2013 Results: The Hounds swept the regular-season series 2-0
All-Time Series: The Hounds are 4-1 against the Machine
Last Meeting: The teams met in Charlotte the first week of the 2014 season, and the Machine went home with a 15-8 victory over the Hounds. The visitors lit up backup goaltender Mike Gabel in the opening quarter, pushing the Hounds into a 6-0 hole that they were never able to recover from. The Hounds started to rally back in the second, scoring four goals to make it a 7-4 game at the half, but the Machine again outscored the Hounds 5-4 in the third and 3-0 in the fourth. Marcus Holman (2g, 2a), Peter Baum (3g, 1a) and Kyle Harrison (3g, 1a) lead the Machine with four point each, while Jake Bernhardt added another three goals. The Hounds were led by Ryan Young with two goals and an assist. Machine goalie Scott Rodgers had a phenomenal game, making 23 saves on 31 shots, but
Brian Phipps has since taken over goaltending duties for the team, posting a 3-5 record and averaging 12.69GA since May 10. Hounds starter Adam Ghitelman returned on May 17 and has gone 3-4 with a 13.21GAA.
HOUNDS
Two weeks ago the Hounds dropped a close contest at home against the Rattlers. It was just the second time this season that the Hounds lost at home, the
only other loss coming Week 1 against the Machine. The Hounds again found themselves in an early hole, as the Rattlers used three goals from Justin Turri and two from Jordan Wolf to build up a 10-5 advantage
going into the half. Mike Sawyer tallied back-to-back goals in the third – including a 2-pointer – to get the
Hounds back into the game. Despite a late fourth quarter rally that saw Justin Ward score twice in 20 seconds, the Hounds fell 15-13. The Hounds had a slight advantage at the faceoff X, as Tim Fallon and
Brendan Fowler went 17-30, but John Galloway was strong in cage, finishing with 17 saves on 29 shots. By
comparison, Ghitelman faced 23 shots from the Rattlers.
Players To Watch
Michael Ehrhardt (D) – The rookie looks more comfortable each week, collecting 12 GBs in 5 games.
Ryan Young (A) – Missed the past 2 games due to family commitments, but remains a consistent scoring
threat, averaging 2 points per game.
Mike Chanenchuk (M) – He has quietly tallied at least one point in each of his 5 MLL appearances.
MACHINE
Coming off a six-goal road loss against the Lizards, the Machine in Week 10 got back in the Win column after
topping the Bayhawks 16-14 to secure a regular-season sweep of the defending MLL Champions. After
fighting back from a two-goal deficit in the second half, the Machine took a 14-13 lead on back-to-back goals from Peter Baum with 5:04 remaining in the
game. The Bayhawks’ Matt Mackrides tied things up again three minutes later, but the Machine capped
the victory with goals from Jake Bernhardt and Marcus Holman in the final minutes. Phipps finished
the game with 12 saves on 26 shots, while Eric O’Brien was 10-17 on faceoffs and Robert Dattilo 6-
15 at the X.
Players To Watch
Brian Farrell (D) – Earned Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance against the
Bayhawks. The long pole ranks fourth on the team with 20 groundballs.
Logan Schuss (A) – The team will be leaning on him to step up and fill the void of players in the FIL World
Games.
Dominique Alexander (M) – Has been a consistent contributor to the team, tallying 4 points and 22
groundballs in 9 games this season.
