LADY AURELIA OVERPOWERS MALES IN KING'S STANDBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

Already the first United States-trained horse to earn a Cartier

Award, Lady Aurelia added another eye-catching victory in England June 20 when she overwhelmed older males in the King's Stand Stakes (G1) before a crowd of 44,235 at Royal Ascot.

Lady Aurelia raced prominently in the five-furlong test before delivering a late burst under John Velazquez to separate herself from 16 rivals, registering a three-length victory over last year's King's Stand winner Profitable.

Completing the race in :57.54, Lady Aurelia becomes the first 3-year-old to win the King's Stand since Equiano in 2008 and the first 3-year-old filly to win the race since Dominica in 2002. She runs for Stonestreet Stables, George Bolton, and Peter Leidel.

"You never know (what will happen). This is a group 1 with some of the fastest horses in the world, and to duplicate what she did last year, she is a once-in-a-lifetime horse," said trainer Wesley Ward, who saddled his eighth Royal Ascot winner. "She loves it over here. We look forward to a really big summer and then the Breeders' Cup. The owners are so excited. It is wonderful for American racing."

In her first try against older horses, in this case a field that included older males, Lady Aurelia earned a group stakes win at the Royal Ascot meeting for the second

straight year after taking the 2016 Queen Mary Stakes (G2) against other juvenile fillies.

Bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet, Lady Aurelia was guided to victory Tuesday by Hall of Famer Velazquez, who picked up the mount from an injured Frankie Dettori.

"For me this is a blessing—not to take anything away from Frankie, he's a good friend of mine and I feel really bad for him," Velazquez said. "It was a great feeling. When a horse is travelling so beautifully and responds right away when you

ask, you can't get better than that. She's definitely very fast. To come back here for a second time and do what she did today, she's got to be a special horse."

Sent off at 7-2 in local pools, Lady Aurelia was followed home by Profitable, who just edged group 1-winning 4-year-old filly Marsha for second. Ward suggested that a start in the group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York in August would be next on the agenda for Lady Aurelia.

followed home by last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T) runner-up Lancaster Bomber, a Kentucky-bred son of War Front; and Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) starter Thunder Snow.

Churchill, who defeated Barney Roy in the QIPCO Two Thousand Guineas (G1), finished fourth.

"It means everything to win this—we've had a lot of good milers through our hands, horses like Toronado, Olympic Glory, and Sky Lantern, and when they leave there is a big hole in the yard, so we are frantically searching for the next one," Hannon said. "We thought we had one, and after the Guineas we knew we had one—we just had to get the best out of him."

One race before the King's Stand, Rebel Racing's Rajasinghe scored a head victory over Headway in the Coventry Stakes (G2), a six-furlong test for juveniles. Rajasinghe improved to two for two after winning his debut on the all-weather track at Newcastle May 19 before taking his stakes debut Tuesday.

Rajasinghe is trained by Richard Spencer and was guided to victory by Stevie Donohoe. BH

"I need to sit down with the owners but I would like to go the Nunthorpe Stakes at York with her next," he said, while also suggesting the filly could stay in training for her 4-year-old season. "The owners are sportsmen and sportswomen and I would say that as long as she keeps sound, she will carry on racing."

One race after the King's Stand, Godolphin's Barney Roy secured his first group 1 win in the St James's Palace Stakes for 3-year-olds at one mile. Godolphin took the meet-opening Queen Anne Stakes (G1) Tuesday with Ribchester and the operation went on to celebrate a third time later on the card when Sound And Silence bested stablemate Roussel in the listed Windsor Castle Stakes to head a 1-2 Godolphin finish in that race.

Taken to the outside by James Doyle in the stretch, Richard Hannon-trained Barney Roy surged to a one-length victory in the St James's Palace. He was

RIBCHESTER RUNS TO HIS CLASS IN QUEEN ANNE STAKESBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin operation has been prominent in the headlines recently. At the con-

clusion of the June 20 Queen Anne Stakes (G1) on opening day of Royal Ascot, Ribchester and the royal blue silks were again in racing's spotlight—this time for positive reasons.

A month of tumult for Godolphin took a turn for the better Tuesday as Ribchester struck the front over a furlong out and drew off as his class suggested he would to capture the one-mile Queen Anne by 1 1/4 lengths over Mutakayyef, while American runners Miss Temple City and American Patriot faltered.

The celebration in the winner's enclosure for Sheikh Mohammed's team comes just weeks after tensions within the organization were made public, prompting John Ferguson to resign as chief executive and racing manager at Godolphin. Already a multiple group 1 winner, Ribchester provided some salve when he ran up to his billing as the 11-10 favorite in the 16-horse field, tracking along in fifth in the pack behind pacesetters Toscanini and Dutch Uncle before powering forward under William Buick despite drifting out.

"You've got to hand it to the horse, he's an absolute jockey's dream," Buick said. "It doesn't get much better than this. This is the biggest week for our sport and to wear the royal blue here .... we're all working towards one goal. We're all working to get to the winner's enclosure. That's what Sheikh Mohammed deserves."

Ribchester covered the distance in a track record 1:36.60 over a course rated good to firm, beating Integral's 2014 record time of 1:37.09.

"Look, Ribchester is just an exceptional horse. He has to be the best horse I have ever trained," winning trainer Richard Fahey said.

"He broke the track record here today and that's not being disrespectful to the others, but he is just exceptional.

"William doesn't feel that the tank is empty with him and that he is getting stronger the whole time. The Sussex Stakes (G1) is where he has to go really. I was always hoping that he would stay further but at the moment, I don't need to go further."

Buick also rode Ribchester to win the group 1 Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes at Newbury May 20 and the group 1 Prix du Haras de Fresnay-Le-Buffard-Jacques Le Marois at Deauville last August. Prior to his Lockinge triumph, the 4-year-old bay son of Iffraaj finished third in the Dubai Turf Sponsored By DP World (G1) at Meydan Racecourse March 25. His victory in the Queen Anne makes him the first

Godolphin runner to capture the race since Ramonti prevailed in 2007.

Aidan O'Brien trained Deauville, winner of the Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes (G1T) at Belmont Park last July, got up for third in the Queen Anne. WinStar Farm's homebred grade 1 winner American Patriot never threatened and finished 11th while multiple grade 1 winner Miss Temple City—who was making a start at Royal Ascot for a third straight year—faded after sitting in the first flight behind the early pace makers and hit the wire in 13th.

"They ran fast and she was too sharp today," Graham Motion, trainer of Miss Temple City, posted on his Twitter account after the race. BH

KEENELAND

KEENELAND TWEAKS COMMISSION STRUCTUREBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

For the first time in 30-some years, Keeneland has tweaked the commis-

sion structure for all of its auctions.Beginning with the two-week

September yearling sale, the sales company will charge a minimum $500 commission, a move that will make it more costly for breeders who sell with the Lexington firm.

Keeneland charges a $1,000 entry fee for each horse entered in a sale. Previously, however, that fee would be applied to Keeneland's standard 5% commission for any horse selling up to $20,000. With the new minimum commission, it will cost $500 more to sell a horse than it previously did at Keeneland.

Keeneland vice president of racing and sales Bob Elliston said that the organization had the lowest commission structure among major North American sales companies at the price point of $20,000 and above before the latest adjustment. Keeneland reduced its commission to 4.5% in 2001 and raised

it to 5% in 2011, saving breeders more than $28.8 million during that period, according to the sales company.

"I think it puts us on even footing with other sales companies," Elliston said. "As you might expect, it is a rare situation where a company doesn't change its pricing in over 30 years. So we believe we've invested significantly in the sales pavilion and how we treat our

customers when they come here, and it really didn't merit being the low-cost provider because we think it is an exceptional experience and it helps us pay for our representatives being around the world, attracting buyers to ourselves."

Tweaking the commission rate is the second major change announced by Keeneland for the Sept. 11-23 sale.

Earlier, Keeneland announced it was creating a bonus scheme for yearlings selling during Book 1, which has been re-formatted to be a nighttime session limited to about 200-250 of the most select horses in the sale.

Keeneland said it will award a cash bonus to any Book 1 September yearling sale graduate that wins a grade/group 1 stakes anywhere in the world. The bonus will be split between the seller and buyer. The Lexington sale company will commit $750,000 to the rewards pool for the first year, which will apply to Book 1 graduates of this year and be offered to top-level winners during their 2-year-old and 3-year-old campaigns.

Elliston said the Book 1 bonus scheme is funded through Keeneland's combined resources and the new commission change is unrelated.

"They are two separate items altogether," Elliston said. "What you have to look at is what it costs to sell a horse across the board and when you haven't modified your pricing in our 30 years, we all know our cost level has gone up. The second thing is rewarding those who participate at the highest level and that comes from all the assets of Keeneland. We believe something we should do is incentivize those people and excite those people who play at the highest level, with the bonus program. That comes from Keeneland proceeds and not from changing our commission structure."

Reiley McDonald of Eaton Sales said he supports the Book 1 bonus scheme and that it made sense for Keeneland to revamp its commission structure at this time.

"Keeneland has not had a rate increase in many years, so from a business standpoint it made sense, and now there is a need for funding the new Book 1 bonus scheme," the consignor said. "Sadly part of it falls on the backs of smaller breeders who are breeding horses in the zero to $20,000 range, and will have to pay more than a 5% commission."

Peter O'Callaghan of Woods Edge Farm said the commission restructuring would be more palatable had either the percent charged on buy-backs been lowered or if the Book 1 bonus scheme was spread throughout more of the price points.

"The bonus scheme is great idea but it is coming at a cost," O'Callaghan said. "I thought for a long time they should have had a bonus scheme but I'm certainly not in favor of it being only for Book 1. It appears they are taking from poor Peter to pay rich Paul."

O'Callaghan said he would also like to see a greater percentage of the bonus money going to the buyer rather than the proposed 60%-40% split between seller and buyer.

"Nobody likes it, and I wish that it didn't happen, because it costs you more money to sell horses," said Mark Taylor, sales director for his family's Taylor Made Sales Agency. "We feel for our customers because a lot of the breeders are not making a profit and it is more difficult than ever. But it's not surprising; everything else has gone up in price and I'm sure Keeneland's cost of putting on the show has gone up also.

"Keeneland puts on a hell of a show, and they do everything first class and it's a not-for-profit organization that puts all the money back into the community or for its racing. It's unfortunate but it's just a part of life." BH s Share this story

GOFFS LONDON SALE

DOZEN HORSES CHANGE HANDS AT GOFFS LONDON SALEBy BloodHorse Staff

Topped by the sale of German group 2-placed Lockheed,

Goffs reported a dozen horses sold for gross receipts of £4,525,000 (US$5,776,980) at its fourth London Sale held June 19 at The Orangery, Kensington Palace.

The sale-topper, a 3-year-old son of Exceed and Excel, was purchased for £900,000 (US$1,150,020) by Australian agent Chris McAnulty on behalf of Hong Kong-based owner Henry Cheng Kar Shun. The colt sold by the China Horse Club had been in training with William Haggas and finished second in the Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen Two Thousand Guineas (G2).

McNulty said Lockheed will be gelded and will remain in the United Kingdom several months before being sent to trainer John Size in Hong Kong and raced by the new owner, who was making his first purchase at a European sale.

The average for the sale was £377,083 (US$481,414), with a median of £340,000 (US$434,071).

"We're delighted with the fourth renewal of the London sale," said Goffs CEO Henry Beeby. "We welcomed a huge international audience once again to the Orangery at Kensington Palace, which got Royal Ascot week kicked off in some style. Spirited bidding saw the key statistics advance with average rising by 26% to over £375,000, and the median was up almost 80% to £340,000. These figures speak for themselves and demonstrate the enormous hunger for the quality and class that is offered at the sale."

Leicester City Football Club owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha was leading buyer with six horses bought for £2,050,000 (US$2,617,190), with five of those purchases entered in the Royal Ascot meet that began June 20.

Top purchase by Srivaddhanaprabha, represented in London by SackvilleDonald's Alistair Donald, was listed winner Straight Right, who brought £450,000 (US$574,506) and is scheduled to run in the group 1 Commonwealth Cup June 23 for trainer Christophe Ferland.

"He has been looking to expand his interest in racing for a while and was keen to have greater presence at the Royal meeting," Donald said.

Head of the King Power Group, which operates duty free shops, Srivaddhanaprabha's horses run in the name of Abudiencia Co Ltd, and include the Andrew Balding-trained Beat The Bank, who is scheduled to run in the June 21 Jersey Stakes (G3) at Ascot.

Srivaddhanaprabha's other purchases scheduled to run at Ascot this week are listed Sandringham Handicap prospect Tisbutadream (£400,000; $510,672) from David Elsworth's stable; Twin Star (£260,000; $331,937), the Sheila Lavery-trained gelding who runs in Thursday's listed King George V Handicap; Jessica Harrington's Albany Stakes (G3) hopeful Whitefountainfairy (£300,000; $383,004); and the Michael O'Callaghan-trained listed Queen's Vase (G2) contender Night Of Glory (£340,000; $434,071). CHURCHILL PLANS TO ADD HISTORICAL RACING AT TRACKSIDEBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

Churchill Downs racetrack plans to add a $50—$60 million historical racing venue at its nearby Track-

side training track property, and Churchill Downs Inc. plans to produce those historical racing machines.

At its regular meeting June 20, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission approved an initial plan to add a completely new 85,000-square-foot facility in the Trackside parking lot area that would house 600-650 machines at the planned launch in late summer 2018. Churchill said it would come back to the commission with a more detailed plan at a later date, but Tuesday's approval will allow the company to begin construction this summer.

Perhaps the biggest regulatory point of concern Tuesday is the planned location, as the Churchill facility would be the first in the state not located at the racetrack site. KHRC general counsel John Forgy advised that the location on Churchill Downs property meets the legal standard, noting that there is no requirement that a historical gaming operation be located on property contiguous to the actual racetrack.

Churchill Downs racetrack president Kevin Flanery said the site's games will be produced by parent company Churchill Downs Inc. CDI technology properties already include social gaming company Big Fish Games and advance-deposit wagering site TwinSpires.com, as well as the tote company United Tote. The $50—$60 million project estimate includes development of the games.

Three other Kentucky Thoroughbred tracks already have historical gaming operations. Kentucky Downs and Ellis Park's games are located on site, while Keeneland has a joint venture with the Red Mile on the games located at the Lexington Standardbred track. The state's other Thoroughbred track, Turfway Park, has been looking into adding the games as well.

Historical racing machines offer a customer experience similar to slot machines, but payoffs are pari-mutuel in nature and winning combinations are determined by previously run horse races. Efforts in recent years to add slot machines or casinos in Kentucky have come up short, and there is virtually no chance of casino-type gaming being added anytime soon in the state.

Churchill, which faces competition for the gambling dollar from nearby Indiana riverboat casinos, is ready to move forward with historical racing.

"We've been very deliberate in how we've analyzed historical racing and what it means," Flanery said. "We're in a unique marketplace. We're in the state's largest city. There are a lot of entertainment options, including a lot of opportunities to wager in the city and across the river. We wanted to make sure we did it at a time that we could be competitive with those other options and invest in a way that was significant and made the experience what the guest really wants."

He noted that Churchill is comfortable that Louisville will support historical racing.

"We've looked at the games all along and thought, 'Is it something the customers will enjoy?' We're in the process of developing games that we'll bring back to the commission," Flanery said. "We're comfortable that we can create an experience the customer will enjoy."

Located near the Tennessee border and facing little other gambling competition, Kentucky Downs has enjoyed success with its historical racing. Flanery said while Churchill Downs has more competition, it does have the advantage of being located in a large market. The company also will draw on its knowledge as a casino owner in constructing a top-notch facility.

"When you look at the investment we're making, we understand that we're in a more competitive market than some others," Flanery said. "For us, it's about doing it right, doing it in a way that's responsible for Kentucky horsemen."

Flanery wanted to be conservative in estimates in how much the gaming would add to Churchill purses, but said it would be significant, perhaps 10% or more. The new operation has the support of the Kentucky Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association and the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association/Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders.

Flanery said if the historical gaming facility opens in late summer 2018, purses could benefit as early as

late 2018 (Churchill offers racing in September and November) or the 2019 spring meet.

"Kentucky's racing needs to be competitive year-round at all of the facilities," Flanery said. "When we look at this, we look at it as an opportunity to keep horsemen in Kentucky racing at Churchill Downs and then going to the other facilities; making sure they can make a living in our state."

Churchill has no plans to offer historical gaming until the new facility is ready to launch; there would be no temporary facility. The company expects the surface parking available at the site to meet demands.

Flanery said the addition of the gaming will not impact training operations at Trackside, which he said would continue. Plans call for simulcast wagering to be offered, although Flanery noted that the focus of Churchill's simulcast operations will continue to be on-site, where the track recently invested $16 million in improvements to its second floor where its main simulcast operations are located.

The planned historical racing facility would house two quick-service, walk-up food venues, as well as a bar with seating for 50 and large-format televisions for guests to take in all the best sporting action year-round.

Commissioner Mark Simendinger commended Churchill on the addition of historical racing, saying it would benefit Kentucky racing and horsemen as well as the state. Flanery estimates the project will see 250 construction jobs followed by about 100 full-time, permanent jobs.

KTA/KTOB executive director Chauncey Morris said Churchill's plans are great news for Kentucky racing and breeding.

"We're extremely grateful," Morris said. "Everything Churchill Downs does is always first class. They already have a hugely important footprint on live race dates and the year-round circuit in the state. They're crucial. Anything we can do that innovates that in the Louisville market, which is arguably the most important market in the commonwealth, is hugely important." BH

INJURED ARM FORCES DETTORI TO MISS ROYAL ASCOTBy Bob Kieckhefer

Frankie Dettori will sit out this year's Royal Ascot meeting with an arm injury sustained last week at

Yarmouth, according to a statement from the Italian rider.

Dettori is the leading active rider at Royal Ascot with 56 winners, and was well-subscribed for this year's meeting, with many of his prospective mounts for American trainers.

John Velazquez was named to sub for Dettori aboard American Patriot for trainer Todd Pletcher in Tuesday's Queen Anne Stakes (G1) and for Wesley Ward on Lady Aurelia in the King's Stand Stakes (G1) and Nootka Sound in the Windsor Castle Stakes. Edgar Prado took the reins from Dettori on Ward's Elizabeth Darcy in the Windsor Castle.

"I've been trying so hard to get fit for today but had to accept this morning it wasn't going to happen,"

Dettori said in the statement released by Ascot Racecourse. "I've got to have physio and get it properly looked after, so won't be at Ascot this week. For me that's soul-destroying, as it's the most important week of the year.

"I'll be counting down the days until next year." BHs Share this story

ORDER OF ST GEORGE AIMS FOR SECOND STRAIGHT GOLD CUPBy Bob Kieckhefer

Order of St George is the overwhelming favorite in the sole group 1 event June 22 at Royal As-

cot, The Gold Cup at 2 1/2 miles for 4-year-olds and up.

The 5-year-old son of Galileo, representing owners associated with Coolmore, is odds-on with most of the British bookmakers to reprise his 2016 victory in this set piece on the middle day of the five-day meeting.

The Gold Cup is supported by a pair of group 2 events, the Norfolk Stakes for 2-year-olds at 5 furlongs and the Ribblesdale Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/2 miles. The Hampton Court Stakes (G3), a 1 1/4-mile test for 3-year-olds, completes the pattern races for day.

Order of St George, out of the Gone West mare Another Storm, won last year's Gold Cup by three lengths over soft ground. He was third in the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) at Chantilly Oct. 2 and, just 13 days later, finished fourth in the QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup (G2).

After two preps, the Aidan O'Brien trainee looks in top form for his repeat try.

The opposition has more modest recent credentials. Big Orange has journeyed to Hong Kong and Dubai, earning only minor placings on his best days. The 6-year-old Duke of Marmalade gelding was fourth in the Dubai Gold Cup Sponsored By Al Tayer Motors (G2) on World Cup night and comes to this after a group 3 victory at Sandown.

Sheikhzayedroad and Simple Verse also were prominent in last year's Long Distance Cup and return for this. Fourteen are entered to run.

The rest of the card is intriguing.Once the royal party is settled, the Norfolk Stakes

for 2-year-olds kicks off the day's racing and a Wesley Ward trainee, McErin, heads a big field. The Trappe Shot colt, owned and bred by Waterford Stable, is 1-for-2 in his short career, consisting of an easy win at Keeneland and a close third in the Kentucky Juvenile Stakes at Churchill Downs.

O'Brien held multiple entries in the Norfolk but left in only one, Sioux Nation. The Scat Daddy colt has one

win from four starts and was sixth in a listed race at the Curragh in his most recent outing. O'Brien's son, former jockey and fledgling trainer Joseph O'Brien, will saddle True Blue Moon, a Holy Roman Emperor colt given better reviews by the bookmarkers than Sioux Nation. Another of Aidan O'Brien's offspring, Donnacha O'Brien, is named aboard the gray colt.

Others with early backing include Santry and Havana Grey, each with a two-race winning streak.

In the other group 2, Alluringly, third behind Enable and Rhododendron in the Investec Oaks (G1), returns as a general favorite in the Ribblesdale. The Fastnet Rock filly, trained by Aidan O'Brien for Coolmore, has but a single win to her credit but also ran second to Enable in the Arkle Finance Cheshire Oaks at Chester.

Alluring as the favorite is, many at Ascot will be watching Mori, a Juddmonte Farms homebred daughter of Frankel out of the Oasis Dream mare Midday. That regal breeding couples with two straight wins, but the filly steps up in class for trainer Sir Michael Stoute.

The Ribblesdale also has Coronet, a Dubawi filly trained by John Gosden. The Denford Stud homebred was fifth in the Oaks.

The Hampton Court has another Frankel offspring, Mirage Dancer, a Juddmonte homebred colt who finished fourth in the Homeserve Dee Stakes at Chester in his last outing.

Day Three concludes with the Britannia Stakes for 3-year-old males at one mile on the straight and the King George V Stakes for 3-year-olds at 1 1/2 miles. BH

GUN RUNNER’S LATEST SPEED FIGUREBy Claire Novakt @BH_CNovak

When Gun Runner closed the door on his sophomore campaign with a clear

victory over elders in the 2016 Clark Handi-cap Presented by Norton Healthcare (G1) at Churchill Downs, the racing world knew it was only a matter of time and luck before he returned better than ever.

In 2017 the 4-year-old son of Candy Ride did just that, and his Equibase Speed Figures show his improvement, his three starts so far are the best of his career. While his lowest of the trio, the 122 ESF Gun Runner earned winning the June 17 Stephen Foster Handicap Presented by GE Appliances was his second-fastest from 14 starts on stateside soil, and by far and away the highest of the week, easily outrunning second-best Kasaqui's 114 earned in the Wise Dan Stakes (G2T).

Gun Runner, who took the 1 1/8-mile Stephen Foster by a record seven lengths while geared down by jockey Florent Geroux, finished in 1:47.56.

"There's not more I can say then this horse is simply the real deal," trainer Steve Asmussen said the morning after Gun Runner's latest win.

Gun Runner's top speed figure of the year was the 130 Timeform rating he earned in the March 35 Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (G1), when he ran second to champion Arrogate by 2 1/4 lengths after showing the way. In his first start of the season, the Feb. 20 Razorback Handicap (G3) at Oaklawn Park, he earned a 125 ESF. BH

CANTER PA PROMOTES RIDER EDUCATION THROUGH SCHOLARSHIPBy Erin Sheat @BH_EShea

The Pennsylvania chapter of the Communi-cation Alliance to Network Thoroughbred

Ex-Racehorses (CANTER) recently awarded $500 scholarships to three off-track Thorough-bred owners in the Mid-Atlantic region to further promote their riding and training education.

The awarded funds for the Becky Julian Scholarship are to be used for training purposes, including riding lessons, clinics, camps, or other equine-related seminars. CANTER Pennsylvania received more than 50 applicants, but eventually chose three recipients: Lottie Crawford and Get It in Ink (Invisible Ink); Susan McRae and Mo's Secret Heart (Mo Mon); and Amy Parsons and Karen's Valentine (Zizou).

For the 501(c)(3) organization, the scholarship's purpose is twofold—to help both horses and humans.

"When we look at aftercare, we want to make sure horses are going to quality, knowledgeable

homes," said Sue Smith, executive director of CANTER Pennsylvania. "It's important that people either have the assistance or the experience to make the transition from a racehorse to a sporthorse. Our way of promoting education is to hopefully develop a market of riders that would be great ambassadors for taking these horses off the track and doing great things with them.

"Another thing we feel strongly about is that it's important for a horse to have value," she added. "Education is probably the easiest way to add value to your horse, and hopefully that will protect them long term—if the horse has a skill, then somebody is going to want him.

"Those were our two focuses: to have a knowledgeable base to take these horses off the track and hopefully that (training) will provide these horses with a great life."

Smith said narrowing the list down to just three recipients was a difficult process, but she was thrilled with the pool of talented applicants.

"The applicants—not just these three—were very impressive. It was a difficult challenge," she said. "These three are exceptional, but there was a whole group of riders that we wish we could have awarded."

Recipient Susan McRae, an eventer from the Upper Bucks County area in Pennsylvania, feels honored to be named and plans on using the funds to boost her

"I don't even remember when I got my first Thoroughbred, but they've always intrigued me as athletes," McRae added. "I've followed horse racing my whole life. I've been to many of the big race days and I just love them to death."

In addition to financial help with training costs, McRae sees being a recipient as the chance to be an ambassador for the breed.

"When I read the email they sent out about the various applicants that they had, I was surprised that I was selected because it sounded like they had such a great group of people," she said. "I consider myself an ambassador for the Thoroughbreds anyway, even without this, because I've had so much good luck with them." BH

dressage training aboard her 10-year-old gelding, who now shows under the name Impromptu.

"This scholarship in particular is a really nice way of supporting the people who are doing the retraining who may not have a big budget," McRae said.

"I thought (the scholarship) was a good opportunity to enhance my ability to train the current Thoroughbred I have. Training is so expensive these days, so anything you can get to help that is appreciated," she said, adding that while her mount doesn't have a lot of eventing experience, she sees a lot of potential as he's very athletic, like most of the Thoroughbreds she's worked with.

PEDIGREE ANALYSISwith Alan Porter

PEDIGREE NOTES ON SENGA, BLAME'S FIRST TOP-LEVEL WINNERBy Alan Portert @pedigreeconsult

June 18 Prix de Diane Longines (G1) winner Senga was well-beaten as favorite in the Abu

Dhabi Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (G1), but showed improved form Sunday, racing beyond a mile for the first time in her career. Senga is from the third crop sired by champion older horse Blame, and is his first group or grade 1 winner, although he has also been represented by grade 2 scorer March, and grade 3 scorers Onus and Far From Over, as well as seven other black-type winners.

Blame hasn't had a lot of representation in Europe yet, but his sire Arch is well-known in that part of the world, having sired several group winners there, including the Darley July Cup (G1) hero Les Arcs, the champion older male in England; and Pomology, champion older mare in England. The sire line is also a familiar one for Europeans as Arch's grandsire, Roberto, captured the 1972 renewal of the Epsom Derby (G1).

Senga's direct female line also goes back to a mare by an Epsom Derby winner, her seventh dam being none other than Almahmoud, a daughter of Mahmoud, successful in the 1936 renewal. Senga's fourth dam, Coup de Folie, winner of the Prix d'Aumale (G3), not only goes back to Almahmoud in the direct female line—her dam is Northern Dancer's half-sister Raise the Standard—but is by Almahmoud's grandson, Halo, giving Almahmoud 3x3.

As smart as she was as a runner, Coup de Folie was an even better broodmare, with five of her offspring winning stakes, including the Mr. Prospector siblings Coup de Genie—Senga's third dam—and Machiavellian, champion European

2-year-old and a leading sire, most notably of Street Cry. Like Machiavellian, Coup de Genie was a champion at 2, when her victories included the Prix de la Salamandre (G1) and Prix Morny Agence Francaise (G1).

Senga's graddam is Coup de Genie's Storm Cat daughter Denebola. Denebola, like her dam, was the best of her sex in France as a juvenile. She has yet to produce a black-type winner, although her current 3-year-old, the Excelebration colt Ratiocination, is stakes-placed. Senga's dam, Beta Leo, was a winner over 5 1/2 furlongs at 2 in France. A daughter of A.P. Indy, Beta Leo is closely related to graded stakes winner Snake Mountain, and to Glia, a French listed winner and U.S. graded stakes-placed performer who is also granddam of grade 1 winner Emollient. Senga is Beta Leo's second foal, the first being the War Front colt Bolting, a listed winner in France last year.

A.P. Indy has turned out to be a very good influence for Blame. He has Senga, Far From Over, and grade 1-placed Chide from only nine starters out of A.P. Indy mares, and stakes winner No Fault of Mine out of a mare by A.P. Indy's son Flatter. A.P. Indy also shows up as the sire of the second dam of Blame's graded winner Onus, who is out of a mare by a son of Storm Cat, and so bred on a reverse cross to Beta Leo. BH
