Week 2 Term 4, 16th October 2013 Dear Parents, All Australian governments have agreed to work together to implement a new annual national data collection on students with a disability. This data collection is being phased in over a three year period from 2013 – 2015. The governments agree that every child in any Australian school, regardless of his or her circumstances, has the right to a high quality and inclusive education that meets individual needs. Our school has elected to be a part of this information gathering process in the first year of collection so in effect we are in the process of beginning to gather information on our student population for the data collection. The definition of a disability as broadly defined by the Disability Discrimination Act of 1992 is the basis upon which the data collection is gathered. For a brief guide to the Act the link below is useful http://www.humanrights.gov.au/brief-guide-disability- discrimination-act The definition of disability for the purposes of the DDA is total or partial loss of the person's bodily or mental functions total or partial loss of a part of the body the presence in the body of organisms causing disease or illness the presence in the body of organisms capable of causing disease or illness the malfunction, malformation or disfigurement of a part of the person's body a disorder or malfunction that results in the person learning differently from a person without the disorder or malfunction a disorder, illness or disease that affects a person's thought processes, perception of reality, emotions or judgment or that results in disturbed behavior. Schools are required to make reasonable adjustments for students where necessary to enable their access and participation. Adjustments may be made across any or all of the following – Planning, Teaching and Learning, Curriculum, Assessment, Reporting, Extra Curricular activities, Environment and Infrastructure and Resources. At a very simple level this adjustment may be as simple as gaining assistance from a learning support officer in a small group at school. Over the course of the next week, the staff will be sitting down to look at the students in their class to formally record adjustments made for this data gathering process. The process is only as effective as the information that is on hand so we need your assistance. Protecting the privacy and confidentiality of all children and their families is a key priority. Authorised staff at the school will QUOTE OF THE WEEK! ‘If we cannot now end our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity.’ John F. Kennedy.

Week 2 Term 4, 16th October 2013 Dear Parents,

All Australian governments have agreed to work together to implement a new annual national data collection on students

with a disability. This data collection is being phased in over a three year period from 2013 – 2015. The governments agree

that every child in any Australian school, regardless of his or her circumstances, has the right to a high quality and

inclusive education that meets individual needs.

Our school has elected to be a part of this information gathering process in the first year of collection so in effect we are

in the process of beginning to gather information on our student population for the data collection. The definition of a

disability as broadly defined by the Disability Discrimination Act of 1992 is the basis upon which the data collection is

gathered. For a brief guide to the Act the link below is useful http://www.humanrights.gov.au/brief-guide-disability-

discrimination-act

The definition of disability for the purposes of the DDA is

total or partial loss of the person's bodily or mental functions

total or partial loss of a part of the body

the presence in the body of organisms causing disease or illness

the presence in the body of organisms capable of causing disease or illness

the malfunction, malformation or disfigurement of a part of the person's body

a disorder or malfunction that results in the person learning differently from a person without the disorder or

malfunction

a disorder, illness or disease that affects a person's thought processes, perception of reality, emotions or judgment

or that results in disturbed behavior.

Schools are required to make reasonable adjustments for students where necessary to enable their access and

participation. Adjustments may be made across any or all of the following – Planning, Teaching and Learning, Curriculum,

Assessment, Reporting, Extra Curricular activities, Environment and Infrastructure and Resources. At a very simple level

this adjustment may be as simple as gaining assistance from a learning support officer in a small group at school.

Over the course of the next week, the staff will be sitting down to look at the students in their class to formally record

adjustments made for this data gathering process. The process is only as effective as the information that is on hand so

we need your assistance. Protecting the

privacy and confidentiality of all children

and their families is a key priority.

Authorised staff at the school will

DEPUTY’S REPORT

English Results - ICAS Once again congratulations to Kororo students who have performed so well in the International Competitions and Assessments for schools. The following results are for English. Credit: Yr 3: Mikayla H, Georgia K. Indigo- Lily W Yr 4: Cheyenne S, Ali-Rose S Yr 6: Zoe C, Dempsey S Distinction: Jace S High Distinction: Isobel H, Zayn P, Diavi Y High Distinctions place a student in the top 1% of their cohorts and for three of our students to achieve this level is exceptional. All students who took part in the test were given feedback along with the question booklet. Many of them were only a mark or two off achieving a credit so go over your errors and keep trying.

manage the data collection to ensure confidential

information is not disclosed. When data is reported at the

school level by staff and parents, no individual student will

be identified in the survey return submitted by the school.

Please take a few minutes to read the information on the

sheet handed out to your child. If you have any questions

or queries, please do not hesitate to contact me at school.

If you do not wish for information about your child to be

recorded please indicate this on the return sheet. A

survey needs to be returned for each individual student by

Friday 25th October.

Many thanks for your time and consideration.

Selective High School Placements Applications for students seeking selective high school placement for Year 7 in 2015 will be available from 15th October 2013. Most parents are expected to apply online at www.schools.nsw.edu.au/shsplacement. Please contact the school if you have any questions.

FROM THE OFFICE - PRESENTATION DAY

This year’s Presentation Day will be held on Tuesday,

10th December.

At this time of the year we are asking for sponsors from

various businesses in Coffs Harbour to make a donation

which helps with the cost of the prizes for the students.

If you have a business or you would just like to donate as

a family, please let us know at the school office so that we

can include you on our list of sponsors. At this point we

have our special award sponsors but we do need other

donations for the class awards.

The name of your business will be acknowledged on the

back of the Presentation Day Program.

We look forward to hearing from you.

P&C NEWS

Our meeting this week was the last before the Twilight

Fair. There was a lot of discussion and positive

outcomes for this very exciting event coming up.

Firstly we would like to thank the many volunteers who

have already put their hands up but of course we still

need more. If you would like to help please call Anita on

0428 285 232 or send us an email to

[email protected]

We also need a qualified Electrician to check power

leads on the day between the hours of 2-3pm approx.

If you can help please contact the school office and

leave your details.

For the cake stall we will be sending home plates a

week before, so get your recipe books out and start

planning.

Keep selling the Raffle tickets - we have many more

books to sell and there are great prizes are to be won!

Thanks to Kristy Ylinen and Kathy O’Brien who have

volunteered their assistance for the uniform shop on

Wednesday.

FRIDAY, 1ST NOVEMBER FROM 3PM!!!! Be there or be square!!!!

WANTED

Pre loved books, CD’s and DVD’s.

If you have any preloved books to donate

to our Twilight Fair please bring them to

the school office verandah.

Thank you,

Mrs Powley and 1RP

FROM THE FINANCE OFFICE

Just a reminder that if you make a

payment online it must be through the

school website. If you make a payment

through your bank to a BSB and account number it will

be paid to the P&C. It causes much confusion to all and

it may stop your child participating in an event if you

make a payment into the incorrect account. Thanks.
