WEEDHSAN: Ugu horreyn, Taariikhda no-

Hargeisa, January, 2012 (Weedhsan) –

Somaliland Vice President Abdirahman

A. Ismail officially inaugurated the So-

maliland Business Fair in Hargeisa to

promote entrepreneurship and strengthen

public-private dialogue. The conference

was jointly organized by Somaliland

Business Fair committee and the private

sector including OGF, Dahabshiil, Som-

Cable and others. The five day event is

expected to showcase Somaliland’s grow-

ing private industries and the newest

products available in the local market.

Along with VP Abdirahman A. Ismail,

the opening ceremony was attended by

officials from Commerce, Finance, Fish-

eries, Planning, Livestock Husbandry,

Education, Mayor of Hargeisa, local and

international Businessmen, other foreign

VIPs, MPs of Parliament, officials from

independent organizations and ordinary

citizens.

The event registered one hundred Compa-

nies from Somaliland and the neighboring

Ethiopia and Djibouti. According to the

organizers, 70 percent of the companies

were locally based and they consisted of

start-up to established large corporations.

It was the largest such event to be held in

the country to date. The Chairman of So-

maliland Business Fair (SBF), Mr. Ali

Mohamed Yusuf, briefed the attendees

that the event has been initiated and orga-

nized by group of four youths and he

thanked them for their endeavor.

The Mayor of Hargeisa Eng. Hussein

Mohamud Ji’ir said he was upbeat that

such large Fair took place in Somaliland

and that it was an honor and pleasure for

him that the event was held in Hargeisa.

The CEO of Dahabshiil Mr. Abdirashid

Duale said that his Company remains

ready for the progress of the country. He

added that he was pleased in attending

this Fair and that it was an honor to pre-

sent Dahabshiil products and services to

the public. “Being Dahabshiil, we hail

whatever is useful for the country and we

are interested in investing our country

that is peaceful and needs investment

projects and economy,” he said.

SomCable manager, Mr. Yusuf Hussein

Abdulla also featured that it was notewor-

thy the people and the youth who worked

on the Fair. He said that it showed that

unity and solidarity can create such initia-

tives if people join hands together.

Somaliland Chairman of Chamber of

Commerce Mr. Mohamed Shukri under-

lined that the Business Fair sends clear

message that Somaliland achieved pro-

gress. “I ask the almighty Allah that those

young individuals set good example and

others will follow suit and we welcome

such this initiative” he said.

Somaliland Commerce Minister Mr. Ab-

dirisak Khalif Ahmed speaking at the Fair

highlighted that youth made useful enter-

prises and put forward large Business

Fair. He congratulated the youth, organiz-

ers and the private-public sector. He con-

cluded by stating that the conference will

give all businesses, emerging and estab-

lished, the opportunity to showcase their

products and services to the Somaliland

public.

Finally, Somaliland Vice President Mr.

Abdirahman Abdilahi Ismail said that it is

great honor for the government that such

huge business Fair opens in the country.

He told that Somaliland is more devel-

oped in business and democracy com-

pared to many countries in the region. He

acknowledged that this will open doors

when it comes to Somaliland business. “It

will facilitate trade ties between locals,

regional and international enterprises on

business-to-business levels. The exhibi-

tion showcases Somaliland’s progress and

stability,” he cited. He thanked the youth

that spearheaded the event.

Hargeisa, January 2012, (Weedhsan/SP) –

The European Union (EU) is to provide $30.5

million of funding for projects to rehabilitate,

upgrade and extend Somaliland’s drinking

supply networks in four major towns including

Hargeisa.

Mr Hussein Ahmed Duale, Minister of Water

and Mineral Resources, told local media during

a meeting held in Hargeisa on Monday that

Somalilanders will soon have access to quality

water. He revealed that his Ministry will reha-

bilitate water storage facilities, replace existing

standpipes, increase water yield and acquire

new equipment to improve water quality and

reduce losses.

He said four towns, namely Hargeisa, Burao,

Erigavo and Wajale will benefit from the EU

initiatives. Almost 70 percent ($21.3 million) of

the funds will be allocated for the expansion of

Hargeisa’s water facilities.

In recent years due to rapidly growing popula-

tion and out-dated water infrastructure, Hargei-

sa suffered severe water shortages. The cur-

rent water networks were built by the Chinese

thirty years ago when Hargeisa had a popula-

tion of 150,000. Today Hargeisa is home to

more than 1.2 million people.

Mr Duale said planned works comprise the

creation of reservoirs, dams, treatment facili-

ties and the sinking, expansion and rehabilita-

tion of new and existing wells. He said the

programme aims to improve the lives of ordi-

nary citizens in the four towns and hopes oth-

ers will follow. In Burao, they aim to improve

the quality of water by setting up water chlorin-

ation plants and process. Diarrhoea broke out

several times in Burao and its surroundings

and remains a concern for the authority in

Hargeisa.

He added that in October 2010 he led a team

to the Kenyan capital to meet with donors over

Somaliland’s water shortages. The EU re-

sponded to his plea and this week issued him

an email stating that the European organiza-

tion allocated $30.5 million for the projects.

Mr Duale has an Engineering degree in Petro-

leum Engineering from Oklahoma University

and has worked for well-established corpora-

tions before taking his current portfolio in his

native country. He is considered a hard worker

and is highly respected in Somaliland.

In 2009, the Ministry of health said more peo-

ple were gaining access to clean and proper

sanitation in Somaliland. It showed how 45-50

percent of the Somaliland population had ac-

cess to safe waters compared with with 35

percent in 2000. The department however said

it was not meeting international standards

when it came to quantity. The average safe

water available in the same period was 14-

litres per person per day in the capital and 8-

litres in rural areas. The United Nation recom-

mends 20-litres/person/day.
