Reading and Writing Review:

Independent and FAMILY Reading Time:

Reading is the most beneficial thing your child can do this summer. We encourage students to read a variety of texts. For example: stories, graphic novels, chapter books, magazines, news articles. Check out this resource to learn how to make reading a family activity for all ages. Computer Program:

Access Imagine Language & Literacy , an adaptive learning program, from your child’s ClassLink account. Click here to get started . Click here for tips and fixes for the program.

Reading and Writing: Ralph Tells a Story by Abby Hanlon

● Watch this video from Ms. Mathison to work on making predictions. ● Writing Response: Ralph used his daily life to tell great stories. What

story could you write based on something that has happened to you? Be sure to include a beginning, middle, and end to your story. Foundational Skill:

Click here to watch a video to learn about digraphs.

Math Review:

This week is a good opportunity to review content from the spring and start strong. To help with this, enjoy some of these

favorites your student may or may not be familiar with already.

This week we will be working on:

● Place Value: Represent three-digit numbers with various models, including base-10 blocks

● Addition: Apply strategies to add two one-digit numbers

Origo at Home:

Click here to take a virtual trip with our district through the Origo at Home option and  hear some tips for navigating the site...or simply follow the steps below and explore:

Click United States at the bottom of the screen.

Select Grade 1 at the bottom of the screen.

Click the turquoise, Week 4 button.

Your child can build fluency with addition and the understanding of place value by engaging in thinking and computational games through First In Math and/or a few of the other selected resources below.

Fluency with First in Math:

➔ Don’t forget: Your child must access First in Math through Clever or ClassLink .

● How Many? (Addition) ● Skip Game (Addition) ● Number Zoo (Addition) ● Skill Set 1, Games 1-3 (Addition and Subtraction)

● Click the link to see how to access this week’s games in First in Math: Summer Week 1 Directions

Extension Opportunities

Fluency Sprints:

● Sprint A ● Sprint B

*Give your first-grader 60 seconds to complete as many as possible. Use the same sprint several times during the week to see their growth!

Fluency Games and Challenges:

❖ Base Ten Path

➢ Roll a die, move a counter, and test your base ten knowledge! Have your child count the total number of blocks they land on and record it on the third page. The first to get 5 in a row wins! Feeling creative? Make your own game board on paper with different base ten amounts up to 120.

■ Here is an Online Die if you need it.

❖ “Headbanz” - Addition Facts ➢ A new spin on the game “Headbanz” where the whole family can get involved with helping your child

learn addition facts. Grab a card, slap it on, and start adding! If you don’t have a third player, person A could hold up two cards.

■ If you are unable to print, you can use playing cards (Jack = 0, Ace = 1).

❖ Mystery Numbers to 120 ➢ Ask your student to figure out your mystery number, 120 or less! For example, “I am thinking of a 3

digit number. I have more than 7 ones, I have 1 ten, and I have one hundred. What could I be?” OR “I have an odd number of ones, I have less than 1 ten, and I have one hundred. What could I be?” Continue, alternating turns.

Summer Learning: Unplugged

Sidewalk Chalk Talk: Grab some sidewalk chalk and enjoy the following activities!

Just like Ralph, we all have a story to tell. Draw a picture on your sidewalk of something that has happened to you. Now orally tell your story, or write it. Don’t forget to use Ralph’s writing tips, and you may even get some chocolate!

Head outside and draw this Open Middle Problem , taking turns to solve. The winner is the one who comes up with the most solutions!

Scavenger Hunts: Do you have what it takes to track down your reading and math target?

Let’s hunt some consonant digraphs through your house, yard, or anywhere you can safely explore.

Ask your child to write down the digraphs you learned about (sh, th, wh, ch).

Next, make a prediction. Which sounds do you think you will find the most of?

Now, start hunting! Find different items that have a consonant digraph. For example: /wh/ for wheel, or /th/ for bathtub.

Was their prediction right?

Ask your student to apply their scavenger skills! Use books, clocks, addresses… anything they can safely investigate to find all of the numbers from the clues below: Click here for a Number Scavenger Hunt !
