OFF THE BEATEN PATH A great number of prime fishing spots are completely overlooked by many fly fishermen. These
“secret spots” as they are referred to so often are little gems that usually offer great fishing,
solitude and unmatched scenery along with very little fishing pressure.
A case in point is our own San Joaquin River as it is accessed out of Agnew Meadows where you
will find almost no competition for the eager brookies, rainbows and goldenbow hybrids. The
SJ narrows in this section as it tumbles down from its headwaters making the runs a little faster
and the pockets slightly smaller on average, but the fish are there and lots of them. As a matter
of fact one of my fishing companions after only four hours on the water claimed that he was, “tired of catching fish.” Something I highly doubted.
Tallying up over a hundred fish per angler in four hours on a dry / dropper rig is not a bad
“days” work and makes the one hour uphill trek out a lot easier to contemplate, especially when there is a cold beer at the end of the proverbial rainbow.
So get out there a put a few miles on the wading boots. I don’t think you will regret the effort.

FLY FISHING FAIRE
October 20-21, 2018
Glendale Civic Auditorium
This should be a great event as we’ve already sold about 90% of
the vendor booths, Steven Fernandez and Dave Boyer are lining
up dozens of great fly tiers to occupy the 30 demonstration
tables, guides from all over California and other locales will be
doing presentations, and we’ll have some form of shuttle to
take folks over to the Pasadena Casting Club pond for casting
workshops.
We’ll have something for everyone from the beginner to the
advanced fly fisher. Also as this is our major fundraiser for the
year there will be lots of raffles and silent auctions to get lots of
goodies.

ENDANGERED FISH SHARE WATER TO HELP
TROUT When anglers on the popular Lower Provo River in Utah
noticed an ever-decreasing water level below a diversion they started
wondering what would happen to the trout.
Brian Wimmer leads the Alpine Anglers Trout Unlimited Chapter and
works as a guide on the Provo River. When he and other concerned
anglers noticed fish being trapped in shallow pools on the Provo River
near the end of the canyon they started looking into the issue. Read more - click here

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc at the Boise, Idaho Fly Fishing Faire 2018
Seven individuals from the Long Beach program spent a week in Boise, Idaho at the Fly Fishers
International Fair, August 5-12. Five participants and one volunteer fished the Owyhee River on Monday
and Tuesday. It was challenging but they caught some very large fish. Wednesday, they attended two
workshops. The first was an interesting classroom session entitled “Where Are They and What Are They
Doing?” This was followed by an on-the water “Czech Nymphing” clinic in the afternoon.
