numbers, letters, shapes and colours. These learning areas are incorporated into all of our play based learning throughout the year. This way the children will transfer and adapt what they are learning

from one context to another. This term we will build upon that learning with specific exercises and games to enhance the children’s understanding with the outcome of children becoming confident and involved learners.

Information NightsJust a reminder that next week we will be holding the Preschool and Kindergarten Information nights. Kindergarten Information Night is on Monday 28 October at 6:30pm DST and the Preschool Information Night is on Tuesday 29 October at 6:30pm DST. Please RSVP please call 07 5523 1143. Hope you can make it.

Last week Kindergarten leaped into the pool to begin their 3 week swimming program. All students, eager, excited and perhaps a bit nervous, gave their first stoke their best effort. Even the few students who were initially a little anxious showed courage and determination. After a few moments there were proud smiles and confident kicks all around. The Kindergarten Swimming Program is an important part of development and instills confidence and ability in the water. We are already half way through the program, but getting more and more prepared for the upcoming Fun Swimming Carnival on 7 November. Watch out for the Kindergarten swimming super stars.
