Welcome to the 2016 NMSDC Leadership Awards.

Tonight we honor nine leaders who advocate for minority supplier development and utilization in the global corporate supply chain.

Leadership is not easy to define, but it is an essential element in achieving success and inspiring others to maximize their potential. A leader establishes a vision, sets direction and provides the guidance needed to reach a goal. Leadership is about passion in pursuit of that vision, in service of others, not oneself.

Tonight’s honorees are the epitome of leadership. They meet challenges head on, and help their organizations and others, go from good to great.

Growing and sustaining MBEs is critical to our global economy: MBEscomprise 21% of all U.S. firms and are engines of job creation. Formore than 40 years, NMSDC’s mission has been to certify, develop, connect and advocate for MBEs – and that mission is as relevant todayas ever.

Tonight’s program showcases the corporate executives, supplier diversityprofessionals, minority business owners and network leaders who havemade a significant impact on communities around the country.

Congratulations to the honorees for your dedication, hard work andvision. NMSDC’s national staff, board of directors and 23 affiliatesare thrilled to honor you.

And we give a special “Thank You” to this evening’s co-chairs, GEP and Toyota, our VIP Reception sponsor, Metlife and our media partner, Black Enterprise.

Warmest Regards,

LEADERSHIP INSPIRATION: My inspiration for leadership is the sum of all the amazing traits that the great leaders who have impacted my life embody. Those individuals and the character that they display, inspire me to be better, drive harder, and take the journey, not the race to be the best leader that I can be. I aspire to inspire others the way they inspire me. I aspire to raise other leaders: to always be willing to show my true, authentic self, to reveal my truths and my triumphs, and to never buy into the myth that this journey of becoming my best self is about serving me more than serving others.

INTERESTING FACT: Through life’s circumstances I was afforded the opportunity to raise my siblings into adulthood. This has shaped me in ways no one could understand, and has crafted the woman I am today.

Sustainability department resides within Enterprise Supply Chain. Javette leads Citi’s efforts to ensure the consideration and inclusion of diverse

firms within Citi’s sourcing practices. Additionally, she is responsible for working across the firm with sourcing and business units to align supplier

selection efforts with Citi’s ten-year $100B Climate initiative and five-year Sustainability Strategy.

SERVICE:Javette is an accomplished speaker and often presents on the topic of supply chain sustainability and MWBE diversity and business

development. She is a member of the New York and GA State Bar Associations, former member, NY State Bar Committee on Diversity and

Inclusion, and represents Citi on several Boards. Javette is passionate about her work in supply chain, in particular efforts which allow her

to develop capacity among MWBEs. The opportunity to mentor students currently in the supply chain area or with legal backgrounds who

contemplate different ways to use their legal experience is equally important to her. She continues to support mentoring excellence in both the

legal and supply chain fields.

LEADERSHIP INSPIRATION: My mother. She always pushed me to

aim high and to be the best that I could

be, but only better; to do all that I can,

but even more; and to always remember

that who you say you are is also reflected

by how you treat others. Those themes

are central to who I am and try to be.

some part on a music scholarship as

part of the CAU Philharmonic Society.

Bonnie Nijst President and Chief Executive Officer

ZEESMAN TENURE:Bonnie Nijst is President and CEO of ZEESMAN, an award-winning brand strategy, marketing and design firm, where she brings more than

20 years of experience in communications strategy, sales management, marketing and public relations.

ACCOLADES: Most recently, ZEESMAN received the Winners’ Circle Award at the Southern California Minority Supplier Development Council’s 2015

Supplier of the Year celebration, and in 2013 the Mayor’s Office of Economic and Business Policy named ZEESMAN Minority Professional

Services Firm of the Year. Bonnie has a Bachelor’s Degree in English from the University of Southern California and is a graduate of the

Management Development for Entrepreneurs Program at UCLA Anderson School of Management.

SERVICE:Bonnie currently serves as part of the executive leadership for the NMSDC’s National MBEIC after completing two terms as MBEIC Chair for

the Southern California Minority Supplier Development Council. She is a past president of the National Association of Women Business

Owners – Los Angeles and past vice chair of the NAWBO-LA Foundation. Bonnie is also a past board member for the California Family

Health Council, Barco’s Nightingales Foundation and the League of Women Voters of Los Angeles Education Fund.

LEADERSHIP INSPIRATION: I am incredibly inspired by President Barack Obama. His intellect, grace, sense of humor, ability to inspire others and, most importantly, his willingness to be the person he needs to be to navigate his unique place in history during these very difficult times. That means a willingness to listen, compromise and find common ground, while also having the courage to do the important things that are not always fully appreciated by everyone in the moment. I’m also in awe of the fact that he has managed to accomplish all of this while keeping his family -- a wonderful wife, a strong marriage and two grounded and intelligent daughters – front and center.

INTERESTING FACT: I grew up working in my family’s Indonesian restaurant, first bussing tables at eight, then cooking by age 12. I worked all through high school, college and on weekends during my first couple of jobs after graduation. By the time I stopped at 27, I was bureau manager for a wire service. The experience was an important one and instilled in me a fierce work ethic. It also taught me more about how to deal, hands on, with people and pressure than any business book I’ve read since. The fact is, I’ve yet to find anything more stressful than a roomful of hungry people.
