SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents,

As you know, teachers are in a legal position to strike and beginning April 23rd, they will be in phase one of their job action. This first phase will see teachers reducing some activities like supervision and communications with management but these actions should not directly impact your child.

While there likely will be no direct impact on children in phase one, it is important to know that it will not be business as usual in our schools. Your most important point of contact for your school will remain your classroom teacher and principal as they will have the most current information as the strike progresses.

We appreciate your patience and we will continue to provide system-wide communications through our website, www.surreyschools.ca.

Regards,

Jordan Tinney

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

The first formal report cards for second semester were distributed to students on Wednesday April 16 followed by Parent Teacher Interviews on Thursday April 17. If parents have any questions or concerns about this report or marks please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teachers. As is shown by the number of students recognized on the honour roll lists attached to this news-letter many of our students are excelling in their studies. For others it is not too late to improve their grades. Now is the time for students to continue to focus on their schoolwork and continue to strive to do their best to finish the year with the highest results possible.

A course verification printout of the courses students have selected for the next school year was attached to the report card. Any course change requests should be completed by now as work is well underway to build next year’s timetable. The ability for stu-dents to change their selections once the timetable is built is limited. Students in senior grades should ensure they are aware of any post secondary requirements that necessitate completion of particular courses for their programs of choice. Summer school registration is now open and courses are filling up quickly. Applications are now being accepted at:

https://www.surreyschools.ca/K-12Schools/SummerSchool/Pages/default.aspx

As we come to the end of April the finish to the school year is within sight with only eight weeks of regular classes left. Our grade 12 class is experiencing an even greater sense of excitement as they prepare for an even larger step – graduation and their final farewell to QE and high school! Our Graduation committees are working hard in preparation for the Commencement Ceremonies May 26 and June 27 Dinner Dance/Dry Grad. Our Vice Principals and Counsellors are also working on finalizing the Grad class list for our grade 12’s ensuring students have a grad plan that enables them to graduate in a timely manner (i.e. by August of their grad year). Many graduates are busy applying for and receiving scholarships and I am sure there will be many graduates being recognized over the next few months. For further information regarding graduation requirements, and/or scholarships, and/or information on a particular post-secondary program parents should contact our Counselling and/or Careers Department.

I am looking forward to a very successful term four for all QE students and of course a memorable graduation ceremony on May 26th!

Mr. Michael Jellema

Principal

On Tuesday, April 1st a group of 9 QE After School Peer Tutors, along with 5 staff members were for-tunate enough to attend the Canucks VS NY Rangers hockey game at Rogers Arena. The evening was sponsored and funded by Fortis BC, who have generously pledged their on-going support to our tuto-rial program. Fortis’ goal, on Tuesday, was to give a ‘Thank You’ to the tutors. We had the use of a VIP box – the ‘Sedin Corner’ from which we had a great view of the game. Sadly, the Canucks didn’t win! However, the experience of watching from a VIP box was priceless. Fortis paid for a catered food service, as well as t-shirts, autographed photos of the Sedin twins, hockey cards, stickers and chocolate bars. We even had a visit from ‘Finn’ the mascot!

From Left to Right: Annie Ding, Angela Birdi, Wilson Adhikari, Praneesh Datt, Harjot Gill,

Ritesh Govindu, Ishmum Rahman, Wendy Yu, Krisneil Prakash (kneeling in front).

ARTICLING LAW STUDENT IN A BURNABY LAW FIRM

Have your volunteer experiences shaped who you are today?

“Locally, I volunteered after my undergrad degree at MOSIAC, the Elizabeth Fry

Society and a Correctional Facility. Internationally, I volunteered for NGO and a Com-

monwealth Initiative in India in 2008. These experiences combined with work experi-

ence at a law firm steered me toward becoming a lawyer.”

What are your long-term plans after completing the Bar?

“My long-term plans include developing special practice in the area of im-

migration and family law. I love this profession because it challenges me and al-

lows me to further public good.”

CAREER EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT!

On April 8th, as part of their HACE curriculum, our Grade 8 & 9 students attended a concert style production by Live Different featuring live music, multimedia presentations, and true personal stories about how kindness changes everything. They were put to the challenge to find ways in which they could live different and show care for the people around them. We look forward to seeing the impact of their acts of kindness on the QE community!
