grid structure: selecting a grid

‘‘ Gain inspiration from grid structures around you, select one and use it for your layout for your book ‘‘

Page 4: wed/thurs spreads
Page 5: wed/thurs spreads

In this project I was required to find a suitable grid structure which would influence how I would make the layout for this book.

I travelled to many places and found interesting types of grid forms around me.

Here is a selection of photos that I took.

Page 6: wed/thurs spreads

After extensive research I came to the conclusion of chosing Westfield shopping centre as my grid structure prefference for use of my layout in this book.

I chose this place because the forms of grids on the ex-terior and interior is beautiful, yet organized and simple.

taxonomy: sweet mixTaxonomy is the practise of classification.

Our introduction to taxonomy required us to categorise various types of sweets in as many ways possible.

Initially I categorized the sweets using using factors such as shape, size, colour, texture and weight just to name a few. However this then led me to categorize the sweets by more unlikely factors such as how far the sweets can be thrown orwhether or not certain sweets can float on water or not.

We were also tasked to set up axes with each having variables and we would then place the sweets on the axes accordingly which created some interesting patterns and findings.

One of my interestings find-ings was that my class found that the most tastiest sweets were the smaller ones.

Page 15: wed/thurs spreads

Here is an example of one of the taxonomy exercises I did.

This exercise required me to use an axesto categorize the sweets.

I found that by setting rules like these it could help me to categorize items.

visual grammar

Page 18: wed/thurs spreads
Page 19: wed/thurs spreads

The first part of my visual grammar exercises required me to compose grey and white squares on top of a black square.

This exercise was important as it taught me the power of the relationships between shapes, colour and space which are the basic but most important elements of design.

I then continued by playing with other types of colour to experiment with how the positions its focus on the subject and what different contrasts and relationships can be made.

Page 20: wed/thurs spreads
Page 21: wed/thurs spreads

The second part of the visual grammar exercise allowed me to compose a grey line and red dot on a white peice of paper.

The purpose of this exercise was to examine what the abstract images connotations and feelings were giving to the viewer depending on the relationship between the dot and line, the line and paper edges and the dot and the paper edges.

Page 22: wed/thurs spreads

After finishing my last visual grammar exercise I decided to continue the development further in my own time.

In this section I wanted to try different methods to make 1 of the 9 lines stand out amongst the rest.

build a bridge

‘‘ Using limited tools, create a bridge made of straws that can hold a full can of coke over a 1 metre gap ’’

Page 30: wed/thurs spreads
Page 31: wed/thurs spreads

I waws limited to only several items to make a bridge that can hold a full 330cl can over a 1 metre gap.

The items I was limited to were; fine string, knife, pins, and straws.

Page 32: wed/thurs spreads
Page 33: wed/thurs spreads

During the beggining stages of building a bridge I first wanted to create a solid and well balanced tower on ei-ther side of the bridge which will act as the foundations.

It is the most important of the structure as it will bare most of the strain by the can and will also balance the whole structure.

I experimented with different shapes but finally settled-with a pyramid like form.

Page 34: wed/thurs spreads
Page 35: wed/thurs spreads
Page 36: wed/thurs spreads
Page 37: wed/thurs spreads
Page 38: wed/thurs spreads

Despite my belief that us-ing clamps will support the structure I decided to change the design so that it would not use clamps and instead focus on designing a structure that balances the energy to sup-port the can.

‘‘ Create a 3-D type for a quote of your choice ‘‘

Page 46: wed/thurs spreads

We were asked to chose a line from a quote or song lyr-ics and then create a 3-d type out of it.

I chose the quote ‘‘in every walk with nature one recieves more than he seeks.’’

I had the idea of walking around my area for 20 min-utes to inspire me to create my 3-d type based on the quote.

I came up with the idea of recording everything I see on the ground during my journey and assembling these items to create the type.

Page 47: wed/thurs spreads
Page 48: wed/thurs spreads

I started my journey from my home.

My journey would take me from a quiet residential area on towards a busy high street and finally ending up at a park.

I decided to take this journey as it would be interesting to see how my findings vary from contrasting places.

Page 49: wed/thurs spreads
Page 50: wed/thurs spreads
Page 51: wed/thurs spreads

Even if I had not been aware of the area I was in or the buildings surrounding me the items I found on the floor gave me as to what kind of area I was in, and even what recently happened in the area. An example I can give is when I found a dead frog, suggesting there is a pond in the local vicinity.

I was very intrigued upon reflecting on my findings (a selection of examples are above).

Naturally, I found that the items I found on my journey were reflective of the environ-ment it was in.

alter-ego

‘‘ Chose a regular item, then create an alter-ego version of the object ‘‘

Page 56: wed/thurs spreads
Page 57: wed/thurs spreads

As part of my research for this project I decided to do a case study on Muhammad Ali.

He is perhaps a real life ex-ample of having an alter-ego.

Being a fan of Muhammad Ali I have understood that their is more than that meets the eye to his character.

Most of us know him as being an elegant fighter, a world heavy weight champion, and of course an arogant man.

However he is also a man of philosophy, at times the words that come out of his mouth is a thing of beauty and a complete contrast to the man that he is known for in the ring.

Page 58: wed/thurs spreads
Page 59: wed/thurs spreads

After brainstorming I came to the conclusion of using Euro-pean cutlery (fork and knife).

I wanted to incorporate both chopsticks with fork and knifes.

Its a symbol of western and eastern unity and contrast through the language of eating.

‘‘ Make a cnintainer that visu-ally represents clink street ‘‘

Page 67: wed/thurs spreads
Page 68: wed/thurs spreads
Page 69: wed/thurs spreads

During my visit to clink street I found that its physical ap-pearance and ambience is of a similar nature to its history (prison).

I wanted to capture this my taking macro-pics of the area as part of my reearch

Page 70: wed/thurs spreads

Text representation

Originally I wanted to use text to represent all aspects of clink street such as its architecture, physco-geogrpahy, and history.

There is a storng emphasis on light as it shapes how and where the texts silhou-ettes will be shown.

I got this inspiration from the way light falls on clink street due to its high build-ings.

Page 71: wed/thurs spreads
Page 72: wed/thurs spreads

Visual representation

Instead I chose to use sinple images to represent clink street as it is more powerful and communicates all that is clink street.

First idea

My first idea was to modify a compass so that it goes in sync with the area for people to navigate.

The compass would be controlled magnetically and would have symbols repre-senting key places.

Page 81: wed/thurs spreads

Second idea

I thought it would be more practical to have signboards in place both for the un-derground and overground areas.

Inspired by stadiums, I cat-egorized 5 areas around the roundabout.

By making big coloured lamposts it is visually easy to navigate since each clour represents an area thus mak-ing is easy to navigate.

In this case designing a sys-tem that involves bold lines resolting in a destination.
